Its creation involved teams of 5 or 4 wrestlers in the ultimate battle of survival. There was no other show in WWE like it, and it became a Thanksgiving tradition for World Wrestling Entertainment.

Since 1987, we have been lucky enough to have Survivor Series come into our homes. It’s always a fun night to see the pairings that WWE comes up with. Teams comprised of great wrestlers vying to ensure their team walks away victorious. It’s always a fun night of professional wrestling.

How the teams are put together is the best part of Survivor Series. Throughout the years, some truly amazing teams have been assembled for the Survivor Series. Groups of men or women who have etched their name in the lore of Survivor Series history. Below is the definitive list of these great Survivor Series teams.

Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Jeff Hardy, Matt Hardy & CM Punk (Team DX, Survivor Series 2006)

Only a handful of Survivor Series teams can boast a clean sweep. Eliminating all your opponents whilst avoiding any yourself is an awe-inspiring feat. The most famous of which was in 2006 when Team DX defeated Team RKO soundly.

Team DX was comprised of the five most popular men on the roster. The crowd was behind them, and there wasn’t a point when we thought that RKO would prevail. The eliminations began within seconds of the first bell and continued at a rapid pace until the end. It was utter domination from Team DX.

The Rock, The Undertaker, Kane, The Big Show & Chris Jericho (Team WWE, Survivor Series 2001)

Survivor Series in 2001 was the culmination of a nearly year-long program of WCW’s invasion. WWE was poised to rid itself of WCW once and for all and paraded out the biggest team of wrestlers that they could.

Kane, The Undertaker, The Rock, The Big Show, and Chris Jericho represented the biggest stars of the Attitude Era. Outside of Steve Austin, there were no bigger names for the company, and they gave WWE its best shot to emerge victorious. They were the men you wanted with your promotion on the line, and WWE is around because of their efforts.

Shawn Michaels, Bubba Ray Dudley, D-von Dudley, Booker T & Rob Van Dam (Team Austin, Survivor Series 2003)

It’s not very often that a team winds up on the losing end and still walks away the winners. It’s hard to outshine the winning team in a match, but that’s exactly what Team Austin did at the 2003 Survivor Series.

This was the ultimate babyface team, and they started working from behind. As each member was eliminated, the sympathy for the faces grew. It was a heroic uphill climb that ended with one of Shawn Michaels’ greatest performances. When HBK was pinned, you could feel the crowd’s heart breaking. It was a memorable underdog performance from five of the best.

Kevin Owens, Chris Jericho, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins & Braun Strowman (Team RAW, Survivor Series 2016)

The first year of the hard brand split saw WWE promoting RAW versus SmackDown at Survivor Series. It was the battle of the brands, and while they ended up on the losing side, Team Raw assembled an impressive team.

The men on Team Raw combined to give us the biggest stars of the era. All five men are future Hall of Famers, with Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, and Roman Reigns main eventing shows to this day. The influence they had on not just Raw, but the WWE. All were, or would become, World Champions, a feat not many teams can brag about.

Hulk Hogan, Ax, Smash & Jake Roberts (The Hulkamaniacs, Survivor Series 1989)

During the first few years of Survivor Series, WWE only promoted the titular matches for the event. The biggest stars and most interesting combinations of wrestlers were paraded out for the world to get excited over. Of them, one of the best was the pairing that comprised the Hulkamaniacs at Survivor Series 1989.

Hulk Hogan, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, and Demolition were the most over stars in WWE. They represented all that was great about babyfaces during the Golden Era. They worked well together as a team and were the highlight over the heel team that stood across from them. The Hulkamaniacs were the biggest names on the biggest team.

Rhea Ripley, Toni Storm, Bianca Belair, Candice LeRae & Io Shirai (Team NXT, Survivor Series 2019)

Going into the 2019 Survivor Series, WWE added another wrinkle to their team battle by including a third brand. Bringing NXT in was a smart move by WWE, and one that allowed for the formation of a fantastic NXT team.

Looking at this team nowadays, one would not flinch at their greatness. Each woman has grown into an incredible performer, but they were not as exposed as they are now. They were a cohesive unit of NXT’s best women and didn’t look out of place against the main roster stars. In fact, they surpassed all other women in the match, pulling off a big upset in the process. It was a very successful first foray into Survivor Series for NXT.

Shawn Michaels, Diesel, Jeff Jarrett, Owen Hart & Jim Neidhart (The Teamsters, Survivor Series 1994)

1994 was still in the swing of loaded Survivor Series matches on the card, so it’s hard to imagine a grouping of the best heels in the company on one team. That’s exactly what we got with the Teamsters when HBK, Diesel, Jeff Jarrett, Owen Hart & Jim Neidhart joined forces.

A team that represented all levels of heels within World Wrestling Entertainment. There was no other team that came close to the star power that filled the ring when these five men stepped through the ropes.

The Teamsters ultimately came out on the losing end but remained dominant throughout the match. Diesel was a wrecking crew, eliminating 3 of Razor Ramon’s team, putting the Bad Guy in a bad position. It was only when hubris intervened that The Teamsters were taken out, with the team chasing down Diesel and HBK. The Teamsters’ only downfall was themselves.

The Ultimate Warrior, Hawk, Animal & The Texas Tornado (The Warriors, Survivor Series 1990)

The first Survivor Series for the newly anointed WWE Champion, The Ultimate Warrior, was an important one. He was leading his team into battle and needed the right men to join him. He got that when he was flanked by the Legion of Doom and The Texas Tornado.

Three men who were just as flashy and crazy as the champ. Three men who were at the top of the babyface ladder and helped to turn in a great performance.

With the format of the PLE, The Ultimate Warrior was going to be the star of this team, but his supporting cast was just as good. Hawk and Animal gave us the brawling style that we loved, and their double-DQ makes sense. The Texas Tornado was fantastic in his 11 minutes and helped to set up a great ending for one of Survivor Series’ greatest teams.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on WWE Survivor Series: WarGames and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
