Before WrestleMania, there is the WWE Elimination Chamber PLE. Usually, the Elimination Chamber has a themed match for both the men and women.

The winners of those matches will receive a championship match at WrestleMania. Usually, these matches close out the shows, but there were times when singles matches headlined the events. On six different occasions, the main event revolved either around a championship bout or a grudge match in which titles weren’t involved. Here are the ranked singles matches that closed out the Elimination Chamber PLEs.

#6: Drew McIntyre vs. The Miz – WWE Championship (Elimination Chamber 2021)

When Drew McIntyre was WWE Champion at the start of 2021, he had a rough road to WrestleMania, where he was put to the test as champion. At the Royal Rumble, McIntyre had to overcome Goldberg to retain his title.

Then, he had to defend his championship in the destructive Elimination Chamber Match. McIntyre was against all former WWE Champions, including Randy Orton, AJ Styles, Sheamus, Jeff Hardy, and Kofi Kingston. Being the resilient wrestler McIntyre is, he prevailed by last eliminating Styles to retain his gold.

Unfortunately for McIntyre, his night wasn’t over just yet. He unexpectedly got attacked by Bobby Lashley, who was already in a bad mood after losing his WWE United States Championship earlier in the show.

This attack led The Miz to rush to the ring to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase. Miz capitalized on a vulnerable McIntyre to become WWE Champion once again. Although this was an impromptu Money in the Bank cash-in, it’s still a match nonetheless.

#5: John Cena vs. Kane – Ambulance Match (Elimination Chamber 2012)

In late 2011, John Cena began preparing more for his match with The Rock at WrestleMania 28. During his preparation, he got stuck in an unusual predicament. Standing in his way was “The Big Red Monster”, Kane. Earlier in the year, Kane was feeling less of a monster and more of a human being.

When Kane returned, the WWE Universe expected him to get revenge on the man who put him on the shelf, Mark Henry. Rather, Kane targeted Cena. Kane intended to help Cena embrace the hate he receives from the fans. Kane believed that if Cena were to turn his back on the WWE Universe, he would have a huge chance in defeating The Rock.

With the “Never Give Up” attitude Cena has, he refused to follow Kane’s advice, which built more friction between the two. Every week, Kane did everything he could to get Cena to embrace this certain hate. Whether it was attacking Cena’s friend Zack Ryder or playing mind games on Cena, things still weren’t going according to Kane’s plans. The rivalry culminated in an Ambulance Match.

In this match, fans didn’t seem thrilled at the time since it was obvious that Cena was building momentum before facing The Rock at WrestleMania. With the predictable outcome, there was a decent brawl between Cena and Kane. The spot of the match was Cena hitting the “Attitude Adjustment” on Kane through the top of the ambulance truck. Cena secured the win, thus ending what fans considered a “filler” rivalry.

#4: Rhea Ripley vs. Nia Jax – Women’s World Championship (Elimination Chamber 2024)

When Rhea Ripley first won the Women’s World Championship, she was having a triumphant run. Ripley was defeating every challenger that came her way on RAW. When she finally had a challenger in Raquel Rodriguez, it looked like Ripley was finally getting dethroned. In September 2023, Ripley and Raquel went at it in the main event of RAW for Ripley’s gold. The moment Rodriguez was securing the title win, Nia Jax got involved. Jax returned to WWE for the first time in two years by helping Ripley retain her championship.

What seemed to be a form of alliance between Ripley and Jax was instead a swerve, where Jax beat Ripley down to make a statement. Jax made it clear that she was the Women’s World Title. The match eventually took place five months later at Elimination Chamber. This was Ripley’s homecoming, as she was closing the show in her home country of Australia. It was more of a story between a hometown hero and an irresistible force.

With Ripley’s home crowd by her side, she knew that she could definitely beat an unstoppable force such as Jax. This match saw Jax’s improved wrestling performance come into play. Ripley was finally able to hit a “Riptide” on Jax to pick up the win. The victory solidified Ripley as a more credible champion on her way to defending her belt against Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 40.

#3: The Rock vs. CM Punk – WWE Championship (Elimination Chamber 2013)

At Royal Rumble 2013, The Rock made history once again by defeating CM Punk to win the WWE Championship for the seventh time. CM Punk felt cheated out of the match as Mr. McMahon restarted the bout due to The Shield’s interference. Feeling unjustly treated, Punk wanted his rematch with The Rock under his rules. If Rock were to get counted out or disqualified, Punk wins the WWE title.

