Now, the proper gift for a first anniversary is paper, but since we live in an increasingly paperless world, we’ll instead dedicate our digital paper, aka this column, to Monday Night Raw and Netflix’s one-year partnership.

Michael Cole and Corey Graves kicked things off with a very Stranger Things-themed intro after several wrestlers were shown making their arena entrances as the Stranger Things theme played in the background. We aren’t in Hawkins anymore, Graves said in his return to the Raw desk. This was Monday Night Raw. And it’s kicking off with a bang as Rhiyo make their entrance to send us into our first match of the night.

WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship: Kabuki Warriors (C) vs Rhiyo

Asuka and Iyo Sky start things off with Sky clearing Asuka and Kairi Sane from the ring before Rhea Ripley takes them both out on the outside. It’s a quick start for the challengers before we head to commercial break.

Asuka and Ripley are in the ring as we get back from the break. Asuka temporarily has control, but Ripley catches her in the ropes. Both end up on the apron, but Asuka rolls off. Sane pulls her out of the way of a cannonball from Ripley, allowing the Kabukis to take over. Asuka and Sane roll Ripley back into the ring as Sane tags in. She takes out Ripley with a forearm for a nearfall. Asuka and Sane keep up their well-orchestrated double team with Asuka getting another nearfall on Ripley, isolated in the middle. Ripley and Asuka engage in battle in the middle before Asuka drags Ripley back to her corner. Sane is legal, but Ripley fights off and catches her with a fallaway slam. Hot tag into Sky as both Asuka and Sky are legal again. Sky with a sligblade, but Sane is back in to run interference. It doesn’t matter, though, as Sky lands a huge top rope missile dropkick to take out the Kabukis. Sky is looking for the bullet train, but Asuka intercepts. Sky tries again, but Sane wraps her up in the ropes while Asuka distracts the ref. Sane with a huge stomp on Sky, hung up from the ropes. Sane is in charge as we head to another break.

Sane has Sky in an achor submission as we come back from commercial, but Sky counters and manages to make a hot tag to Ripley. Sane can’t do the same, and it’s Ripley vs Sane. Ripley takes out Sane with some huge power moves before kicking Asuka off the apron. Ripley is setting up for her finisher and tags in to Sky, but they can’t hit their maneuver. Sky flies from the top with a missile dropkick, but Sane manages to kick out at the last second. Sky back to the top, but Asuka knocks Ripley into Sky and then hits a codebreaker on Ripley, leading to a nearfall for the champs. Asuka tags in and goes right after Ripley with a sliding knee and quick cover. Asuka catches Ripley in an ankle lock, followed by a German suplex as Sane tags back in. It’s another nearfall on Ripley. Quick tags from the Kabukis as Sane and Asuka double team Ripley and almost have the win before Sky breaks up the pin. Sky takes out Sane with a suplex as Ripley manages to tag in. Asuka gets a quick roll-up attempt and another, but Sky kicks out. Sky gets a counter and stomp before taking out Asuka with the bullet train. She tags in Ripley, who hits the riptide, followed by an over-the-moonsault. Sky tags Sane out, preventing the break-up, and it’s over.

Rhiyo are the new champs!

Punk vs Breakker gets a PLE-style video package to hype up their match, which will be the main event of the night.

Rhiyo are celebrating backstage with Adam Pearce, who is standing in front of some Stranger Things props when Gunther rolls up. Pearce says tonight is a big night. There are a ton of eyes on the show and on him. Everyone saw him beat John Cena, and no one can take that from him. But they’ve also seen how he’s acted after and the disrespect he’s shown. Pearce says Gunther can say whatever he wants out there, but he advises Gunther to mix in a little respect, as it goes a long way. Cameras follow Gunther from the hallway all the way to the ring. Gunther shows off his new shirt, a picture of him making Cena tap out, as it’s announced we’ll hear from the Ring General when we come back from break.

