The boos rained down so much so that even the Rock’s appearance couldn’t save things. The final image of the night, a bloodied Roman Reigns having his hand raised by his cousin, has become synonymous with an era in WWE largely mocked as the “Make Roman look strong” time period. Sure, 10 years later, Reigns would become one of the most beloved WWE superstars in his role as the OTC, but in 2015, he was the guy getting pushed down everyone’s throats, perhaps too much, too soon. Reigns closed at -165 with Daniel Bryan a far second at +170.

2016: It’s Time to Play the Game

Triple H was a +105 favorite on the day of the Rumble; Roman Reigns was 2nd at +225

In 2016, Triple H had been off TV for close to a month when he made a less-than-surprising return in the Men’s Royal Rumble match. It always made sense in the storyline that Triple H, as leader of The Authority, would enter the match given the title was on the line, but WWE left it a secret until the moment he entered at No. 30. The problem was that the betting odds opened and closed with Triple H as a huge favorite to win. Sure enough, after tossing out the then champ, Roman Reigns, and Dean Ambrose, Triple H did just that. Depending on the sportsbook, he closed between +105 and +110, with Reigns the closest behind him (+225 to +285), with the odds gap widening significantly after that.

2017: Return of the Viper

Randy Orton was a -2600 favorite on the day of the Rumble

When the sportsbooks opened for the 2017 Men’s Royal Rumble, Randy Orton was not the favorite. At times the Undertaker was ahead of him as was Goldberg and Braun Strowman. But the day of the Rumble saw a massive, monumental shift. Smart money as they call it, came in, and it was all being put on Orton’s case to win. When that kind of money comes in signaling how things are trending, the books took notice. With so much money down on Orton, he went from a +350 underdog to a -2600 favorite. And for those that don’t know, that was essentially saying his win was all but automatic. The thing with betting in wrestling is you’re betting on storylines not necessarily who is the better wrestler. In this case, the storyline was all leading up to Orton turning on the Wyatt Family and that’s exactly what happened after he won the Rumble and decided to challenge his former faction mate, Bray Wyatt for the world title.

2018: A Japanese Sweep

Shinsuke Nakamura was a -110 favorite on the day of the Rumble; Roman Reigns was 2nd at +225
Asuka was a +137 favorite on the day of the Rumble; Ronda Rousey was 2nd at +150

2018 brought the debut of the inaugural Women’s Royal Rumble, a match that offered a lot of intrigue as to who WWE would give the historic honor of being the first winner to. Many names circulated, but when the odds came out, it was the unofficially signed Ronda Rousey at the top. Closely behind was the undefeated Asuka. And much like the year prior with Orton, when the morning of the match arrived, Asuka had leaped Rousey, only this time, by the shortest of margins.

On the men’s side, Roman Reigns hovered around the top of the odds until he finally found himself sitting in first place less than a week before the event. Yet by the time January 28 rolled around, Nakamura had surpassed Reigns, doing so a few days prior. And while WWE offered a swerve, leading fans to believe Reigns would win another rumble after doing so in 2015, they didn’t pull the trigger. For what may be the only time it happens, two Japanese wrestlers took home the honors.

2019 to 2021 – Era of the Underdog, Non-Favorites go 4-for-6

While Seth Rollins added to a run of the Royal Rumble betting odds being six-in-a-row for the men in 2019, he would be the only man to win as a favorite for the next three years. Rollins opened as the favorite and closed as a huge favorite (he was at -175 to Braun Strowman’s +300 as the match closed in). Rollins entered 10th, lasted 43 minutes, and secured three eliminations including the most important one, the last one.

In the women’s rumble, much like Rollins, Charlotte Flair held the odds from start to finish. She had a nice gap over Becky Lynch in second (-200 to +150). However, when Flair entered at 13th, there was question on if she could still accomplish the feat. Flair battled til the end, lasting over 50 minutes and recording five eliminations. She couldn’t get the final one however as that belonged to her former friend-turned-rival, Lynch, who entered at 28 and won the whole thing. The two might not have been dating at the time but it’s a great story they’ll tell their daughter one day, of the year both mom and dad won the Royal Rumble.

2020: Year of the Underdog

Drew McIntyre was a +450 underdog on the day of the Rumble; Roman Reigns was the favorite at -350
Charlotte Flair was a +200 underdog on the day of the Rumble; Shayna Baszler was the favorite at -500

2020 turned into the year of Drew McIntyre as he largely held the company down during the Covid/Thunderdome era. The Royal Rumble was WWE’s third to last PPV before they began shows without live crowds and in more ways than one, it was memorable. 2020 marks the only time in the last decade that neither odds-on favorite won the rumble match. On the day of the rumble, McIntyre had the third best odds behind Brock Lesnar and the overwhelming favorite, Roman Reigns. Lesnar entered at one, McIntyre at 16, and Reigns at 26. McIntyre recorded six eliminations including both Reigns and Lesnar.

