The Road to WrestleMania has been getting muddled over the past decade. The Royal Rumble is the PLE and match that has been associated with \u2018Mania since 1993, but the Elimination Chamber has been wedging its way into the mix. Winners of both matches are promised a World Championship match at the Show of Shows, but the question that is nagging at many is whether or not the WWE Elimination Chamber should be part of WrestleMania\u2019s build.<\/p>\n
There are so many moving parts in WWE\u2019s first months of the year that the Elimination Chambers’ importance could be lost on some. It has spent years as the last stop before WrestleMania, but the time might be nearing for the Elimination Chamber to disappear. Below, we will look at some of the strongest arguments for this.<\/p>\n
Gimmick PLEs are Being Phased Out\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n
Gimmick PLEs have been a trope that WWE has experimented with for several years. Just about every gimmick match imaginable has had its own PLE, and very few of them have stuck around. We have seen Fatal Four-Way, TLC, and Hell in a Cell themed PLEs, and frankly, they haven\u2019t been very popular with the WWE Universe.<\/p>\n
Mainly because it takes away from the importance of these gimmicks, as WWE shoehorns programs into gimmicks that they don\u2019t fit into. Angles are created for the purpose of filling up these gimmick matches, and quality has dipped significantly.<\/p>\n
The Elimination Chamber is becoming that type of PLE. As a stop on the road to WrestleMania, it\u2019s a gimmick PLE that trusts wrestlers in a match that makes no sense for them. Yes, it\u2019s something that WWE uses to determine a number one contender, but there are other avenues through which this result can be accomplished.<\/p>\n
It has begun to dilute the importance of the Elimination Chamber, and WWE would be smart to remove it from the road to WrestleMania entirely. A few years away could be a nice refresher for WWE’s gimmick match.<\/p>\n
Takes Away From The Importance Of The Royal Rumble <\/strong><\/h2>\n
The Royal Rumble has been the starting point for WrestleMania for over three decades. Its place on the WWE schedule has never wavered, and it has become the launching point for\u00a0 WWE\u2019s version of sweeps.<\/p>\n
The main focus of the PLE is the titular match that determines who will be wrestling in the main event of WrestleMania for a World Championship. A huge honour for any wrestler who is lucky enough to outlast the field, but an honour that the Elimination Chamber also downplays.<\/p>\n
The Royal Rumble represented the only chance that a wrestler had to make it to the World Championship match at WrestleMania. The drama that unfolded in the match was incredible, and the desperation of each participant was felt all over the world. This was their only shot, and seeing those dreams crumble is what storytelling is all about.<\/p>\n
That was until the Elimination Chamber became another road for a wrestler to take. Having two chances to make it to a World Championship match takes away from the importance of the Royal Rumble. It\u2019s no longer the only chance wrestlers have to punch their ticket. The drama surrounding the match is lessened.<\/p>\n
Moving the Elimination Chamber To SummerSlam Would Be A Great Option<\/strong><\/h2>\n
An interesting angle for WWE to take with the Elimination Chamber PLE would be to have it as the Royal Rumble of the Summer. There will be zero chance that WWE will scrap the PLE entirely, and moving it to the summer months could be a great refresh.<\/p>\n
There is plenty of time between the Rumble and the Chamber. Eliminating the muddled mess that takes place at the beginning of the year. Spacing huge gimmick matches, such as these, apart would avoid overstimulation for the WWE Universe.<\/p>\nPhoto Credit: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
If WWE is dead set on using the Chamber match to determine number one contenders, then use it as a building block for SummerSlam. WWE has always considered SummerSlam to be the second biggest PLE on their schedule. They have even gone so far as to move it to two nights in the same manner as WrestleMania. It would be great to use the Elimination Chamber to start the build for SummerSlam and add more pomp and circumstance to the Biggest Party of the Summer.<\/p>\n
The Logistical Considerations <\/strong><\/h2>\n
Moving away from the storyline reasons for the Elimination Chambers potential changes, there are some massive logistical implications to consider.<\/p>\n
At its base level, the Elimination Chamber is a massive structure. WWE loves to pull out the numbers every time the gimmick rears its head, but they are important to look at. The entire structure weighs an astonishing 10 tons, requiring a 50-foot flatbed for transportation to events. The cost of moving the structure alone would cause management to reconsider its use.<\/p>\n
With its massive size, which arena can house the Elimination Chamber? WWE has been moving to stadiums for its major shows, which raises the issue of how to suspend the structure and the visual blocking that comes with it. Ten tons is a lot to suspend from a ceiling, and how many places can handle that type of weight, or would want to?<\/p>\n
It could limit WWE\u2019s ability to hold shows across the United States, which could have them reconsider the Elimination Chamber PLE altogether.<\/p>\n