Some fans argue that this match was great on one side and not up to par on the other. The fans who enjoyed the match were likely big fans of The Rock or CM Punk. On the other side of the coin, there was a discrepancy in the finish of the match. The bout concluded with The Rock retaining in a shananigan matter.

Punk tried to wack Rock with the belt after the referee was knocked down, but it didn’t go in his favor. Instead, Rock dodged Punk, and Paul Heyman was hit with the title. This led to Rock gaining the advantage on a distracted Punk by hitting the “Rock Bottom” to obtain the win.

#2: Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose – WWE World Heavyweight Championship (Elimination Chamber 2015)

If there was a year in WWE that belonged to Seth Rollins, it had to be 2015. It was the year when Rollins finally reached the mountain top by becoming WWE World Heavyweight Champion. When Rollins defended the title in his first regular one-on-one match with Dean Ambrose, fans knew they were in for a treat. Both men have great wrestling chemistry with each other, so it definitely had the fans on their feet.

In this bout, it looked as if Rollins’ reign was coming to an end. During the match, the referee took a bump, leading to chaos. With Ambrose fighting off Corporate Kane and J&J Security, Ambrose seemed to be on his way to winning his first World title. The moment Ambrose hit “Dirty Deeds” on Rollins, a new referee came to count the pin.

Fans were thrilled as they believed Ambrose won the title. Unfortunately, the original referee regained consciousness and disqualified Rollins, thus reversing the decision. The result saw Ambrose winning via disqualification and Rollins retaining the championship.

#1: Roman Reigns vs. Sami Zayn – Undisputed WWE Universal Championship (Elimination Chamber 2023)

During the road to WrestleMania 39, there was so much drama in the infamous Bloodline storyline. At the Royal Rumble event prior, Sami Zayn was fed up with Roman Reigns’ emotional, physical abuse, and manipulation, which led to a match between the two.

Reigns and Zayn’s differences brought so much friction within every Bloodline member. Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa destroyed Zayn at the Royal Rumble without hesitation. Jey Uso, who had a strong hatred towards Zayn, had a change of heart for him when Zayn chose to align with The Bloodline over his best friend, Kevin Owens. Jey was devastated when Zayn struck Reigns, as he felt his trust was broken.

The match between Reigns and Zayn was the main attraction at the 2023 Elimination Chamber, as it was located in Zayn’s hometown of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. With the fans heavily invested in their hometown hero against WWE’s biggest draw of a champion in years, anything could happen.

With The Bloodline being a strong group, Jimmy Uso got himself involved by trying to cost Zayn, but he failed to do so. When Jey Uso entered the ring, fans were on their feet, not knowing who Jey would align with. Reigns continued his manipulation towards Jey until Zayn was aiming for a spear at Reigns, only to miss and hit Jey instead.

Reigns took the chance to strike a distracted Zayn with a spear to remain champion. Sadly for Zayn, the beatdown on him continued. This led to Kevin Owens coming out to fight off Reigns, Paul Heyman, and Jimmy Uso. Owens then walked off, leaving Zayn standing over everyone in the ring.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling<amp-fx-flying-carpet height="600px"><amp-ad data-block-on-consent="" width="300" height="600" layout="fixed" type="doubleclick" data-slot="/15188745,22512265771/FS-lastwordonsports-AMP/AMP-FlyingCarpet" data-lazy-fetch="true" data-loading-strategy="1.25" rtc-config="{ "vendors": { "t13": { "TAG_ID": "f502adbd-5c9b-4d6f-9ec5-b0cdc0f4827c", "ACCOUNT_ID": "9a3c6c23-453a-4cba-b419-30b908f39a50" }, "aps": { "PUB_ID": "600", "PUB_UUID": "16268e26-dabe-4bf4-a28f-b8f4ee192ed3", "PARAMS": { "amp": "1" } }, "criteo": { "NETWORK_ID": "4905", "ZONE_ID": "1382491", "PUBLISHER_SUB_ID": "FS-lastwordonsports-AMP-FlyingCarpet" }, "medianet": { "CID": "8CU8ZT2C4" } } }"></amp-ad></amp-fx-flying-carpet>

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on WWE Elimination Chamber and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
