For sure, it promises to be an emotional occasion when Cena takes on The “Ring General” Gunther. Gunther is one of the best modern-day heels in WWE right now. However, Cena became the face of WWE in the Ruthless Aggression Era, and every top babyface needs a rival to joust with. Cena found his dancing partner in the form of “The Rated-R Superstar” Edge.

Cena and Edge’s feud started in 2006, and it had been on-and-off for a further three years. They battled over the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship. Their feud was fascinating to watch as both men were desperate to be the top guy with the top prize in their grasp. Cena and Edge’s battles promised to be enticing encounters. And both men have defeated each other for world championships, showing how evenly matched they are.

RELATED: John Cena And The 4 Best Holders Of The WWE Championship Spinner Belt

28 WWE world titles between Cena and Edge showcase their greatness. Edge won the Money in the Bank ladder match, and John Cena defeated JBL to win the WWE Championship for the first time. Nine months later, at New Year’s Revolution 2006, Edge unsuccessfully challenged Ric Flair for the Intercontinental Championship. However, Cena overcame Kurt Angle, Shawn Michaels, Chris Masters, Kane, and Carlito in a grueling Elimination Chamber match to retain the WWE Championship. Afterward, Mr. McMahon stated that Edge would be cashing in his Money in the Bank contract.

Cena was in no fit state to be defending his WWE Championship. He was battered and bloodied. The Rated-R Superstar with Lita in tow nailed Cena with a Spear, but Cena kicked out. However, a second Spear was enough for Edge to win the WWE Championship for the first time. The match was abrupt as expected, but it was a memorable moment in the Rated-R Superstar’s career. It also ended Cena’s 280-day WWE Championship reign in the process.

5. Edge defended the WWE Championship with Cena looking to reclaim the title he lost to Rob Van Dam at ECW One Night Stand 2006, all thanks to Edge. Nevertheless, it was abundantly clear that Edge and Cena were going to have further rematches, and the match wasn’t anything special.

Cena had the upper hand several times, and Lita repeatedly interfered on Edge’s behalf. H executed the FU on Edge, and Lita pulled the referee out of the ring. Cena cinched in the STFU with Edge submitting, but the referee didn’t see it. The conniving Lita slapped the referee in the face, and Edge was disqualified. Furthermore, Cena failed to regain the WWE Championship, but afterward, he had the last laugh as he put Edge through a broadcast table with the FU.

4. Edge Vs. The Rated-R Superstar’s WWE Championship was up for grabs, and Edge was desperate for his WWE Championship reign not to last just three weeks. Nevertheless, Cena was a man on a mission, and nothing was going to stop him from holding the WWE Championship again. Edge and Cena’s WWE Championship match was average; they didn’t get out of first gear of making this bout an epic.

Their match was after the 2006 Royal Rumble match. Rare that the WWE Championship match would happen after the Rumble. Nevertheless, Cena had a grand entrance before the match. Nonetheless, Lita’s repeated interference backfired as Edge inadvertently knocked her off the apron. Cena capitalized by executing the FU and followed it up with an STFU, leaving Edge no choice but to submit, with Cena clinching his second WWE Championship.

3. The bitter rivals closed out SummerSlam 2006 in a quality main event. Cena, competing in his home state of Massachusetts, had the slight advantage. However, the Rated-R Superstar constantly reminded the WWE Women’s Champion, Lita, who was in his corner, not to get Edge disqualified.

The atmosphere was electric, and Cena looked poised to win the WWE Championship. However, Edge had another trick up his sleeve when the referee’s back was turned. After regaining the World Heavyweight Championship from Edge at WrestleMania XXV in a Triple Threat match that included both men and The Big Show, Edge and Cena closed out Backlash 2009 with the World Heavyweight Championship on the line. They hit a home run in arguably the greatest Last Man Standing match in WWE history.

During the match, Cena used his initiative, and he executed the Attitude Adjustment on Edge and launched him into the crowd. Nevertheless, Edge nailed Cena with a con-chair-to, but somehow Cena recovered. However, Cena had Edge on his shoulders and was looking for the AA. Big Show interfered and chokeslammed Cena into a spotlight. The ending was shocking, but the Rated-R Superstar was the beneficiary, clinching his ninth World Championship.

1. There was a caveat that if Cena failed to beat Edge for the WWE Championship in their TLC match, Cena would move to SmackDown. The deck was stacked against Cena as Edge was a specialist in TLC matches. Furthermore, the TLC match took place in Edge’s hometown of Toronto, Canada.

Edge and Cena stole the show in a fantastic TLC match. However, Edge took his fair share of punishment by going through several tables. In the closing stages, Cena executed the FU on Edge, dumping him through a couple of tables. And Cena, for the third time, became the WWE Champion.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on John Cena and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