On the women’s side, Shayna Baszler closed at -500 to Charlotte Flair’s +200 but Flair wasn’t to be denied a year after losing the match to Lynch as a favorite. Nine years later, Edge was back as a surprise entrant in the battle royal. He didn’t win but his showing was strong. The following year, Edge announced he’d be back in the Rumble with eyes on the prize. Though when the match began, Edge’s number was drawn first, seemingly pointing to the odds being correct, that with the 2nd best on the day of (and as low as fourth just a few days prior), he wouldn’t win. Much like in his career return however, Edge defied the odds. He last nearly an hour and eliminated three wrestlers, including his former tag team partner turned rival, Randy Orton.

Meanwhile on the women’s side, Bianca Belair was a bookend favorite, opening in early January with top odds and closing on the day of the Rumble with the same. And her odds didn’t really change in terms of the gap from first to second, only shortening a tad. 2021 was Belair’s year in more ways than one and her ascendance to becoming a top name in the women’s division began when she was victorious in this match.

2022 to 2025 – Royal Rumble Odds Rebound as Favorites Win 6-of-8

After a period of success for the underdogs, the Royal Rumble odds favorites roared back over the last four years, winning six of the eight matches.

2022: The F in UFC stands for Favorite

Brock Lesnar was a +250 favorite on the day of the Rumble; Big E was 2nd at +350
Ronda Rousey was a -150 favorite on the day of the Rumble; Bianca Belair was 2nd at +400

Brock Lesnar winning the 2022 Men’s Royal Rumble seemed pretty far-fetched given Lesnar was the WWE Champion at the time. However, Lesnar was scheduled for a title defense on the event card so there was always a chance he’d lose and enter the match. Well, the oddsmakers seemed to know this was exactly what was going to happen. Earlier in the night, Lesnar lost his title to Bobby Lashley and then just a little while later, was entrant No. 30. He threw out five people in just over two-and-a-half minutes, last eliminating former Rumble winner, Drew McIntyre.

The women’s match told a bit of a different story. In 2018, Ronda Rousey made her WWE debut and now, four years later, she was back, looking for her first Rumble victory. Rousey opened and closed as a big favorite over 2021’s winner, Bianca Belair. Rousey entered 28th, lasted a little over 10 minutes, and recorded four eliminations, including that of Charlotte Flair, who she later challenged for her title at WrestleMania.

2023: the Rs Have it

Cody Rhodes was a -150 favorite on the day of the Rumble; Sami Zayn was 2nd at +190
Rhea Ripley was a -200 favorite on the day of the Rumble; Becky Lynch was 2nd at +500

There was one prevailing question entering the 2023 Royal Rumble: Would Cody Rhodes fulfill his destiny? Rhodes returned to WWE the year prior doing so at WrestleMania as Seth Rollins’ mystery opponent. However, just a month into his return, Rhodes got injured in a match, causing him to miss eight months. Rhodes returned to WWE in a pre-taped video in early January 2023, announcing he was all healed up and returning to try to win his first-ever Rumble match. It would get him one step closer to the reason he returned to WWE in the first place, winning the world title and dedicating it to his father, who never had the chance to hold the belt. 2023 marked Rhodes’ first Rumble match since 2015 so it was no real surprise that he was the favorite to win it all. And win it all he did. Rhodes entered last, marking the second consecutive year the No. 30 entrant won the match after Brock Lesnar’s victory in 2022.

Rhea Ripley, much like Bianca Belair two years prior, entered the Women’s Royal Rumble showing she had officially arrived. It was Ripley’s fourth Rumble and while she had some close calls in previous years and is second only to Nia Jax in total women eliminated, she had never been able to win. Until 2023. Ripley entered the match as the favorite with all eyes on her. Though when she drew the No. 1 spot, bettors likely held their breaths as Ripley would need to run the gauntlet to claim her first victory. Well, not only did she do exactly that but in the process, put on one of the most dominant Rumble performances, man or woman, of the last decade. Ripley lasted over one hour and eliminated seven women, last taking out rival Liv Morgan.

2024: Back-to-Back and First-Time Winner

Cody Rhodes was a +250 underdog on the day of the Rumble; CM Punk was the favorite at +125
Bayley was a -140 favorite on the day of the Rumble; Becky Lynch was 2nd at +250

WrestleMania 39 provided one of the biggest shocks WWE had delivered in some time. To bring odds into it, Cody Rhodes was favored at -500 to defeat Roman Reigns, whose odds sat at +300. That means to have made $100 on a Rhodes bet, you’d have had to wager $500. Meanwhile those who bet $100 on Reigns, would have stood to won $300. Everyone seemed to think Rhodes was going to win the title and fulfill the destiny he returned to WWE to accomplish. But when the dust settled, Reigns remained victorious and Rhodes was left to wonder, what happened. Not one to give up however, Rhodes fought his way back and when the 2024 Men’s Royal Rumble came along, he was ready for a second chance at glory. Rhodes overcame the odds, entering 15th, and lasting over 43 minutes en route to becoming just the fourth wrestler to win back-to-back Rumbles.

