But what if there is a missing word in there? What if Styles loses at the Royal Rumble and it is just his WWE career that is over, paving the way for him to include a brief TNA run in his retirement tour? It is likely this match will be extremely close, probably with no shortage of nearfalls, before Styles taps to the Ring General. The result would be devastating. Styles has laid out his plans for 2026. He wants a retirement tour, and he has a list of wrestlers he wants to face. Triple H said as much on an appearance on ESPN, when he noted WWE was simply following Styles’ lead on this one.

Styles was adamant on Friday. He has no intention to lose to Gunther because he still has way too much he wants to do. But saying something and doing it are two entirely different things. Styles may want with all his heart to win, but Gunther is a formidable opponent. Obviously, the match is being booked a certain way, so if Styles does lose, perhaps Shinsuke Nakamura’s tweet-and-delete from earlier in the week really was prophetic. After all, Styles retiring at the Royal Rumble, some 10 years after his WWE debut in that very match, feels quite poetic, even if it does mean leaving a lot on the table.

Styles wants more matches, another title reign, and chances to say goodbye in cities across the world. But there is a real chance those opportunities never come if Gunther gets his way on Saturday.

Returning Where it All Began

However, there is also a chance this is all part of a very complex, yet ultimately meaningful plan. After all, Styles is the first WWE wrestler to get a retirement sendoff who spent more of his career outside of the company than in it. Styles’ career spans over 25 years with notable chapters in New Japan Pro Wrestling, Ring of Honor, the independent circuit, and, of course, TNA, where his career truly took off. Styles wrestled for TNA from 2002 to 2013. He is a six-time X Division Champion, two-time TNA World Heavyweight Champion, two-time Television Champion, and six-time tag team champion. He was also a three-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion, a title that largely fell under the TNA umbrella during his reigns.

It would have been hard to fathom even just three years ago, but now, Styles returning to TNA on his retirement tour isn’t just possible, but it might be likely. In fact, WWE could pull quite the swerve if Styles’ career doesn’t end on Saturday, just his WWE one…

Imagine the shock if Styles made a surprising return to TNA following a loss to Gunther on Saturday. Styles has already appeared on TNA twice in the past year as part of WWE’s partnership with the company, but he’s yet to get what he wants. Styles has made no secret that he wants a final match in his old stomping ground, and this feels like the perfect opportunity. Technically ‘retired,’ there would be nothing preventing Styles from claiming his retirement only impacted his WWE career. Or noting he had every intention to stay true to his word and stay retired until TNA made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. This would allow Styles some time to wrestle, taking on opponents representing his past, such as Jeff Hardy and Frankie Kazarian (both have expressed wanting one more match), and TNA present, such as Mike Santana and Leon Slater.

Now, that would be the surprisingly easy part to pull off. The more difficult would be how to get Styles back in WWE to finish this tour right.

A Final Redemption Story

Earlier this week, WWE filed the trademark for ‘Career Killer,’ seemingly noting that Gunther will, in fact, claim another career on Saturday. Should that happen, WWE will need to get creative because it wouldn’t make sense to just undo Gunther’s victory. Styles would have to earn his way back to WWE, likely by tricking the Ring General into doing something he doesn’t want to do.

WWE did some long-term storytelling when they had Jey Uso shockingly tap out Gunther. Fans chanted, “You tapped out,” to Gunther for months after. Even recently, after Gunther made John Cena tap, fans continued their chant. Gunther has risen above it, but the memory of what happened won’t go away. And it’s that very memory that will haunt Gunther and trick him into doing something he doesn’t want to do. First, though, something he does want.

Gunther seems poised to get an upcoming world title shot. The best way for that to happen is for the winner of the Men’s Royal Rumble to choose to face Drew McIntyre or Sami Zayn, should he pull off the improbable. That leaves CM Punk vulnerable to a challenge from the winner of the Elimination Chamber. It makes sense that after retiring Styles, Gunther would move on to another man whose career he could kill. And in this case, not only would he kill his career, but he’d take his title.

It seems likely Gunther would challenge Punk in some form or declare himself for the Elimination Chamber to earn that opportunity. And that’s where Styles could come into play. After a nice TNA run to close that chapter, Styles could cost Gunther his opportunity at the Chamber. Styles could continue to bait Gunther all the while knowing Gunther can’t do anything about it, as Styles isn’t on the roster anymore. Styles and Punk could work together to ensure Gunther doesn’t get a world title opportunity unless Styles gets a rematch. And in this case, Styles would win, even if it came in an underhanded way to ensure Gunther remained strong. That would allow Styles back into WWE in time for WrestleMania and give him a chance to get some of those final matches on his wishlist, checked off. Styles could still wrestle on one more ‘Mania card, still win one more world title, and go out on his own terms.

As great as the story would be for Styles to retire at the place where his WWE career began, there are too many opportunities left on the table. Somehow, someway, a loss Saturday doesn’t feel like the last we’ll see Styles in a pro wrestling ring.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on AJ Styles, and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
