Usually, the Royal Rumble Match includes mid-card champions such as the Intercontinental Champion. With that element, there were also times when that wasn&#8217;t the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the Attitude Era started, Vince McMahon treated the Intercontinental Championship as if it were another major title. Throughout this era, the Intercontinental Championship was always defended at the Royal Rumble. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The title brought immense prestige to the company, making stars out of innumerable wrestlers, including Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, and many more. Here is a ranking of every Intercontinental Title Match from the Attitude Era at the Royal Rumble.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>#5: Ken Shamrock vs. Billy Gunn &#8211; Royal Rumble 1999<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Ken Shamrock held the Intercontinental Championship, he was also one-half of the WWE Tag Team Champions and a member of Mr. McMahon&#8217;s Corporation. During that time, he had an onscreen sister, known as Ryan Shamrock. Ryan unintentionally brought problems to Ken due to Billy Gunn pursuing her. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This brought stress upon Ken as not only did he have to worry about Ryan, but also the Intercontinental Title, which Gunn was also chasing. Gunn&#8217;s interest in Ryan led him to have a match with Ken at the Royal Rumble. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The feud escalated a whole lot more when Gunn exposed his rear to Ryan, thus leading to Shamrock brutally assaulting Gunn on RAW before the Royal Rumble.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The match started with Gunn wasting little time entering the ring by running for revenge against Shamrock. There was a whole lot of back and forth between the two men as they were trading finishers. At one point, Gunn hit his finisher, &#8220;The Famouser&#8221; on Shamrock, but it wasn&#8217;t enough to put him down. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another close call was when Val Venis, who also had problems with Shamrock and interests in Ryan, interfered by helping Gunn almost win the Intercontinental Championship. Somehow, Shamrock gained the upper hand by catching Gunn with &#8220;The Ankle Lock, thus making him tap out to retain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>#4: Chris Jericho vs. Chyna vs. Hardcore Holly &#8211; Royal Rumble 2000<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chris Jericho vs. Chyna vs. Hardcore Holly at the Royal Rumble 2000\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7k2BtfqCCF4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there was a time when the Intercontinental Championship was involved in a unique situation, it was around late 1999 through early 2000. The Intercontinental Title was held by both Chris Jericho and Chyna simultaneously. The only way for both Jericho and Chyna to settle this dispute was by having another match against each other. Instead of a singles bout, it became a Triple Threat Match once Hardcore Holly got involved in the picture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the match, all three competitors showed how badly they wanted to become the official Intercontinental Champion. It seemed as if Chyna was closing for a win when she held Holly in &#8220;The Boston Crab&#8221;. Instead, Jericho gained the advantage by knocking Chyna from behind to hit the &#8220;Lionsault&#8221;. Due to Regal betraying WWE to jump ship to The Alliance, he knew asking for rehirement wouldn&#8217;t be an easy task. For Regal to rejoin WWE, Mr. McMahon gave him the condition that he had to kiss his behind. With Regal reluctantly doing so, he became more aggressive in the ring. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regal&#8217;s aggression and momentum led him to challenge Edge for the Intercontinental Championship. At first, Edge gained the upper hand at Vengeance. The second time Regal and Edge went at it, the outcome was a little different.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Royal Rumble, Regal and Edge went at it once again. Regal used his technical wrestling style as an advantage. Regal&#8217;s technical wrestling and Edge&#8217;s grounded\/dive attack moves gelled well together. Edge pulled a comeback in the match, but Regal unfortunately gained the upper hand. Regal cheated by directly knocking out Edge with brass knuckles, a weapon Regal began using when he developed his in-ring dominance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>#2: The Rock vs. Ken Shamrock &#8211; Royal Rumble 1998<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FULL MATCH - The Rock vs. Ken Shamrock - Intercontinental Championship Match: Royal Rumble 1998\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yYMrlknDs2M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before Ken Shamrock became a double champion in WWE, he had a long journey to become the Intercontinental Champion. At first, he was going at it against former champion, The Rock. At the start of 1998, Shamrock had to deal with the entire Nation of Domination before finally facing The Rock.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rock and Shamrock did not fail to deliver when they had their first singles match against each other. Both men had such great chemistry in the ring that everything executed went smoothly. Holding this match at the San Jose Arena also benefited both men. The crowd was behind and engaged the whole contest. Although Shamrock lost via disqualification, the match was still enjoyable for the fans to see.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2><b>#1: Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho &#8211; Royal Rumble 2001<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Chris Benoit defended the Intercontinental Championship against Chris Jericho in a Ladder Match, it was the culmination of their on-and-off feud in 2000. Their Ladder Match is regarded as one of their greatest matches, not only against each other, but in their wrestling careers. There was so much intensity in this match as they were exchanging finishers and submissions. The move exchanges were just getting started.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later in the match, Benoit and Jericho used the ladder in creative ways. The biggest spot of the night was when Jericho locked Benoit in a modified version of the &#8220;Walls of Jericho&#8221; on top of the ladder. At that moment, it was all about racing to get to the top of the ladder while using their aggressive style of wrestling. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, Jericho gained the momentum by knocking Benoit off the ladder.
