The company’s infamous contract negotiation strategy relies on short-term agreements, leaving the company vulnerable to shock departures. Naturally, as rumors of failed negotiations spread throughout the industry, it alerts the competition to talent that can be stolen away from the Japanese promotion.

NJPW is actively shifting away from this precarious strategy, but they are still facing retention issues with a number of key talents. Former IWGP Heavyweight Champion EVIL has officially left the company following the expiration of his contract. He is widely expected to join WWE. A Royal Rumble debut remains on the cards for the now former leader of House of Torture.

Sadly for NJPW, the potential loss of talent might not end there. Some established stars’ contracts are set to expire soon, which could leave a gaping hole in the company’s roster. From native performers with longstanding associations to faction leaders with family connections in WWE, we’re looking at five possible departures and where they could land next in the professional wrestling landscape.

SANADA

SANADA’s current scenario is one of major intrigue. Cold Skull shocked wrestling fans when he announced a period of indefinite leave at the beginning of the year. The reason remains unknown, but again, it falls into the remit of the January renegotiation period.

The House of Torture member has been a prominent star in NJPW, capturing 12 titles during his decade-long stint in the promotion. This included a world title and New Japan Cup double in 2023. SANADA’s cold demeanor and in-ring athleticism mark him out as one of NJPW’s top athletes. Significant injuries have slowed his momentum since his 2023 peak. Losing that yard of in-ring pace could jeopardize a move to the US.

Interestingly, SANADA is well known for his close working relationship with the reportedly WWE-bound EVIL. Teaming up in both the L.I.J. and House of Torture stables, they have captured five tag team championships together. WWE could be the destination for Sanada if he returns, with a reunion with EVIL an exciting possibility. However, AEW’s fondness for Japanese Strong Style, as well as its partnership with NJPW, could tempt him to sign with Tony Khan’s promotion. But for now, he remains signed to the Japanese company.

Drilla Moloney

Moloney has more than proved himself a valuable asset as part of the War Dogs. The English star has looked impressive in the tag team division, scoring two tag team title reigns alongside stablemate Clark Connors.

Moloney is slowly starting to figure in singles competition more, having enjoyed significant bouts with Shingo Takagi and Tomohiro Ishii during 2025. However, should he leave NJPW upon the expiry of his current contract, odds are he would be signed as part of a tag team alongside Connors.

Moloney already has WWE and AEW experience under his belt. His confident promo work and aggressive in-ring style would make him a great fit in either company. And at just 28, Drilla Moloney is a talent with experience beyond his years and a very high ceiling.

UP NEXT!
Yota Tsuji, David Finlay, Shingo Takagi & Drilla Moloney
vs
United Empire (Jake Lee, Callum Newman, Great-O-Khan & HENARE)

A rejuvenated United Empire takes aim at the top!

Watch live on @njpwworld! #njpw #njdash pic.twitter.com/erDauomZ2V

— NJPW Global (@njpwglobal) January 5, 2026

Hiromu Takahashi

The unhinged, explosive Hiromu Takahashi is one of the most distinct personalities on NJPW’s roster. One can’t help but think that Takahashi was born in the wrong era. His hunger for chaos and disregard for safety would certainly make him a terrific fit in ECW.

The L.I.J./Bullet Club merger under the Unbound umbrella certainly seems like a move to retain the likes of Takahashi. But at 36, he is at a crucial crossroads in his career. The Ticking Time Bomb of NJPW has won countless titles in the promotion, but if he is tempted by a move to the US, the window may be beginning to close. Takahashi is another wrestler whose contract is rumored to be expiring, and this may be his best chance to make an impact internationally.

Again, WWE and AEW present viable options. AEW continues to push bold, bloody in-ring violence. However, WWE may offer a better platform for Takahashi’s impressive character work.

Gabe Kidd

The chaotic Gabe Kidd is never one to shy away from the grit of his British wrestling lineage. As an intense, unapologetic heel, Kidd excels in NJPW, as so many British wrestlers have done before him.

A key member of the War Dogs, Kidd is becoming more and more confident as a singles competitor. Acclaimed feuds with Kenny Omega, Zack Sabre Jr., and Eddie Kingston are proof that Kidd can kick it with any wrestling archetype. As a tough-as-old-boots brawler, Kidd has endeared himself to Japanese fans through his seamless transition into Strong Style.

At just 28, Kidd presents an older head on young shoulders. And his age makes him an attractive prospect to big promotions looking develop the next generation of major stars. Kidd’s contract is reportedly set to expire soon, and this news is generating a lot of heat in the US. WWE and AEW remain interested in Kidd, but there is the possibility that he stays put. Dave Meltzer has speculated that Kidd could remain in NJPW, as he is enjoying his current tenure and because they have made him into a star.

Andrade El Idolo is ready for any challenge from Gabe Kidd, while Francesco Akira has challenges to issue of his own!pic.twitter.com/THXWhkhl3e

— NJPW Global (@njpwglobal) January 7, 2026

David Finlay

The name Finlay will be more than familiar to Ruthless Aggression era wrestling fans. Fit Finlay and his jaw-shattering shillelagh occupy a memorable corner of the 2000s wrestling scene. And the Finlay family name has been carried on by a few of the Irishman’s offshoots.

Brogan Finlay, aka Uriah Connors, is currently plying his trade in NXT. But making serious inroads in NJPW is David Finlay. The arrogant War Dogs commander has shown his penchant for leadership, guiding the likes of Kidd and Moloney through the Japanese wrestling landscape.

Finlay is valued immensely by NJPW; as a Bullet Club/War Dogs leader, he has followed in the footsteps of Finn Balor, AJ Styles, Kenny Omega, and Jay White. With his contract expiring soon, Finlay is expected to explore his options away from NJPW. The War Dogs leader would be a welcome addition at any company. However, it looks like family ties may attract him to WWE.

A move to WWE would not only reunite him with his brother but also with his father, too. Fit Finlay continues to work as a trainer at the WWE Performance Center. There’s his War Dogs family to consider as well. If the likes of Kidd, Moloney, and Connors preferred a move to WWE, it’s possible that Finlay would join them. And with AJ Styles possibly set to retire this weekend, it could be one Bullet Club leader out, and another one in.

https://twitter.com/njpwglobal/status/2016028647543435661

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling<amp-ad data-block-on-consent="" width="300" height="600" layout="fixed" data-multi-size="300x250,300x600" data-multi-size-validation="false" type="doubleclick" data-slot="/15188745,22512265771/FS-lastwordonsports-AMP/AMP-2" data-enable-refresh="30" data-lazy-fetch="true" data-loading-strategy="1.25" rtc-config="{ "vendors": { "t13": { "TAG_ID": "4f799893-5665-4629-b0fc-8b97d3569fd6", "ACCOUNT_ID": "9a3c6c23-453a-4cba-b419-30b908f39a50" }, "aps": { "PUB_ID": "600", "PUB_UUID": "16268e26-dabe-4bf4-a28f-b8f4ee192ed3", "PARAMS": { "amp": "1" } }, "criteo": { "NETWORK_ID": "4905", "ZONE_ID": "1382491", "PUBLISHER_SUB_ID": "FS-lastwordonsports-AMP-2" }, "medianet": { "CID": "8CU8ZT2C4" } } }"></amp-ad>

Header photo – NJPW – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on NJPW and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
