The “Never Seen 17” tapped out to Gunther in his final wrestling match at Saturday Night’s Main Event XLII on December 13, 2025. The Cenation was understandably shocked by the anticlimactic finish. Nonetheless, they showered the Champ with “Thank You, Cena” chants as he walked backstage.

Cena’s WWE career may be over, but his legacy will live on forever. The 17-time World Champion remains a role model for multiple generations, having supported kids, teens, or adults like a parent for 23 years. On that note, let’s examine four lessons John Cena taught us.

#4. As Times Change, You Must Evolve

If you look at John Cena’s WWE career, you’ll find a consistent pattern of adaptability and evolution. Cena started as “The Prototype,” but that didn’t work as he failed to connect with the audience. Fortunately, he struck gold as “The Doctor of Thuganomics.”

As a freestyle rapper, Cena connected with the WWE Universe. At the height of the Ruthless Aggression Era, the Champ continued his aggressive and violent ways. This attitude was on full display during his storied rivalries with Kurt Angle and Edge. However, WWE soon entered the PG Era, and they needed a likeable, child-friendly poster boy at the helm.

Enter John Cena, who essentially became “Super Cena” in the PG Era. Cena stood up as the morally upright and resilient hero against the diabolical villain Randy Orton. Not to mention, it was the same character that provided the perfect contrast to CM Punk’s anti-hero arc in the summer of 2011.

Newer stars emerged as the company headed into a new era. During this time, Cena took a few steps away from the spotlight and began putting over rising stars like Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins, and Kevin Owens. The Champ’s WWE career began to slow down as he began a Hollywood career.

All of these adaptations and character changes were a testament to Cena’s versatility as a WWE performer. Regardless of the era, Cena always found a way to remain relevant and connect with the audience.

#3. John Cena Always Stayed True To Himself

It was only during the last few years of his WWE career that fans truly began accepting John Cena. Before the pandemic, a vocal section of the audience also hurled insults against Cena and rejected essentially everything he did.

Yet, despite the vehement criticism, Cena remained a company man and stayed true to himself. As the crowd booed him out of the building, the 17-time World Champion did his best to entertain the audience and always interacted kindly with them.

Although he turned heel during his farewell tour, it was evident that he was struggling as a villain, as it put him in an unnatural position. Hence, Cena inspired everyone to embrace their inner beauty and stay true to themselves.

#2. Cena Taught An Entire Generation To Never Give Up

Any person who grew up watching John Cena must have heard The Greatest of All Time utter the sentence, “the only time we say never is when we say never give up.” Cena’s entire legacy was built on unwavering resilience and superhuman strength.

No matter how tough the task, the Leader of the Cenation was up for the challenge. The Rock defeated Cena in the main event of WrestleMania 28, but the Champ redeemed himself the following year. As JBL very aptly described, Cena was “Big Match John,” who won matches when it mattered the most.

For more than two decades, Cena hadn’t submitted to any opponent, but he finally tapped out to Gunther in his final match. Before, he made sure to leave a legacy of never giving up and stepping up to the task.

#1. Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect

Michael Cole has often reminded everyone that “Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect” is not John Cena’s character. It was a way of life for the “Never Seen 17.” If the last 23 years are any indication, it is hard to disagree with Cole as Cena indeed lived up to his motto.

Hustle

Very few have hustled the way Cena did in his prime. For nearly 12 years, the Champ was consistently on the road representing WWE at the highest level. He was regular, consistent, and determined. The future Hall of Famer rarely got injured, and on the rare occasion he did, Cena made quick and remarkable recoveries.

Loyalty

As for loyalty, Cena was devoted to the Cenation. In addition to staying true to his character, the Leader of the Cenation walked the extra mile to put smiles on the faces of his fans. His unprecedented legacy with the “Make a Wish” foundation is a living testament to his unwavering devotion.

And Respect

Perhaps the biggest reason the WWE locker room was so emotional about Cena’s retirement is the impact he left on them. John Cena was respectful to the entire WWE crew. He would go out of his way to help them and shower them with immeasurable love.

All of these qualities endeared Cena to the fanbase, who eventually grew to respect him deeply. He may have retired, but he taught an entire generation a very admirable way of life.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on John Cena and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