Entering the 2024 Women’s Royal Rumble, Bayley had taken a bit of a backseat to her fellow Damage CTRL members. In fact, Bayley hadn’t won a title in four years at that point. So when the Rumble came around and Bayley was a big favorite, it seemed like the WWE Universe was getting the return of the OG Bayley. The former champion entered the match as a member of Damage CTRL and absolutely did damage. She entered at three and broke the record for the longest time spent in the women’s match at 1:03:03 (it was broken again in 2025 by Roxanne Perez) while eliminating seven people including Liv Morgan, who for the second year was the runner-up. In the lead-up to WrestleMania, Bayley turned face when she was kicked out of Damage CTRL, and later won the women’s title, her first since 2020.

2025: The Royal Rumble Odds Couple – One Winner a Huge Dog, the Other the Anticipated Favorite

Jey Uso was a +1600 underdog on the day of the Rumble; Seth Rollins was the favorite at -200
Charlotte Flair was a -200 favorite on the day of the Rumble; Iyo Sky was 2nd at +200

The 2025 Men’s Royal Rumble was a fascinating one given all of the swirling storylines. Chief among them was John Cena, who had announced this was his final Royal Rumble. Everyone knew Cena was retiring and it seemed all but certain on his way out, he’d win his 17th world championship. And the best way to ensure the opportunity at doing just that was winning the Rumble. At points, Cena was the favorite to win the match, something that only shifted in the days leading up to the match. That’s when Seth Rollins rose to the top of the table. Cena finished as runner-up and Rollins was taken out by Punk before the final four. Punk, Roman Reigns, Drew McIntyre, the Rock, Brock Lesnar, and Bron Breakker all had better odds to win than Jey Uso, the man who eventually dumped Cena over the top to win it all. Uso’s +1600 and ninth best odds is the lowest anyone has won the Rumble in the last decade, and likely beyond. The match lasted over one hour and 20 minutes, making it the longest such in history. Uso was there for 37 of those minutes, totaling three eliminations.

Charlotte Flair missed over two years of action between December 2023 – January 2025. She made her grand return at the Women’s Royal Rumble and the anticipation was that WWE was once again going to elevate the Queen. Sure enough, Flair made history as she has so often in her career. WWE’s all-time winningest women’s champion entered the match at lucky No. 27 and became the fifth person to win from that spot and first woman. She also became the first woman to win multiple Rumbles, doing so in 2020.

What Do the WWE Royal Rumble Odds Suggest in 2026?

The 2026 WWE Royal Rumble is a week away and odds have already shifted from where they first opened earlier in the month.

Bianca Belair and Liv Morgan have been jockeying for the top spot in the Royal Rumble odds that at the time of this writing, belongs to Morgan. Belair has been out of action since April and Morgan has only just returned herself. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see either win but right now, the odds are favoring Morgan to finally win the match after being a two-time runner-up. It’s worth noting Morgan has moved into the tag team scene for the time-being, however, that is where the intrigue lies. Morgan’s best friend and faction mate, Raquel Rodriguez, has been embroiled in a feud with Stephanie Vaquer over the Women’s World Championship. It would be quite the friendship test if Morgan wins the title that Rodriguez has been unsuccessfully chasing for months.

For the men, it’s another year where Roman Reigns is sitting atop the Royal Rumble betting odds. Reigns hasn’t been seen on TV since November but on Friday, his entrance into the Men’s Royal Rumble was announced. Reigns winning the Rumble is always a possibility as he has more top-five finishes than anyone over the last decade. But in storyline, is a Reigns/Punk WrestleMania match-up that juicy given we kind of already got this in the form of last year’s WrestleMania main event? It is if you add Seth Rollins back into the mix, the man who betrayed both Reigns and Punk when he stole Paul Heyman in the match. Could WWE re-run their triple threat, only this time for the title? It’s certainly possible. However, there are some other compelling options. Second in odds is Gunther, third is Bron Breakker, and fourth is Sami Zayn. Gunther would need to do double-duty as he’s already looking to retire AJ Styles earlier in the night. Bron Breakker is theoretically suspended but that should change Monday. And then there’s Sami Zayn, who would also need to do double-duty as he’s got a title match against Drew McIntyre that night. Don’t be surprised if Zayn’s odds overtake Reigns on the day of the event. A Zayn/Punk match is face vs face but it could Zayn his Cody Rhodes moment of finishing his story and finally winning a title. Or it could give his best frenemy a chance to cost him once again…

Credit: WWE

Moral of the story is there are so many storylines that could impact how WWE opts to take the Royal Rumble results and how the odds respond. It’s worth noting for betting purposes, while you can bet now and get better odds, if you wait until the morning of the Rumble, chances are you’ll find a winner. It’s also important to consider that when you are betting on wrestling, you are betting on a pre-determined outcome, one that is known by perhaps a lot or perhaps only a few individuals. Either way, there is existing information that could reveal the winners unlike in other sports. In the past, Vince McMahon was known to make last minute changes and perhaps that was revealed in some of the betting odds shifts we’ve seen. Anything can happen as WWE Unreal has taught us as well.

One thing is relatively certain though, the odds of the WWE Royal Rumble often reveal winners so if you don’t want possible spoilers, maybe avoid the sportsbooks on the morning of January 31.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on the 2026 WWE Royal Rumble, Royal Rumble odds, WWE betting trends, and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
