It’s the pinnacle of the WWE calendar, which every wrestler aspires to feature on. WrestleMania is so huge that casual wrestling fans will tune in to watch it.

For sure, not every WrestleMania has lived up to the billing, but the glitz and glamour of WrestleMania is hard to resist. WWE pulls out all the stops for a memorable WrestleMania with the best matches typically reserved for the Show of Shows.

While WrestleMania is the oldest PLE, Survivor Series is the second-oldest PLE. The first Survivor Series took place a couple of years after WrestleMania in 1987. Traditional Survivor Series elimination matches, and in recent years, War Games, have been the main selling point of Survivor Series.

However, as both WrestleMania and Survivor Series are a part of WWE’s “Big Four” events, there have been several instances where matches have taken place at both events. Some home runs have been hit in rematches at both WrestleMania and Survivor Series encounters, but some bouts have bored fans.

8. Mark Henry Vs. Ryback – WrestleMania 29 & Survivor Series 2013

Mark Henry and Ryback are two physical specimens, but their matches against each other were boring. The World’s Strongest Man and Ryback butted heads at WrestleMania 29. Henry was the heel, and Ryback was the babyface. The fans at MetLife Stadium didn’t care about this match, and Ryback attempted Shellshock, but Henry grabbed the ropes and flattened Ryback. Henry knocked off Ryback, but Ryback attacked Henry after the match.

A few months later, Ryback issued an open challenge at Survivor Series 2013, and Henry answered the call. The World’s Strongest Man debuted a new look as he was bald. The roles were reversed with Henry as the face and Ryback as the heel.

This bout was just as boring as their WrestleMania encounter, but their Survivor Series meeting was slightly better. The result remained the same, with Henry triumphant after executing the World’s Strongest Slam.

7. Bret Hart Vs. Bob Backlund – Survivor Series 1994 & WrestleMania 11

Bob Backlund challenged Bret Hart for the WWE Championship in a Throw in a Towel match at the 1994 edition of Survivor Series. Backlund’s return to WWE in 1992 was surprising, as was his shocking WWE Championship victory over the Hitman. Backlund’s WWE Championship win came out of nowhere, and his second WWE Title reign was short-lived, lasting just three days. It was his first WWE Championship reign in 11 years.

Surprisingly, that wasn’t the end of Hart and Backlund’s rivalry as they clashed five months later at WrestleMania 11. This time it was a submission match and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper oversaw proceedings as the special guest referee. Their Survivor Series 1994 encounter was miles better than their WrestleMania match. Hart deserved a better matchup against a marquee name, but he got his win back over the former two-time WWE Champion.

6. Brock Lesnar Vs. Goldberg – WrestleMania 20, Survivor Series 2016, WrestleMania 33

The rivalry between Brock Lesnar and Goldberg stemmed from early 2004 when Lesnar cost Goldberg the chance at winning the 2004 Royal Rumble match. Goldberg retaliated by causing Lesnar to lose the WWE Championship to Eddie Guerrero at No Way Out 2004, a month later.

Nevertheless, Goldberg and Lesnar were both departing WWE after WrestleMania 20, and fans did not care one single iota about the victor of their clash. Steve Austin was the special guest referee, and Goldberg saw off Lesnar at Mania 20.

Twelve years later, Goldberg and Lesnar clashed in Goldberg’s first match in a WWE ring since that fateful night at Survivor Series 2016. The outcome was shocking as Goldberg dispatched the Beast Incarnate in under 90 seconds. That wasn’t the end of their rivalry as their trilogy was completed at WrestleMania 33 when they battled over the Universal Championship.

Goldberg entered as the reigning Universal Champion, but Lesnar won the Universal Title for the first time in his career. Lesnar and Goldberg’s WrestleMania rematch was unquestionably their best matchup between the pair, writing the wrongs of their drab encounter in MSG.

5. The Undertaker Vs. Kane – WrestleMania 14, Survivor Series 1998, WrestleMania 20

The Undertaker and Kane’s rivalry is one of the best stories told in WWE history. Paul Bearer masterfully built up the Big Red Machine’s debut. Despite Kane debuting at Badd Blood: In Your House, 1997, Undertaker and Kane’s first encounter didn’t happen until five months later at WrestleMania 14.

Undertaker and Kane contested one of their best matches against each other here, and Kane looked like a monster. It took three Tombstones for the Deadman to get the better of his younger brother.