Chapter Two: He Who Remains – Gunther Addresses the WWE Universe

Gunther says through boos that he’s been asked by management to show a little respect. Fans chant ‘you tapped out,’ to which Gunther just laughs because you know who else tapped out, everyone’s hero. Gunther said he deserves respect for making Cena do the one thing he said he’d never do, tap out like a little…out walks AJ Styles, and he’s in a bad mood.

Styles joins Gunther in the ring as the crowd chants his name. Styles starts to talk, but Gunther cuts him off. He says Styles shouldn’t talk to Guntehr about respect. He’s punching above his weight. They both know Gunther is the greatest wrestler in the company right now. Gunther continues to interrupt Styles. He again says he is the man who made Cena tap out like a little you-know-what. Styles goes to speak, but Gunther cuts him off, “like a little bitch.” Gunther asks what ‘little AJ’ is going to do about it before he mocks Cena. Styles smacks him in the face, and the two go head-to-head. They stare each other down as Styles takes the mic and throws it at Gunther.

Pearce is backstage with Ivy Nile, asking for a match for the Women’s Intercontinental Championship. She refuses to get to the back of the line. Gunther shows up and demands to face Styles next week. Styles hits the scene and asks if Gunther is going to take action, or he is going to stand there like a little bitch. Styles says he’ll rip Gunther’s head off, and Pearce makes the match official.

Chapter Three: It’s Not Just Her Saying It – Women’s Intercontinental Championship: Maxxine Dupri (C) vs Becky Lynch

Maxxine Dupri and Becky Lynch lock up, with Lynch getting the early edge and insulting Dupri. Lynch’s gear is inspired by her new Star Trek role. Dupri goes for the ankle lock, but Lynch escapes it. The two lock up again, and Lynch lands a cheap shot to get an edge. Dupri fights back, though, and once again chases Lynch from the ring. Dupri to the apron, but Lynch gets out of the way. Dupri still manages to land a big boot to take Lynch down as we go to commercial.

Back from commercial and Lynch is looking for the disarmher, but Dupri avoids it and gets a nearfall on a roll-up. Both women are down on the mat as fans start chanting “Y2J.’ Dupri and Lynch shove each other in the middle of the ring as Dupri eggs Lynch on and takes her out with a series of clotheslines. Dupri splashes Lynch in the corner before landing the fisherman’s suplex and kip up. Dupri gets another nearfall as Lynch seems stunned. Dupri to the top, but Lynch gets out of the way and catches the boot, but Dupri reverses it and lands the ankle lock. Lynch makes it to the ropes to break the hold. She uses the ropes to lure Lynch in and then climbs to the top herself going for a leg drop but Dupri rolls out of the way. She locks Lynch in a second ankle lock, but Lynch fights off and gets the disarmher in briefly. Back to the ankle lock for Dupri, but Lynch pushes off. Dupri climbs to the top, but Lynch follows her. The two fight to the top, and Lynch hits the superplex, followed by a DDT for a nearfall. Lynch drags Dupri to her feet, looking for the manhandle slam, but she can’t hit it. Dupri misses a boot, and Lynch hits a back suplex for a nearfall. Lynch locks on the ankle lock, but Dupri fights off to send her into the corner. She hits a german suplex and then lands the lateral press from the top, but it’s not enough. Lynch gets to the outside and hangs Dupri in the ropes. Lynch climbs up, and Dupri follows as the two fight on the ringpost. Lynch slips under and goes for the powerbomb, but Dupri rolls out and counters into an ankle lock. Dupri isn’t releasing it. Lynch rolls to the ropes and gets Dupri with her shoulders down. Dupri still has the ankle lock on as the ref counts. And it’s another title change on this Stranger Things Raw.

There’s another vignette hyping up Oba Femi before Bron Breakker is seen with the Vision backstage. Stephanie Vaquer is seen walking through the hallway with the Creed Brothers in the background in a fake ice cream stand boat thingy.

A video previewing WWE Unreal season two hits. The season debuts on January 20.

