The winner of the Royal Rumble punches their ticket to a world championship at WrestleMania. However, someone has to be the bridesmaid by becoming the runner-up in a Royal Rumble match.

For sure, winning a Royal Rumble match sounds a lot better than being a runner-up, but it’s not all doom and gloom for a runner-up. Some runner-ups still manage to get a world championship match at WrestleMania.

RELATED:

5 Royal Rumble Runner-Ups Who Had A Better WrestleMania Than The Winner

Some wrestlers who finished as Royal Rumble runner-ups multiple times managed to win the Royal Rumble in their careers. However, some runner-ups failed to get over the line and should have won the Rumble, but didn’t.

The likes of Kane, Kurt Angle, and CM Punk have all been former world champions, but finished as Royal Rumble runner-ups and never won the titular bout. Nevertheless, let’s take a look at wrestlers from men’s and women’s Royal Rumble matches who came in second place the most.

7. Big Show – 2 (2000, 2004)

Big Show competed in the Royal Rumble match for the first time in 2000. The World’s Largest Athlete entered 26th, and he wasted no time in eliminating several competitors. He eliminated Test, Gangrel, The Godfather, and the 30th entrant, X-Pac.

However, Show and The Rock were the final two battling it out to win the Rumble. Rock’s feet touched the floor, and Show should’ve won, but he didn’t. Rock prevailed, preventing Show from winning the Rumble on his debut Rumble appearance.

Show entered the 2004 Royal Rumble match as the reigning United States Champion. The likes of John Cena, Rob Van Dam, Kurt Angle, and Chris Jericho were thrown over the top rope by Show. However, for the second time, Show came up short as the runner-up, failing to punch his ticket to a world championship match at WrestleMania 20.

6. Charlotte Flair – 2 (2019, 2022)

Charlotte Flair didn’t compete in the inaugural Royal Rumble match in 2018 as she was the reigning WWE (SmackDown) Women’s Champion. However, Flair entered the 2019 edition of the women’s Royal Rumble match. She spent 50 minutes and eliminated five competitors.

Her rival Becky Lynch stole Lana’s spot as the 28th entrant in the women’s Royal Rumble match. Flair most likely would’ve won the Rumble, but the Man eliminated her from the match to win the Rumble.

Surprisingly, the Queen declared her entry in the 2022 women’s Royal Rumble match despite holding the WWE (SmackDown) Women’s Championship. Unfortunately, the 2022 women’s Royal Rumble match is one of the worst in history. However, Ronda Rousey returned as a late entry, eliminating Flair, who failed to win her second Rumble in three years and took the runner-up spot once again.

5. Liv Morgan – 2 (2023, 2024)

Liv Morgan has competed in every women’s Royal Rumble match since its inception in 2018. That’s an impressive feat, but Morgan would like to go one better in her ninth Rumble outing in 2026.

The two-time Women’s World Champion kicked things off as the second entrant in the 2023 women’s Royal Rumble match alongside Rhea Ripley. The duo were the first two in and the final two standing. Morgan gave it her best shot, but Ripley eliminated Morgan to win the Rumble.

12 months later, Morgan entered the 2024 women’s Royal Rumble match as a surprise entrant, entering 30th. She received a huge pop, and despite eliminating the debuting Jade Cargill, she came up short against Bayley, finishing as a runner-up for the second consecutive year. There’s a good omen for Morgan as both Ripley and Bayley went on to win their respective women’s world championship matches at WrestleMania.

4. Shawn Michaels – 2 (1994, 2007)

Shawn Michaels is one of the greatest performers in the history of the Royal Rumble. The ’94 Rumble is unique as it’s the only Rumble to crown co-winners.

Furthermore, HBK was eliminated by Lex Luger, and after Luger and Bret Hart eliminated each other, they were co-winners of the Rumble, with Michaels as the runner-up.

Photo Credit: By Randall Chancellor from Austin, TX – Shawn Michaels on the Ramp, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=50026582

13 years later, after his runner-up finish in ’94, Michaels once again finished as a runner-up in 2007. He’s won the event twice, in 2002 and 2016, with his 2016 win securing a WWE World Championship for the 14th time. However, in the 2000s, Triple H didn’t always feature in Royal Rumble matches as he was focused on defending a world title at the event.

The Game entered the 2008 Royal Rumble match hellbent on main eventing WrestleMania. However, his quest was halted by John Cena, who shocked the world by returning ahead of schedule. He eliminated Triple H to win the Rumble for the first time.

A year later, Triple H feuded with Legacy, and the numbers game proved to be too much. Randy Orton lastly eliminated Triple H to win the 2009 Royal Rumble match. Nevertheless, Triple H still managed to feature in WWE Championship matches at WrestleMania 24 and 25.

2. The first time was in 2005 when he and Batista infamously both went over the top rope, but the match restarted with the Animal winning the Rumble.

Five years later, Cena was eliminated by Edge in the 2010 Royal Rumble match. The 2025 men’s Royal Rumble match was John Cena’s final outing in a Royal Rumble match. The leader of the Cenation was attempting to edge one step closer to a 17th world championship reign.

Ultimately, Jey Uso shockingly eliminated him to win the 2025 men’s Royal Rumble match. Nevertheless, Cena finishing as a runner-up has been a good thing, as he’s gone on to have three WWE Championship matches at WrestleMania and walked out with the WWE Championship on each occasion.

1.
