Although “The Greatest of All Time” had announced his retirement plans way in advance, his swan song will be difficult for the Cenation to digest. Fortunately, WWE fans can find solace in the countless memories Cena has created over the years.

Over 23 years, Cena has been involved in some of the most important and memorable matches in WWE history. It would be impossible to list all of them, but here we narrow down 5 essential encounters every fan needs to watch.

#5. JBL (c) vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 21

From an in-ring perspective, JBL vs. John Cena was never going to top Shawn Michaels vs. Kurt Angle. However, it was the more important match as it set the stage for the main event scene of the next decade in WWE.

There was nothing special about the in-ring action, and the crowd felt tired. Nonetheless, this was still Cena’s biggest match until that point. JBL had been a dominant WWE Champion, and Cena had been quietly rising through the ranks of the pecking order. JBL was the ideal villain for the Superman gimmick Cena had been assigned.

The FU Cena delivered to JBL to win his first World Championship was a clear statement: Super Cena had arrived, and was here to say. Until WrestleMania 21, we had seen glimpses of The Champ as a major star. The win over JBL solidified Cena’s position atop the food chain.

#4. John Cena (c) vs. Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam 2014

If WrestleMania 21 was the night Super Cena was born, SummerSlam 2014 was the night Super Cena died. For years, WWE fans had complained about John Cena’s stranglehold over the upper echelons of sports entertainment. He was the undisputed “number one guy,” and he never lost. On the rare occasion Cena lost, there were bound to be shenanigans.

Hence, when Brock Lesnar, who had recently ended The Undertaker’s undefeated WrestleMania streak, obliterated John Cena and took The Champ to Suplex City at SummerSlam 2014, fans were appalled beyond description. Cena was no match for The Beast Incarnate. Without any shenanigans, Lesnar snatched the WWE World Heavyweight Championship from the Leader of the Cenation.

Although he lost that night, Cena earned a lot of respect. The Champ put over Lesnar big time. All those whispers of Cena burying talent or taking too much of the spotlight died at SummerSlam 2014. Fans began to see a more vulnerable version of The Never Seen 17, which endeared him to the audience in his final years as an active competitor.

#3. John Cena vs. AJ Styles at Crown Jewel 2025

When John Cena announced his farewell tour, every fan wanted AJ Styles to be an integral part of Cena’s retirement run. The Champ and The Phenomenal One had undeniable chemistry together, and it would’ve been rather unreasonable never to revisit their rivalry one last time.

Due to considerable fan demand, WWE finally booked John Cena vs. AJ Styles at Crown Jewel. There was no build for this match as it was announced randomly on social media. Yet, it ended up being arguably the greatest match in Cena’s farewell tour.

Cena vs. Styles at Crown Jewel 2025 can be aptly described as a “love letter to professional wrestling.” We had seen the WWE vs. TNA dynamic play out before, but this time, they took things to a different level. Both rivals paid tribute to fellow stars who had been instrumental in their respective careers.

From Styles hitting Angel’s Wings to Cena executing the Sister Abigail, Styles and Cena dug into the playbook of virtually every prominent WWE wrestler. There was not a single dull moment in their epic encounter, and fans thoroughly enjoyed their last dance.

#2. John Cena (c) vs. CM Punk for the WWE Championship at Money in the Bank 2011

“The Summer of Punk” in 2011 revolved around CM Punk’s anti-hero tactics and Vince McMahon, but there was one major player in this entire narrative that never gets enough credit: John Cena.

Following CM Punk’s Pipebomb promo, the hype was insane for his clash with Cena at Money in the Bank 2011. Punk’s contract was set to expire at MITB 2011, and he had vowed to run away with the WWE Championship. This would have left the world’s leading pro wrestling promotion without its greatest symbol. It seemed impossible, but that’s exactly what happened in Chicago on July 17, 2011.

John Cena vs. CM Punk at MITB 2011 was the stuff of legend, and it had every right to be a five-star classic. Chicago was red hot as the crowd was clearly biased in Punk’s favor. The action was intense, well-paced, and competitive. Both men stayed true to their characters and told a great story in the squared circle.

The iconic image of Punk running away with the WWE Championship, while a frustrated and defeated Vince McMahon looked on helplessly, was one that fans still recall to this day.

#1. The Rock vs. John Cena at WrestleMania 28

By now, most fans are aware that pro wrestling is scripted. However, when there is hype and a sense of genuine realism to the storyline, WWE feels very real. The saga between The Rock and John Cena transcended sports entertainment and penetrated mainstream media.

This was not only due to their sheer starpower, but also the backstage conflict and differences both men shared. Rocky and Cena were never the best of friends, and The Champ had been openly critical of The Great One’s decision to leave WWE for Hollywood. The beauty of their rivalry was the way in which these dynamics played into their narrative heading into WrestleMania 28.

At WrestleMania 28, they met in a “Once in a Lifetime” bout. From top to bottom, this was a true spectacle. The entrances felt like a concert, the crowd was red hot, and the action had a Hollywood fight sequence feel. Fans expected Cena to win. Thus, the sight of The Great One pinning Cena and closing the show caught everyone off guard.

The “Once in a Lifetime” match was memorable and can never be replicated. It is also remembered for setting in motion Cena’s redemption arc, which culminated the following year at WrestleMania 29.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on John Cena and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
