Unsurprisingly, competitors have tried to create their own variants. From WCW’s War World 3 to NJPW’s Rambo, few replicate the spirit of the original.

From day one, match one, AEW has rolled the dice with their own staggered entry Battle Royale. AEW’s first official PPV, Double or Nothing 2019, kicked off with the 21-man Casino Battle Royale. Competitors entered the ring at timed intervals in groups of five, based on the four suits in a standard pack of cards. Plus, a last-minute Joker. It was visually clunky. Yet, the idea has evolved.

In April 2024, AEW debuted the first Casino Gauntlet match on Dynamite. With a quick, fluid pace, an emphasis on constant in-ring action/chaos, surprises, and interconnected storytelling, the match ticks all the boxes associated with the best Royal Rumble matches. Ending with a pinfall or submission, no disqualification, and no eliminations, it more than captures the spirit of the Royal Rumble. One could argue it can produce more unpredictability than the Royal Rumble can facilitate.

In fairness, the Royal Rumble is 38 years old, while the Casino Gauntlet is not even two. It’s inevitable with time and reps that the Casino Gauntlet will, like the Royal Rumble, develop its own tropes. Some are already forming. Cliches will develop. We’ve had nine Casino Gauntlet matches in its short lifespan with mixed results. Yet, AEW can learn from the Royal Rumble’s history to avoid stagnation and avoid its predecessor’s limitations.

1) Too much, too long, and too many

Comparatively, the Casino Gauntlet doesn’t inherently have a bloat issue. The Royal Rumble requires 30 participants. Contrastingly, the Casino Gauntlet can have an unpredictable number of entrants. The largest Casino Gauntlet so far had 18, if you include the individuals in the nine-entrant tag team version, although this was one of the least memorable Casino Gauntlets. The lack of elimination poses a problem of how many bodies are too many?

Compare AEW’s All In men’s Casino Gauntlets from London (2024) to Texas (2025). I’m biased because I attended the Wembley version. Still, the latter received ten extra minutes and three more competitors (14 men). Arlington’s gauntlet lacked the breathlessness of Wembley’s.

Plus, there were other issues we’ll discuss later. There was too much time to think rather than feel. The match is at its best with fast pace, continual action, and well-timed random entrances. Spurring minute after minute of dopamine. The women, with 12 participants, suffered a similar issue with its just under 30-minute runtime.

Bigger in Texas, yes, but not quite the sweet spot. For some, AEW’s bug turned feature of overindulgence. AEW can over-rely on in-ring work to compensate for gaps in overt storytelling or connective tissue. Finding a balance/formula is tricky. But the Casino Gauntlet’s less rigid structure and rules allow for experimentation and variation. Too many bodies and too much time risk homogeneity and a sagging pace/rhythm. Like all the areas of development we’re discussing, the problems can interconnect.

2) Keep innovating the thriller, keep out the filler

The Royal Rumble’s set structure means WWE must book dips in the pace and intensity to facilitate its peak highs. Even though the best Casino Gauntlets are total nonstop action, the dips aren’t from slow action. Rather, they are moments of anticipation. Outdoing an important aspect of the Royal Rumble, seeing a new entrant allows fans to fantasy book the next rounds of action. AEW fans expect instant fighting, full-on, and mid-ring. Not strategically going to the corner.

AEW, in philosophy, has created an expectation that means wrestlers and the creative can expose its flaws when it fails to meet its own standards. AEW, unlike the Royal Rumble, can’t rely on entrants for pops or coast on “moments”. The standard is too high. Most fans want that breathlessness. However, eventually, all thrills become desensitized and normalized.

For example, eventually, the wrestlers waiting on the floor for their turn will become a noticeable detraction, as wrestlers in the Royal Rumble go to the corners. Trying/adding extra details will keep the match fresh. Stripping things back, like fewer participants, different sequences with distinct styles of action, will distinguish different gauntlets. Likewise, adding elements, like wrestlers brawling at ringside, would provide newer thrills.

3) Avoid Repeating Signature Spots and Repetition

WWE likes moments. In isolation, these can be cool, unique, and attention-grabbing. Over time, what’s new quickly becomes old hat or a parody of itself. Take the legacy of Kofi Kingston’s near-elimination spots. Once a fun moment becomes a feature, it’s easy to think about the (lack of) logic rather than how it makes you feel. From office chairs to pancakes, the spot becomes staged and obligatory.

AEW is not averse to repetition. Wrestlers once used destroyer piledrivers like they used Superkicks. AEW has many unique high-flyers, risk-takers, and strategists capable of coming up with new ideas to keep the mini-match aspects fresh.

Creatively, Tony Khan should avoid repeating booking patterns for the Casino Gauntlet. If it works, Khan has reused it. Diminishing returns sometimes be damned. Remember the abundance of tournaments in 2023? Chris Jericho, the star-maker, faction leader? The Death Riders were the third set of crusaders to save AEW’s heart and soul. It would help create the next potential issue…

4) Don’t Become Predictable

It’s human nature that can lead us to complacency and familiarity. Sometimes comforting, but predictability in a match anchored in unpredictability breeds inertia. As a signature match in a company whose identity is defined by cutting-edge, evolving wrestling, familiarity breeds contempt. To some extent, predictability is already a factor.

An AEW sin is telegraphing the winner of a tournament. Or announcing a match on Dynamite, Collision, or PPV where the result seems conclusive, a stepping-stone for kayfabe momentum on the way to a bigger contest. It can create a sense of redundancy. Not inherently bad. I love thinking about where things are going, but I want to be fully engaged in the present moment.

The journey can still be fun, but other issues mentioned can intensify predictability. It seemed clear that MJF and Ricochet would win the last two Casino Gauntlet matches. Each match featured a similar number of men. Both went over twenty minutes. A norm has already seemingly formed in terms of the number of participants and time.

The beauty of this match is that, compared to the Royal Rumble, if there’s an upset, it could happen at any moment. It gives AEW the chance to surprise viewers. Have the gauntlet end before half a dozen competitors hit the ring. Subvert expectations. For example, Will Ospreay’s gauntlet win streak, with the Aerial Assassin taking the fall as part of a larger story arc. With the no-DQ element also, plus the potential of outsiders or debuting wrestlers, there are ways to keep fans uncertain.

5) Don’t Make it Annual

The Royal Rumble as an event has a Pavlovian effect. WWE fans are conditioned to become excited for the start of WrestleMania season. I personally don’t want the Casino Gauntlet to replicate or have a similar significance. Besides blatantly copying the Royal Rumble, AEW has landmark events with emerging legacies.

In May/July, we have the Owen Hart Cup Tournament on the road to All In. Then, to close the year, we have the Continental Classic. Sure, there’s room on the calendar. But already, with Casino Gauntlet a staple of All In, conditioning can cut the other way. For example, at All In, the result could either signpost the potential world championship victors or feel like a match to get wrestlers on the card. Inherently, this isn’t a problem if the creative (before, during, and after the match) and action distract us from the strings.

Having the match remain a wild card contest that could appear on TV or PPV makes it unpredictable. When done right, it adds excitement and intrigue as a storytelling and character-building device. For a match inspired by casinos, maintaining that gambling’s uncertain element only adds to the gimmick’s prestige.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – AEW – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on the AEW Casino Gauntlet and other stories from around the world of wrestling as they develop. You can always count on LWOPW to be on top of the major news in the wrestling world.