The Usos, new tag champs, make their way to the ring through the crowd. Jimmy Uso cut off the yeeting, but the crowd chanted to run it back, so of course…that’s what they did. While still in the crowd, Jey Uso introduced the new champs. Jimmy Uso noted this was the first Raw of the new year, and it was with the new champs. Jey thanks AJ Styles and Dragon Lee for a great fight, but that was last week and last year, Jimmy reminds him. Jey says this year is the year of the Usos. It’s a warning shot to every tag team in the game. Jimmy says that in front of them is the best tag team in the game. Anybody who wants some, they’ll be waiting. Jey says four letters, one word, but he doesn’t mean Yeet this time; he means Usos. The two head back through the crowd.

Chapter Four: To Kiss A Devil

Back in the ring, Stephanie Vaquer makes her way out for a word with Jackie Redmond. Vaquer, with a boot on her ankle, was asked about what’s next. Vaquer said 2025 was amazing. She won four titles, debuted on Raw, and competed in Evolution and the Royal Rumble. The most important, though, and her biggest dream was becoming WWE Women’s World Champion. Vaquer thanked the fans for believing in her, alternating between Spanish and English. Vaquer said her injury won’t stop her. She wants more. She wants to take on everyone because she is the luchadora primavera. As Vaquer is celebrating, Raquel Rodriguez ambushes her from behind, targeting the injured ankle. Rodriguez hits the tejana bomb before getting a chair from the timekeeper’s area. She chases the refs from the ring and attacks Vaquer’s ankle. Pearce and backstage agents show up to stop her from further attacking, but it’s clear the damage is done. It looks like Rodriguez just wrote Vaquer off TV and potentially a title vacancy.

After the commercial break, Rodriguez continued to attack Vaquer’s injured ankle backstage, furthering what appears will be a write-off for Vaquer.

Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee are backstage as Mysterio is hyping up his protege. Penta comes onto the scene and says he was happy to have Mysterio’s back last week. He’s tired of what the Vision is doing. He calls Austin Theory a pendejo. Mysterio echoes that sentiment and says only Penta understands the tradition of lucha libre. Everything the Vision wants to destroy, and they will fight to protect. Penta says if Mysterio needs anything, he’s here for him.

Chapter Five: Hellfire Collides – Liv Morgan (w/ Roxanne Perez) vs Lyra Valkyria (w/ Bayley)

Liv Morgan and Lyra Valkyria lock up before the two engage in a quick back-and-forth that Valkyria gets the better of. Morgan takes over, however, stopping Valkyria from flying to the outside. Morgan throws Valkyria into the steel steps as she leans against some more Stranger Things-inspired props on the barricade. We then head to the commercial.

Valkyria and Morgan take each other out as both get encouragement from their corners. Back on their feet, Morgan and Valkyria engage in some yay/boo forearms. Morgan stops Valkyria in her tracks, but Valkyria returns the favor. Morgan gets caught in the ropes as Bayley taunts her. Valkyria hits a suplex and a huge tornado DDT as she keeps her grasp on Morgan. Valkyria with the fisherman buster and bridge for a nearfall, but Morgan kicks out. Valkyria gets Morgan up, but she fights off and counters with a quick roll-up. Valkyria counters with one of her own. Morgan with elbows to Valkyria, but Valkyria still gets Morgan up. She goes for Nightwing, but Morgan manages a great counter mid-move. Morgan, with the momentum she distracts the official, allowing Perez to dump Valkyria. Perez and Bayley end up brawling on the outside before Bayley gets a chair and chases Perez to the back. It’s enough to distract Valkyria as she walks right into Oblivion for a Morgan victory.

Redmond is backstage with CM Punk. She says some people believe it will take one spear, so how is he preparing? Punk says everyone has an opinion. They’d much rather talk about him because people pay attention. Punk says it doesn’t matter because if they are saying that, it means he is the underdog, and people are underestimating him. Tonight, it won’t be 1-2-3 spear but rather Breakker going to sleep.

