We also saw WWE’s legends come in droves, with the likes of Trish Stratus, Mark Henry, Shawn Michaels, and Cena’s first-ever opponent in WWE, Kurt Angle, to pay their respects to the “Never Seen 17.” Joe Tessitore was the voice that guided us to begin the night, with 2026 WWE Hall-of-Fame inductee Stephanie McMahon joining him.

Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes vs. NXT Champion Oba Femi

For the first bout of the evening, we kick it off in style as Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes enters the arena, ready to take on the monster known as the NXT Champion, Oba Femi. The match began with both champions trying to feel each other out by initiating a series of lock-ups.

However, things would quickly escalate as Femi’s undeniable power would overwhelm Rhodes. Femi would hit an Irish Curse Backbreaker on Cody, and proceeded to throw him around for a long spell. Rhodes would get his bearings back, hitting a Cody Cutter to turn the tide.

Rhodes would get a little overzealous, trying for another Cody Cutter in quick succession. But for a moment, Femi would counter. The “American Nightmare” would recover amazingly quickly, hitting a Suicide Dive on Femi after tossing him out of the ring.

Once again, Rhodes gets impatient and gets caught by a crushing Spinebuster. Femi would take the action outside the ring, hitting Rhodes with a mammoth Running European Uppercut while Cody was on the announcer’s table. This move led to Cody getting his ear cut, as blood spewed out.

Rhodes would still fight it out, countering with an Avalanche Cody Cutter to bring down the NXT Champion. As Rhodes was going in for the kill, Drew McIntyre would interfere, leading to a disqualification. Femi saw this and was absolutely irate, getting into a shoving match with McIntyre.

Rhodes would execute a Cross Rhodes on Drew, then Oba would get his shot in by delivering an explosive Chokeslam on the “Scottish Psychopath.” The two champions would raise each other’s hands, paying respects to one another in an otherwise great bout, before McIntyre would rear his ugly head.

Bayley vs. Sol Ruca

In the battle of the past and present of NXT, former multiple-time world champion Bayley takes on the high-flying, exciting, risk-taking former NXT Women’s North American and WWE Women’s Speed Champion, Sol Ruca.

This match was an amazing clash of styles. Early in the match, Bayley tried to ground Ruca by focusing on different specific body parts, such as her arm. However, Ruca would be way too much for Bayley to handle, hitting Bayley in literally all angles.

Sol was a highlight reel tonight, hitting insane moves such as a Handspring Moonsault from the ring on the outside on Bayley, as well as a Cartwheel on the ropes into a DDT. Bayley would not go away easily, almost winning the match with a Bayley-to-Belly, and in the closing moments of the bout, a Rose Plant after countering a Sol Snatcher attempt.

Bayley got caught near the ring posts when Ruca would reverse Bayley’s offense into an O’Connor Roll. Bayley would kick out. But Ruca would use that momentum to climb the ropes in one swift motion, delivering an amazing Sol Snatcher.

Instinctively, Bayley would try to roll out of the ring. Ruca would catch her, but apparently. Bayley was playing possum, executing an inverted Jacknife cover. Ruca would reverse this into her own pinning attempt, defeating Bayley in an amazing display. The two would share a very respectful handshake, as Sol Ruca notched the biggest win of her career.

AJ Styles & Dragon Lee vs. Je’Von Evans & Leon Slater

The grandfather of TNA Wrestling’s X-Division and current World Tag Team Champion, the legendary “Phenomenal One” AJ Styles, teams with his championship partner Dragon Lee, as they take on the new generation of risk-takers in NXT’s own Je’Von Evans and the youngest and current TNA X-Division Champion Leon Slater. This match left the WWE Universe breathless.

In the first 30 seconds of the match, Slater and Evans would hit the World Tag Team Champions with stereo Superkicks. Evan got a ton of “bouncy,” hitting a Suicide Dive Body Press to take out Styles. Slater would execute a Corkscrew Press over the ring post onto Dragon Lee.

For most of the match, the young guns took control. Lee would turn the tide by hitting a Liger Bomb, allowing Styles to enter the match for the first time. While AJ managed to muster a Phenomenal Comeback, Slater and Evans would not let up, unleashing a relentless onslaught.

With Lee out and Styles isolated, Je’Von would hit an OG Cutter, and Leon Slater took the air out of the Capital One Arena with an incredible Swanton 450 Splash. In a display of guts, Styles would kick out. Dragon Lee would take Evans out of the equation with a Swan Dive on the outside.

Slater would try to hit Styles with his own finisher, the Styles Clash, but AJ would counter. Slater would not let Styles finish off the match, fighting the veteran off. Styles would get his hits in and go for Phenomenal Forearm. But in an unfortunate turn of events, Styles would slip off the top rope.

Slater would scale the ring and try for his own aerial offensive move, Styles would catch him and take him out with a Style Clash, and win the match. All four celebrated after this breakneck pace of a match.

Before the main event started, The Miz would protest that he was a main character in the story of Cena, and wanted everyone to stop pretending he wasn’t. R-Truth would interfere in proceedings, exposing Miz for tampering with the entries, and taking a guy’s spot, which was Joe Hendry. When his name was said, he appeared.

Hendy would hit a slam on The Miz, but R-Truth and Hendry would hit a Ten-Knuckle Shuffle on the A-Lister. R-Truth would make a ceremonial three-count as Hendry pinned Miz in this unofficial match.

John Cena vs. Gunther

The last time is now, ladies and gentlemen. John Cena calls it an illustrious and legendary career as he takes on the “Ring General” Gunther in his final match ever. Gunther would come out first with a chorus of boos raining down on him.

The Capital One Arena came unglued when John Cena’s music hit, with the crowd singing along. Lilian Garcia, who nearly broke out in tears, made a heartfelt announcement of the name of John Cena for one final time as the bell rang one last time on the in-ring career of the “G.O.A.T.”

Cena did everything in his power in a stellar matchup against a monster he had never faced before. Cena pulled out all the stops, Shoulder Blocks, Spin-out Powerbombs, Five-Knuckle Shuffles, multiple Attitude Adjustments, an Avalanche AA, an AA through the announcer’s table, and even locking in Gunther in STF-U at the beginning of the match.

Unfortunately, Gunther was too much for even the mighty John Cena to overcome.

Gunther was cold and methodical throughout, practically playing with his food. Even when Cena mustered a comeback, Gunther would put a stop to it immediately. Multiple German Suplexes, Powerbombs, and even a crushing Splash, the Ring General threw everything at Cena.

For multiple minutes at a time, Gunther would lock in the Sleeper Hold, but Cena would not give up. But even “Super Cena” himself has a limit. On the very final attempt of Gunther, with the Sleeper Hold locked in and all his weight on Cena’s neck, John, with a smile on his face, knew he had to submit, and he did.

It was heartbreaking, but Cena showed why he is the greatest, bar none, to ever do it in WWE. Deservingly so, the entire WWE locker room would spill out into the arena, including Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk, who would hand over their titles to the “Last Real Champion,” honoring him in the biggest way.

WWE CCO Paul “Triple H” Levesque would thank and congratulate John, as he pointed to a screen where a tribute video that showcased his career was playing. John Cena would walk up the ramp for one final time in his career, thanking everyone and walking off into the sunset.

WWE Universe, that’s a wrap for the absolute “Greatest of All-Time,” John Cena.

Thank you, Cena.

That’s all REAL-TIME WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event (SNME) XLII results for December 13, 2025, as they happened in the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on the WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event (SNME) XLII results, John Cena, and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
