Arguably, WWE’s rivalry of the year, although Randy Orton and Christian’s feud over the World Heavyweight Championship dominated SmackDown, may have something to say about it. However, the reigning World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk has declared that he isn’t retiring anytime soon. This article will revisit one of the all-time great feuds and pay tribute to the legacies of both men.

7. CM Punk Vs. On Raw’s landmark 1,000th episode, John Cena challenged CM Punk for the WWE Championship. After many battles in 2011, Cena and Punk clashed for the first time in 2012. There was a caveat as The Rock declared that he’ll be challenging for the WWE Championship at the 2013 Royal Rumble.

The Straight Edge Savior and Cena had a decent match, but as soon as the match was going to get to the next level, Big Show interfered. Show attacked Cena, leading to Cena becoming the first Money in the Bank holder to fail and unsuccessfully win their championship match after a cash-in.

6. No. Did CM Punk depart SummerSlam 2011 with the WWE Championship? No. Alberto Del Rio emerged as the WWE Champion at the end of SummerSlam 2011. Both Cena and Punk were reeling with the events that unfolded at SummerSlam, and both believed they were entitled to a WWE Championship rematch against Del Rio.

However, on Raw’s August 22, 2011 edition, the rivals clashed in a number one contender’s match with the winner to meet Del Rio at Night of Champions 2011 for the WWE Championship.

As expected, Punk and Cena gave it their all with both desperate to be in contention for a WWE Championship shot. Furthermore, the crowd in Saudi Arabia was treated to a special match between the two legends.

The crowd was red-hot and chanted “John Cena sucks” throughout his entrance. With both men in their 40s, they were a tad slower, but their match was still watchable. However, interference aplenty, and Mr. Money in the Bank, Seth Rollins, teased a cash-in.

Moreover, Rollins nailed Punk with a Stomp, but Cena intervened and pushed Rollins out of the ring. Using heelish tactics, Cena covered the Straight Edge Savior and retained the WWE Championship.

4. CM Punk Vs. CM Punk and John Cena’s epic rematch took place for the Undisputed WWE Championship. The COO of WWE, Triple H, oversaw proceedings as the special guest referee.

Their title bout didn’t reach the heights of their Money in the Bank 2011 matchup, but their match was still a high-level encounter. As expected, there were some good exchanges between the two reigning WWE Champions.

Punk’s GTS wasn’t enough to get over the line in the first instance. However, Punk saw off his great rival for the second straight PPV in succession to be crowned as the Undisputed WWE Champion with a second GTS. The Straight Edge Savior was a Paul Heyman Guy. Punk, enjoying his 302nd day as the reigning WWE Champion, put his title on the line against Cena.

However, Punk was looking to spoil the party as Cena competed in his hometown state of Massachusetts inside TD Garden. The Voice of the Voiceless dropped the WWE Championship to The Rock at the 2013 Royal Rumble, but failed to win it back in their rematch at Elimination Chamber 2013. However, Punk attempted to take Cena’s 2013 Royal Rumble match-winning title opportunity away from him in their number one contender’s match.

Arguably, Cena and Punk contested the greatest match in the history of Raw. A big fight feel as expected, and neither man was leaving anything to chance. Punk was desperate and connected with a piledriver, which had been banned in recent years. Even Cena upped it another gear by executing a rare hurricanrana. Inevitably, a Cena vs. Rock II match was on the cards in the main event of WrestleMania 29, with Punk’s dreams extinguished by Cena.

1. John Cena Vs.