Chapter Six: The Best vs The Badass – WWE World Heavyweight Championship: CM Punk (C) vs Bron Breakker

Punk and Breakker lock up as Punk manages to take Breakker down briefly. Back on their feet, Punk whips Breakker into the ropes. Breakker tries to power Punk up, but Punk rolls off and utilizes some holds to start working Breakker’s body parts. Breakker finally gets Punk to the ropes and takes over with his power as Raw goes to commercial break.

Breakker is in control, coming back from the break as he shoves Punk into the ringpost. Breakker hangs Punk up on the bottom rope for a nearfall. Punk gets to his feet and fights back, but Breakker’s power is too much as he slams Punk back to the mat before mounting him with punches. Breakker tosses Punk like a ragdoll before locking him up in the center of the ring. Breakker gets Punk back to his feet, and again Punk fights back. He looks for the GTS, but Breakker avoids and hits a back suplex for a nearfall. Paul Heyman hypes up Breakker from the outside as Breakker talks down Punk. He taunts him, calling him a bum as he continues to beat up Punk. But Punk doesn’t take it lying down and mounts a little more offense before Breakker once again whips him into the ropes and takes him down. Punk manages to counter and almost gets the GTS, but Breakker fights off again, and Breakker responds with a huge gutbuster. Breakker tosses Punk out of the ring before he leaves himself and revs up. But no, Punk scouts it and takes him out with a clothesline before we head to another break.

Back from commercial, and it’s still all Breakker as he’s got Punk up on the top rope. Breakker chases him up and goes for the Breakkensteiner, but Punk manages to stay put, sending Breakker headfirst into the mat. Punk keeps his position and lands the top rope elbow for a nearfall. Punk goes back up to the ringpost, but Breakker stops him. This time, however, Breakker lands the Breakkensteiner, but Punk kicks out at two. Breakker goads Punk to his feet and powers him above his head with a military press, but Punk counters into a DDT for a nearfall. Punk and Breakker engage in yay/boo fists on the mat before both men rise to their feet and continue hitting each other in the center of the ring. Punk takes Breakker down with some clotheslines and then a heel kick and a swinging neckbreaker. Punk charges Breakker with a running knee in the corner and another clothesline before he goes back to the top. Punk takes his time and hits another diving elbow as he looks for the GTS. Heyman gets to the apron for the distraction. The Vision makes its way out, and Punk clears the ring briefly, but it’s a numbers game. Breakker knocks Punk into the official, allowing the Vision to take over. Austin Theory hits Punk with a stomp and Breakker covers, but Punk kicks out at two.

Bronson Reed clears the announce table as Penta, Dragon Lee, and Rey Mysterio show up to take out the Vision. The luchadors clear Reed of the ring and continue to fight off Logan Paul and Theory. Everyone is fighting into the crowd as it’s back to just Punk and Breakker in the ring. Breakker gets to his feet first, but Punk scouts the spear and hits the GTS. Breakker kicks out at two! Punk gets Breakker back to his feet and hits a piledriver for another nearfall. Punk again looks for the GTS, but Breakker counters and locks in an armbar in the center of the ring. Punk reverses into a roll-up, but Breakker doesn’t release the hold. Punk rolls through and into the anaconda vise, but Breakker powers out and hits Punk with a gutbuster and clothesline for a nearfall. Both men are spent, wondering what more they need to do. Breakker signals for the GTS, but Punk fights off and locks in the STF. Breakker makes his way to the ropes to force the break, but Punk forces him back to the middle. Heyman is back on the apron, and Punk grabs him and punches him. Breakker goes for another spear, but Punk moves out of the way and sends Breakker to the outside. Punk misses a suicide dive as Breakker hits him with a forearm. Punk moves to the announce table, but Breakker comes off the ringpost for a massive elbow from miles away. Breakker drags Punk into the ring, and he’s dazed. But Punk stops another spear, intercepting him with a knee and then a GTS. The future is still the future, and Punk is still the present. What a title match.

Punk is handed his title and celebrates on the ropes as Breakker lies on the outside of the ring. And that’s all she wrote.

Credit: WWE/ Netflix

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on the WWE Raw results and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
