The World Heavyweight Championship match closed out the Royal Rumble once, which was a rarity. However, entering as the World Heavyweight Champion at the Rumble proved to be successful, as every champion who walked in with the Big Gold Belt walked out as champion.

6. Triple H Vs. Scott Steiner – Royal Rumble 2003

The first World Heavyweight Championship match at the Royal Rumble in 2003 happened to be the worst. Triple H put his title on the line against Scott Steiner. The Game and Big Poppa Pump stunk out the joint in an underwhelming World Heavyweight Championship match. However, both were major names in the company, but their chemistry didn’t mesh, resulting in one of the worst World Title matches in WWE history.

Steiner and Triple H clashed for just under 20 minutes. The Game bled profusely during his title defense, which is the norm in high-profile Triple H matches. Nevertheless, Triple H couldn’t beat Big Poppa Pump cleanly. He resorted to nailing Steiner in the sternum with his signature sledgehammer, with the fans displeased by what they were witnessing as Triple H retained via disqualification.

5. However, there was a curveball with Batista relinquishing the World Heavyweight Championship. A battle royal was held for the vacant World Heavyweight Championship, and the Olympic Gold Medalist prevailed.

Angle turned face, entering an underwhelming rivalry with Mark Henry over the World Heavyweight Championship. He returned to the blue brand as a full-time member once again.

Their match at the 2006 Royal Rumble bizarrely went on last after the 2006 Royal Rumble match and followed Edge and John Cena’s WWE Championship match. The match itself wasn’t good, and Angle nailed the World’s Strongest Man with a couple of earth-shattering chair shots en route to retaining the title.

Afterward, Undertaker appeared on a horse and carriage, and he let his intentions be known that he’s next in line to face Angle for the World Heavyweight Championship. The ring became detached afterward.

4. Batista Vs. Mr. Kennedy – Royal Rumble 2007

Mr. Kennedy boasted several victories over former world champions in 2006, but the 2007 Royal Rumble determined to see if Kennedy could do it when it mattered most. The former United States Champion challenged Batista for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Their title match is often forgotten about, and Kennedy targeted the Animal’s knee throughout. However, Kennedy bled from the nose and halted Batista’s momentum when he attempted to get back into the match.

Batista regrouped by working his way back into the match. The Game defended his title against former Evolution stablemate Randy Orton. However, there was a huge caveat as Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff banned Evolution from ringside. This occurred due to constant outside interference in JBL, Big Show, and Kurt Angle’s WWE Championship match.

In their series of matches, this title bout often gets forgotten bout. Both had their wooking boots on in a solid World Heavyweight Championship match. However, the Cerebral Assassin proved how good he was, and when the referee was knocked down, he attempted to use the sledgehammer but opted not to. In the end, the Game retained the World Heavyweight Championship once again at the Rumble by sealing the deal with the Pedigree.

2. Edge Vs. Still, a couple of years later, the Rated-R Superstar ensured that lightning didn’t strike twice in his World Heavyweight Championship title defense against Rey Mysterio. The former WWE Tag Team Champions did an excellent job in a highly competitive title match. However, the Master of the 619 began to favor his knee, which Edge expertly targeted.

Things were on a level playing field after the referee sent Curt Hawkins and Zak Ryder back to the locker room. Mysterio was closing in on his second world title after he executed the 619 and splash, but Vickie Guerrero intervened by pulling the referee. Moreover, that didn’t stop Mysterio from using the 619 again.

He didn’t care that Vickie took the brunt of his second 619, which bought Edge some time to get up, and spearing Mysterio in mid-air. The Rated-R Superstar covered Mysterio to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.

1. Triple H Vs. The Game and the Heartbreak Kid knocked it out of the park in a fantastic title match. Both were motivated and desperate to leave with the World Heavyweight Championship.

Michaels attempted to put Triple H through the broadcast table, but the Game moved out of the way. However, Michaels shed buckets of blood, and the crowd was going berserk for Michaels. Triple H also wore the proverbial crimson mask. Furthermore, Triple H geared up with the Pedigree, but Michaels managed to get up and nailed the Game with Sweet Chin Music.

Michaels tried to get back up, but he didn’t muster enough strength to do so. The fans booed the decision as they wanted a definitive winner, but Triple H retained the World Heavyweight Championship with Evolution checking on him after the match.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on WWE Royal Rumble and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
