It’s happened several times at WrestleMania with the likes of The Undertaker and Kane having a rematch, and Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar contesting rematches at SummerSlam.

However, just four times in the history of the Royal Rumble have there been rematches. Some of the rematches were better than the original, and in other instances, they weren’t. There will be a review of the rematches to see which one at the Royal Rumble was better.

4. At Survivor Series 2002, Show ended Lesnar’s unbeaten run to become a two-time WWE Champion; however, all thanks to Paul Heyman, who betrayed Lesnar and sided with Show.

A month later, Lesnar got some revenge by costing Show the WWE Championship in his match with Kurt Angle at Armageddon 2002.

Lesnar and Show locked horns once more at the 2003 Royal Rumble, with the winner going on to compete in the 2003 Royal Rumble match. Nevertheless, Lesnar defeated Show with an F-5. Lesnar went on to win the Rumble in his debut appearance in the titular bout. It was the first rematch to take place in the history of the Royal Rumble.

Before the bell sounded, the Beast Incarnate viciously assaulted the former four-time WWE World Champion with a steel chair. Lesnar made short work of Show by finishing him off with his patented F-5. Unquestionably, their match at the 2003 Royal Rumble was better and more competitive.

3. Bryan’s popularity was at an all-time high, causing the 2014 Royal Rumble match to have a soundtrack of a chorus of boos in the background with his absence from the titular bout.

Six years later, at the 2020 Royal Rumble, Wyatt and Bryan clashed. The rarity of Royal Rumble rematches makes it even more surprising that two occurred on the same show. Becky Lynch defended the WWE (RAW) Women’s Championship against the “Empress of Tomorrow” Asuka.

Asuka aimed to become a double champion as she was one-half of the reigning WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. However, a year prior at the 2019 Royal Rumble, the roles were reversed with Asuka entering as the reigning WWE (SmackDown) Women’s Champion and Lynch as the challenger. Their chemistry made their matches intriguing to watch.

Asuka prevailed, but their two matches at the Rumble were historic as it was the first Rumble in history to have a women’s rematch at the event, and a rematch period to happen in consecutive years. Their match was superb, and Owens took the bragging rights here to retain the Universal Championship.

Fans waited another four years to witness Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens lock horns at the Royal Rumble. This time, the roles were reversed in 2021. The Tribal Chief was the heel, and KO was cast as a babyface. Their Last Man Standing match for Reigns’ Universal Championship.

That wasn’t the only change from their clash in 2017; there was no crowd in attendance because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Reigns was struggling to free himself from the handcuffs, which took him an age to be free. Ultimately, Reigns continued his Universal Championship reign in a hard-fought battle.

Reigns and KO’s collision course for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at the 2023 Royal Rumble must’ve felt like deja vu for Reigns and Owens. Their meeting at the 2017 Royal Rumble was at the Alamodome, and six years later, their third match at the Royal Rumble was held at the same venue. Furthermore, the Tribal Chief still held the Universal Championship from their 2021 meeting, which is a testament to Reigns’ greatness.

Ultimately, Reigns continued his record-breaking Undisputed WWE Universal Championship reign to win the trilogy.