Bearer was no longer by his son Kane’s side when Undertaker and Kane clashed in the quarterfinals of the Deadly Game tournament at Survivor Series 1998. Bearer accompanied The Undertaker and played a pivotal role in The Undertaker advancing to the semis by holding Kane’s foot down after a Tombstone.

Furthermore, Undertaker and Kane collided once again at WrestleMania 20 in Undertaker’s return match as the Deadman. The brothers had a steady match, but the result was inevitable, with Undertaker going 12-0 at WrestleMania with his trademark Tombstone.

4. Roman Reigns Vs. Drew McIntyre – WrestleMania 35 & Survivor Series 2020

Drew McIntyre was one of Roman Reigns’ first major rivals when the Big Dog returned to WWE in 2019 after his cancer was in remission. Reigns and McIntyre clashed at WrestleMania 35 in just Reigns’ second match since his return to WWE. Their hard-hitting encounter lasted just 10 minutes, but it was designed for Reigns to get back into the swing of things and prevail against an experienced competitor in McIntyre.

Twelve months later, both Reigns and McIntyre could have walked out of WrestleMania 36 as world champions. However, McIntyre beat Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship, but Reigns remained at home during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, Reigns turned heel at SummerSlam 2020, and a week later, he won the Universal Championship.

Reigns and McIntyre clashed in the battle of world champions in the main event of Survivor Series 2020, and they stole the show in a remarkable match. Once again, the WWE Champion tasted defeat at the hands of the Tribal Chief in a far superior battle than their ‘Mania encounter, a year prior.

3. Bret Hart Vs. Shawn Michaels – Survivor Series 1992, WrestleMania 12, Survivor Series 1997

The real-life animosity between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels made their rivalry captivating to watch. The pair had a personal disdain for each other, but in the ring, they were professional. Their encounter in the main event of Survivor Series 1992 is the match that often doesn’t get spoken about because of their two following rematches.

The Hitman defeated the Intercontinental Champion HBK to retain the WWE Championship at the 1992 iteration of Survivor Series.

Their 60-minute Iron Man match at WrestleMania 12 for Hart’s WWE Championship is iconic. There are mixed reviews from wrestling fans and critics regarding the match itself. Nevertheless, Michaels’ boyhood dream came true when he defeated Hart for his first WWE Championship.

However, their clash at Survivor Series 1997 is unquestionably their most controversial. Once again, Hart entered as the reigning WWE Champion. Michaels was the European Champion and the first Grand Slam Champion in WWE history.

The Montreal Screwjob took place with Michaels locking Hart in the Sharpshooter. Hart didn’t submit, but Earl Hebner called for the bell with Michaels clinching his third WWE Championship. Hart and Michaels’ clashes were always good encounters, clashing at major events, with their Survivor Series ’97 clash the pick of the bunch.

2. They stole the show at WrestleMania 23 in their World Heavyweight Championship match. They had a “top that” attitude as they were placed in the middle of the card. Nevertheless, the Phenom dethroned Batista for the World Heavyweight Championship in a remarkable wrestling match, extending his WrestleMania unbeaten record to 15-0.

The rivals clashed once again at Survivor Series 2007, this time it was in a Hell in a Cell match for the Animal’s World Heavyweight Championship. They hit a home run in one of the best matches of the year. Batista retained the World Heavyweight Championship all thanks to outside interference from Edge.

1. Austin was on the up as a top star, and the 1996 King of the Ring winner taunted the Hitman. Leading to Hart returning to WWE at Survivor Series 1996, with Hart and Austin tearing the house down inside MSG. The New York crowd was in store for a treat with Hart registering a massive win over Austin.

Months later, at WrestleMania 13, neither Austin nor Hart was involved in the WWE Championship match despite Austin winning the Rumble and Hart being the runner-up. Somehow, they managed to top their match at Survivor Series with a five-star epic at ‘Mania.

This was the highlight of an underwhelming WrestleMania. Their submissions match with Ken Shamrock as the special guest referee was memorable. Austin became a star this night, and WWE pulled off the greatest double turn in history.

The Hitman turned heel with Austin becoming a babyface, with Hart applying the debilitating Sharpshooter with blood dripping down Austin’s face, with Austin passing out. This image became one of the most iconic visuals in the history of WrestleMania.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on this and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
