A wrestling organization can do everything right, but if the champions aren’t credible, then the whole thing can come crashing down. They are the standard bearers for everything that the company wants to promote. These champions are the focal point of everything great with a company.

During the Golden Era, WWE hit so many high notes with its champions. For a decade, they produced some of the greatest champions not just in an era, but in wrestling history. These wrestlers set the tone for everything great about the Golden Era. They inspired a whole generation of wrestlers who followed in their footsteps. Anyone fondly remembers these champions of a certain age, and below, they are honoured in a list of the Golden Era’s greatest champions.

Hulk Hogan

When talking about the greatest champions from the WWE Golden Era, the man who reaches the top of the list is none other than The Immortal Hulk Hogan. He was WWE’s figurehead during the Golden Era, and his name was synonymous with the WWE Championship. There were no mid-card titles for this man; it was either the main strap or nothing.

Starting in 1984, Hulk Hogan won his first WWE Championship and was in the title picture for the duration of the Golden Era. Winning the WWE Championship 3 times throughout the Golden Era, holding it for over 2,000 days. That’s a ridiculous amount of time split between 3 reigns and a length that not many wrestlers could boast.

Hulk Hogan was the WWE Champion during the Golden Era. He was the champion against whom all other wrestlers were measured. He was constantly chased, and those who wrestled the title away from him were instant stars. That was the weight he carried as the WWE Champion.

Bret Hart

Before becoming the leader of the New Generation, Bret Hart proved his worth in the mid-card and tag team divisions. The Golden Era was not just about the main event, as they have a very strong undercard that was just as popular. Bret Hart was one of these talents, and he became the belt collector during his time.

The Excellence of Execution broke in as part of the legendary Hart Foundation. A team that went on to win the WWE Tag Team Championships twice, reigning for a combined 483 days. An impressive reign that should be considered even greater, considering the depth of the division.

When Bret Hart wasn’t winning tag titles, he was breaking into the singles market, winning the Intercontinental Championship in a classic with Mr. Perfect. It was an impressive run for Hart, showing the world that when he was involved in a championship, greatness ensued.

Randy Savage

Randy Savage was an icon of the Golden Era. His flamboyant appearance and entrance were a perfect fit for the era, and he matched that with a high-flying style that set him apart from the larger wrestlers of the era. He was a champion through and through, producing some of the most iconic reigns occurring during the Golden Era.

The Macho Man had fantastic reigns as both the Intercontinental Champion and WWE Champion. They lasted a year and contained some amazing matches. Classics against the likes of Ricky Steamboat, Hulk Hogan, and Ric Flair highlight the greatness that occurred when Randy Savage held a championship. He was a perfect vessel for any title that WWE decided to put on him.

Demolition

The Golden Era produced no team that was like Ax and Smash. They were the perfect tandem, containing the look, destructive capabilities, and attitude that made them the mayors of the tag team division. Throughout their tenure, they either held the tag team championship or competed for it. They were the team that became a standard for all others; no one could surpass them.

Demolition had a monopoly over the tag team championship. Their three reigns were impressive in an era when most teams were lucky enough to enjoy a single time as tag team title holders. What is more impressive, though, is that their first reign lasted for a total of 478 days. A record that held for nearly 27 years, an eternity in WWE. It was a testament to the greatness of Demolition and their lasting impact as WWE Tag Team Champions.

Mr. Perfect

Curt Hennig, for lack of a better phrase, was perfect for WWE’s midcard. His arrogance was a great character trait. Even more, he could back up all of his talk inside the ring. No one could work as well as he could, with Perfect routinely showing up just about everyone who stood across from him. He had the rare talent of being able to look strong. At the same time, he was able to make sure his opponent looked like a million bucks. That’s what made him such a valuable champion every time a strap was put around his waist.

As the Intercontinental Champion, Mr. Perfect ensured great matches would take place. In his 404 days as Intercontinental Champ, he had classic matches against any comers. Wrestlers had to up their game when they stepped in the ring against Perfect. That’s exactly what a company wants from its champion. Perfect’s pedigree is unmatched, and he will go down as one of the greatest Intercontinental Champions of all time.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on the WWE Golden Era and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
