Cena stepped up to face Kurt Angle in what is considered one of the best debuts ever. Unfortunately for the future 17-time World Champion, that’s where the momentum stopped. Cena struggled to connect with fans as a directionless, happy-go-lucky babyface with no true identity. Coming out to a generic theme song week after week certainly didn’t help.

Looking back, John Cena’s first theme song is easily his weakest. You just can’t picture a Road Warrior pop once Slam Smack hits. Everything about the track screams “filler time”, and that’s exactly the role Cena played during his original babyface run. After attacking Billy Kidman and turning heel, Cena dressed as Vanilla Ice on Halloween and did a freestyle rap. While the Doctor of Thuganomics gimmick only took off months later, that’s the night it was born. John Cena wasn’t quite there yet, but it was already much better than being SmackDown’s generic happy-go-lucky rookie.

During that time, Cena introduced a brand new theme song, Insert Bass Here. This song is mainly remembered as a stepping stone, as it kind of matched the new gimmick… but didn’t quite match the charisma Cena was starting to show on TV. Cena was taken out by Brock Lesnar the previous month, and he was back with vengeance on his mind.

Cena wrestled Rikishi that night in a fairly regular TV match that carries a lot more historical significance than it should. Not only did Cena debut Word Life that night, he also defeated Rikishi after hitting his very first Attitude Adjustment (known as the FU at the time).

Word Life is the track that turned John Cena from “the Velocity rookie” to WWE’s fastest rising star.
