The show took place in Cena’s hometown of Boston that year, and Cena defeated Jericho for the belt after a solid match. It’s hard to argue with this booking decision, but it’s a shame that Jericho didn’t get a longer championship run during this era. As we already mentioned, Chris Jericho became the Undisputed Champion at Vengeance 2001. While Jericho continued to carry both belts during this entire run, the WCW Title was retired on day one, and Jericho held the WWF Championship until WrestleMania 18. The reason why it’s not Jericho’s definitive world title reign? He was a paper champion.

I was told in the afternoon that I was going to win when Vince McMahon said to The Undertaker at the catering table, “Hey ‘Taker, how do you know the business is going down the toilet? “Because we’re putting the belt on Jericho,” and that’s how I found out I was going to be the champion. Jericho had never been world champion at that point, so Rock mentioned Jericho wouldn’t be able to beat him for the big one at No Mercy. It was simple storytelling that everyone could understand, and it worked.

Jericho got a tremendous reaction at No Mercy, with The Rock brilliantly working as the heel-in-peril. The two put on a spectacular bout that ended with Jericho beating Rock for the WCW World Championship. Jericho and Rock continued to feud from there, even becoming tag team champions at one point! Jericho eventually dropped the title to Rock on the November 5 Raw, just days after beating Kurt Angle inside a steel cage at Rebellion.

This reign only lasted 15 short days, but it helped Chris Jericho far more than the Undisputed Championship run.

1. 1st World Heavyweight Championship Reign (September 7, 2008-October 26, 2008)

Defeated For The Title: CM Punk (Unforgiven 2008)

Lost The Title To: Batista (Cyber Sunday 2008)

Days Held: 49

Successful Televised Title Defenses: 2

Vs.
