Nevertheless, the Royal Rumble is one of the most iconic events in WWE history. Women have a rich history at the event, and the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship featured at the first event in 1988. Furthermore, the inaugural Royal Rumble PPV in 1989 featured the WWE Women’s Championship, highlighting the significance of women’s wrestling. However, it hasn’t always been plain sailing for women at the Royal Rumble.

RELATED:

Every WWE Women’s Royal Rumble Match Winner, Ranked

In some years, women were omitted from cards at the Royal Rumble, as Women’s Championship matches didn’t feature. However, Women’s world title bouts have featured consistently in the past decade at the Royal Rumble. There have been some top-quality Women’s world title showdowns at the Rumble, which have had massive implications heading into WrestleMania.

This article will feature the former RAW Women’s Championship, currently known as the WWE Women’s Championship, and the SmackDown Women’s Championship, currently known as the Women’s World Championship. Furthermore, the WWE Divas Championship will also be featured in this piece.

5. Charlotte Flair defended her title against her former best friend, Becky Lynch. However, Flair’s father, and two-time WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair, accompanied her to the ring. Nevertheless, “Naitch” couldn’t keep his nose out of his daughter’s championship bout with the Irish Lass kicker.

Flair and Lynch’s meeting at the Royal Rumble was their first high-profile one-on-one bout on a WWE PPV. As expected, the crowd was heavily backing Lynch to dethrone the Queen. For sure, Flair and Lynch would go on to have better matches. However, in the history of the Royal Rumble’s top women’s world title bouts, it was one of the best. Furthermore, the Nature Boy kissing Lynch was controversial, and Charlotte Flair took advantage to retain the Divas Championship.

4. Charlotte Flair vs. Bayley – Royal Rumble 2017

Bayley was the fourth and final member of the Four Horsewomen to make her main roster debut, and in reality, Bayley was hurt by this. However, the Hugger didn’t look out of place on the main roster, and in her debut Rumble appearance in 2017, she challenged Charlotte Flair for the WWE (RAW) Women’s Championship. The Queen was the top women’s world champion on RAW, and she was looking to walk into WrestleMania 33 as the reigning women’s world champion.

Their match was the curtain-raiser, which is a huge spot to have at the Rumble. However, their chemistry clicked well, and it was the typical heel and underdog babyface matchup. Moreover, Flair continued her remarkable unbeaten streak in championship matches on a WWE PPV by going 16-0 after retaining the title with her patented Natural Selection on the ring apron.

3. Becky Lynch vs. Asuka – Royal Rumble 2020

Becky Lynch and Asuka made history at the 2020 Royal Rumble as they became the first pair of women to have a rematch at the Royal Rumble. This time in their 2020 encounter, Lynch entered as the WWE (RAW) Women’s Champion, and the Empress of Tomorrow was the challenger. Furthermore, Asuka was bidding to become a double Champion, as she was one-half of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions alongside Kairi Sane.

Lynch and Asuka’s clashes are fascinating, and unsurprisingly, they knocked it out of the park in a competitive women’s world championship match. Asuka failed to blind Lynch with the green mist, and the Man continued her championship reign by applying the Dis-Arm-Her, leaving Asuka no choice but to submit.

2. Asuka vs. Becky Lynch – Royal Rumble 2019

As mentioned previously, Asuka and Becky Lynch’s clash at the Royal Rumble over the women’s world championship occurred at back-to-back Rumbles. Their clash at the 2019 Royal Rumble opened up the show. The women had their working boots on at the 2019 Royal Rumble, and Asuka and Lynch’s match didn’t fail to disappoint. However, the Man was desperate to get her hands back on SmackDown’s top prize after losing her title to Asuka in a Triple Threat match at TLC 2018, all thanks to outside interference from Raw’s top women’s world champion, Ronda Rousey.

Lynch was a woman on a mission, and she had that look in her eye where nothing was going to stop her from being a women’s world champion again. However, the Empress of Tomorrow is a fighter, and she forced Lynch to submit to a modified version of the Asuka Lock. They hit a home run in a superb women’s world championship match, and the Man didn’t hide her disappointment afterward.

1. Ronda Rousey vs. Sasha Banks – Royal Rumble 2019

Asuka and Becky Lynch’s Women’s Championship match at the 2019 Royal Rumble wasn’t the only women’s world championship match that was a banger at the event. Ronda Rousey and Sasha Banks’ encounter for the WWE (RAW) Women’s Championship stole the show. Unquestionably, this was one of the best matches in the Baddest Woman on the Planet’s career. The Boss sought her fifth reign as RAW’s top Women’s world champion.

There were some excellent technical exchanges between the duo. Rousey overpowered the Boss in some aspects of the match. However, Banks pushed Rousey to her absolute limit. Banks didn’t make life easy for the reigning champion. Both were motivated to put on a good match that the crowd could get behind. Despite Banks’ efforts, it wasn’t enough to dethrone Rousey for the gold. Rousey retained her title with the Piper’s Pit, and almost a year into her WWE career, it was the first time that Rousey won a match via pinfall. Afterward, both women acknowledged each other’s efforts, and they shook hands.

More from LWOS Pro Wrestling<amp-fx-flying-carpet height="600px"><amp-ad data-block-on-consent="" width="300" height="600" layout="fixed" type="doubleclick" data-slot="/15188745,22512265771/FS-lastwordonsports-AMP/AMP-FlyingCarpet" data-lazy-fetch="true" data-loading-strategy="1.25" rtc-config="{ "vendors": { "t13": { "TAG_ID": "f502adbd-5c9b-4d6f-9ec5-b0cdc0f4827c", "ACCOUNT_ID": "9a3c6c23-453a-4cba-b419-30b908f39a50" }, "aps": { "PUB_ID": "600", "PUB_UUID": "16268e26-dabe-4bf4-a28f-b8f4ee192ed3", "PARAMS": { "amp": "1" } }, "criteo": { "NETWORK_ID": "4905", "ZONE_ID": "1382491", "PUBLISHER_SUB_ID": "FS-lastwordonsports-AMP-FlyingCarpet" }, "medianet": { "CID": "8CU8ZT2C4" } } }"></amp-ad></amp-fx-flying-carpet>

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on WWE Royal Rumble and other stories from around the world of wrestling as they develop.
