In some instances, if a competitor failed to win the WWE Championship, they’d compete in the Royal Rumble match later on.

6. Brock Lesnar Vs. Holly only got this opportunity as Lesnar broke his neck in September 2002. However, Holly, looking to win the biggest title of his career, was never going to win this title match.

The former Hardcore Champion was hellbent on exacting revenge and hurting the reigning WWE Champion. Furthermore, there wasn’t anything special about this WWE Championship match. Holly wasn’t worthy of challenging for the WWE Championship at the Rumble, and inevitably, Lesnar retained the WWE Championship with an F-5.

5. JBL Vs. As expected, the heels worked as a cohesive unit in a bid to remove the World’s Largest Athlete from the equation. Their plan worked temporarily as the Olympic Gold Medalist put Show through the broadcast table after clocking him in the head with a TV monitor.

With Show out of the picture, JBL and Angle went back-and-forth. However, Show refused to stay down for long as he rejoined the match. Show speared JBL through the barricade. Angle’s proteges, Luther Reigns and Mark Jindrak, interfered by attacking Show. The Rated-R Superstar successfully cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase after Cena retained the WWE Championship in a grueling Elimination Chamber match.

Nevertheless, Edge beat Cena immediately afterward to become WWE Champion for the first time. The hotly anticipated first proper match between the two rivals featured at the 2006 Royal Rumble. Their title match was positioned after Rey Mysterio’s victory in the 2006 Royal Rumble match.

Edge and Cena’s feud dominated the early part of 2006 and the summer and fall of the year. However, their WWE Championship match was steady, and the pair went on to have better clashes with each other. Lita stood on the apron, and Cena sidestepped with Edge, inadvertently pushing her off it. Cena executed the FU, following it up with an STFU, and he forced the Rated-R Superstar to submit with Cena regaining the WWE Championship.

3. Randy Orton Vs. The Charismatic Enigma entered the 2008 Royal Rumble as the reigning Intercontinental Champion. However, the reigning WWE Champion, Randy Orton, was standing in his way, and the Age of Orton was upon us.

The MSG crowd was heavily backing Hardy to enter the record books, holding the WWE and Intercontinental Championships simultaneously. The Ultimate Warrior was the last person to achieve that feat, 18 years prior.

Orton dominated the match, but the crowd was giving Hardy some energy to get back into proceedings. However, the finish was outstanding as Hardy attempted the Twist of Fate, but the Legend Killer countered it into the RKO out of nowhere. The Legend Killer retained the WWE Championship in an entertaining title bout.

2. Kurt Angle Vs. Chris Benoit – Royal Rumble 2003

For the second time in three years, Kurt Angle defended the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble. The Olympic Gold Medalist regained the WWE Championship from Big Show at Armageddon 2002. However, he wasted no time in turning heel by siding with Paul Heyman and starting up Team Angle. Nevertheless, Angle’s WWE Championship was at stake with Chris Benoit looking to dethrone him for the title.

As expected, Angle and Benoit’s WWE Championship match was a technical masterclass. The three-time WWE Champion didn’t have everything his way, but he found a way, and he retained the WWE Championship with his patented Angle Lock. Unlike his successful title defense in 2001, Angle managed to follow it up by successfully walking into WrestleMania as the reigning WWE Champion.

1. John Cena Vs.
