Survivor Series has a rich history as it’s the second-oldest PLE behind WrestleMania. The WWE Intercontinental Championship is one of the most prestigious championships in the history of professional wrestling. The title has been a launchpad for many wrestlers to go on and achieve greatness by becoming future WWE Champions.

RELATED: John Cena & The 4 Oldest Wrestlers To Win The Intercontinental Championship, Ranked By Age

Despite the Intercontinental Championship having a rich vein of history, the title has only been defended nine times at Survivor Series. That sounds surprising, but it’s not, considering the reigning Intercontinental Champion has featured in traditional Survivor Series matches, champion-versus-champion matches, and tournament matches at the event.

Nevertheless, the Intercontinental Championship has only changed hands twice at Survivor Series. Generally, Intercontinental Title bouts at Survivor Series have been outstanding contests, and others have completely missed the mark.

9. Big E Langston Vs. Curtis Axel – 2013

Curtis Axel dropped the WWE Intercontinental Championship to Big E Langston on the go-home episode of Raw on November 18, 2013. Axel was no longer a Paul Heyman guy and was looking to recapture the gold at Survivor Series 2013. Unfortunately, the crowd showed little interest in their Intercontinental Championship rematch.

Big E was in control at the start of the match until the son of the late Mr. Perfect worked his way back into the title match. Axel paid tribute to his dad by executing the Perfect Plex, but Big E kicked out. Their Intercontinental Championship match lasted under six minutes, and Big E inevitably retained the title with his patented Big Ending.

8. Owen Hart Vs. Steve Austin – 1997

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin suffered a near career-ending neck injury when Owen Hart dropped him on his neck with a devastating Tombstone Piledriver at SummerSlam 1997. Three months later, Austin was back in action, and he challenged “The Rocket” for the Intercontinental Championship at Survivor Series 1997. This time, Hart had the Canadian support with Survivor Series 1997 held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

He received a tremendous ovation, and Team Canada was in his corner. His brothers-in-law, Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart and The British Bulldog, accompanied him to the ring, as did Doug Furnas and Phil Lafon.

Austin was clearly still working his way back to full fitness, and their match was a brawl. Hart targeted Austin’s injured neck throughout. Nevertheless, the Texas Rattlesnake regained the Intercontinental Championship with a Stunner. Afterward, Furnas and Lafon were on the receiving end of a Stunner from the newly minted Intercontinental Champion.

7. Dolph Ziggler Vs. Kaval – 2010

Kaval, better known as Low-Ki and Senshi in his TNA days, won the second season of NXT. LayCool were his mentors, and with the victory, Kaval earned the right to challenge for a championship of his choosing. He cashed in that opportunity at Survivor Series 2010 when he challenged Dolph Ziggler for the Intercontinental Championship. Their Intercontinental Championship match was the first at Survivor Series in six years.

Their match wasn’t good or bad; it just served its purpose. Kaval attempted a corkscrew 450 splash, but Ziggler moved out of harm’s way. Ultimately, the Showoff rolled up Kaval and pulled the tights for leverage to continue his maiden Intercontinental Championship reign.

6. Test Vs. Edge – 2001

Test representing the Alliance, his Intercontinental Championship was at stake at Survivor Series 2001, as was Edge’s WCW United States Championship. The winner would unify the two titles. Their title unification match was underrated and exceeded many expectations.

Neither man was going to give up easily, with both kicking out of each other’s trademark finishers. Edge rolled up Test, and he became a four-time Intercontinental Champion. The WCW United States Championship was no more until Eddie Guerrero won the title in a tournament at Vengeance 2003, when the title was reactivated. Furthermore, at the time of writing, this is the most recent Intercontinental Championship title change to date at Survivor Series.

5. Chyna Vs. Chris Jericho – 1999

Chyna made history at No Mercy 1999 when she defeated Jeff Jarrett to become the first woman to hold the Intercontinental Championship. The Ninth Wonder of the World had no shortage of challengers, with Chris Jericho determined to bring Chyna’s Intercontinental Championship reign to a halt at Survivor Series 1999. There was a caveat as Y2J would have to undergo gender reassignment surgery if he failed to unseat Chyna for the title.

For sure, Jericho aided Chyna in giving her one of the best matches in her career. Despite Chyna’s popularity, fans were backing Jericho to win the Intercontinental Championship. Their title match was one of the highlights of a poor Survivor Series card, but Chyna retained the Intercontinental Championship with an Avalanche Pedigree.

4. The Miz Vs. Sami Zayn – 2016

The Miz and Sami Zayn collided over the Intercontinental Championship at the 2016 iteration of Survivor Series. Zayn received the hometown support with Survivor Series emanating from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada. If Zayn captured the Intercontinental Championship, he’d bring the championship to Raw. Miz, in his sixth Intercontinental Championship reign, regained the title from Ziggler five days before Survivor Series.

Miz and Zayn’s Intercontinental Championship match was highly competitive, and Zayn looked right at home in this bout. Zayn attempted the Helluva Kick, but the defending Intercontinental Champion sidestepped and cinched in the Figure Four Leglock on Zayn’s bad leg.

Zayn retaliated by locking in the Figure Four Leglock, but Miz’s wife, Maryse, proved to be a big distraction. She rang the bell with Zayn taking his eye off the ball, allowing Miz to cheat to retain the Intercontinental Championship by rolling up Zayn in a hard-fought battle.

3. The Miz – 2023

The rarity of Intercontinental Championship matches at Survivor Series ended in 2023 when the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion, Gunther, defended the strap against two-time WWE Champion The Miz.

Miz was looking to end the Ring General’s record-breaking Intercontinental Championship reign by becoming a record-equaling nine-time Intercontinental Champion. Not many gave Miz a chance before the bell sounded, but Miz outsmarted Gunther by working on his leg and slamming it into the ringpost.

The crowd thought that Miz was poised to win the Intercontinental Championship as he low blowed Gunther and executed the Skull Crushing Finale. The crowd went wild, but Gunther kicked out.

There was a callback to Bret Hart and Steve Austin’s match at Survivor Series 1996 when Miz attempted to roll up Gunther. However, it was a valiant effort from Miz, but Gunther’s 592-day reign as Intercontinental Champion continued when he forced Miz to submit to the debilitating Liontamer.

2. Shelton Benjamin Vs. Christian – 2004

For two decades, Shelton Benjamin and Christian’s Intercontinental Championship match was the greatest Intercontinental Championship match in the history of Survivor Series in 2004. Christian debuted his “Just Close Your Eyes” theme song by Waterproof Blonde with Christian’s “problem solver”, Tyson Tomko, accompanying him to the ring. As expected, this match was fast-paced, and fans were captivated by what they were witnessing.

Christian planted Benjamin with a diving reverse DDT from the top rope, but Benjamin regrouped. Furthermore, Christian attempted the Unprettier, but Benjamin countered it and proved that his Intercontinental Championship reign was no fluke as he put Christian away with the T-Bone suplex.

1. He showcased his tremendous athleticism throughout by leaping in the air and taking down Kaiser.

Sheamus was close to winning the title, but Breakker speared Kaiser into next week onto the outside. Sheamus was still in Breakker’s path, but Breakker put Sheamus away with a vicious spear to continue his Intercontinental Championship run.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on WWE Survivor Series and other news stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
