In this article, we’ll be taking a look back at some of those ridiculous bouts that somehow made it to a Survivor Series card.

The Royal Family Vs. Clowns Are Us (1994)

Hot take: the New Generation Era isn’t as bad as you may think. The main eventers, notably Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels, produced several classics against several different opponents. Names like Razor Ramon or Owen Hart kept the Intercontinental Championship relevant during those times. The 1-2-3 Kid made sure fans had an underdog to root for.

But then there was childish stuff like this Survivor Series elimination match that no one can defend. Jerry Lawler teamed with three little people (Cheesy, Queasy, and Sleazy…) to face Doink the Clown and three little people (Dink, Pink, and Wink…) in a bout that somehow lasted 16 looooong minutes from bell to bell.

Stone Cold Steve Austin Vs. Triple H (2000)

25 years ago today Stone Cold Steve Austin dropped Triple H with a forklift
byu/ElliotElectricity inAttitudeEra

While The Royal Family vs. Clowns Are Us made this list because of how ridiculous it was, this match is here for entirely different reasons. Stone Cold was written off TV at Survivor Series 1999 when he was run down by a car in the parking lot. When fans found out Rikishi did it (for The Rock!), they didn’t buy it. Thus, Triple H was added to the story as it was revealed that Rikishi ran over Stone Cold under The Game’s orders.

The two met in a No DQ Match in the main event of Survivor Series 2000, one year after the accident that sidelined The Texas Rattlesnake. The match was ruled a no-contest when Austin trapped Triple H inside a car, picked it up with a forklift… and dropped it! That’s right, Austin and Triple H literally tried to kill each other several times on TV. Needless to say, WWE doesn’t want its fans to rewatch the main event of Survivor Series 2000 anytime soon!

Kane Vs. Edge (2010)

Ten years later, WWE presented another feud that fans couldn’t connect with. Kane, fresh off three consecutive PPV wins over The Undertaker, started feuding with Edge. The Rated-R Superstar, the babyface in this story, played mind games with The Big Red Monster by kidnapping his father, Paul Bearer, and attacking him week after week.

The storytelling was beyond awful, but at least Kane and Edge could still put on a good match at Survivor Series, right? Right!? No… The fans in attendance didn’t know who to support during this World Heavyweight Championship matchup, resulting in an awkward match. In the end, Edge speared Kane and covered him to win the champi…

Who are we kidding? That would be way too normal for this nonsensical feud! Edge did indeed deliver the Spear to Kane. However, as Edge went for the cover, he (for whatever reason) fell on his back, and the referee counted both men’s shoulders down. What a mess.

True Divas Vs. Total Divas (2013)

Nowadays, WWE takes women’s wrestling seriously and presents its female talent as true stars. In this day and age, AJ Lee is respected by the fanbase for her contributions during the awful “Divas” era and for always standing up against the cast of Total Divas.

Back in 2013, though, AJ was the heel during her battles with the reality TV stars. That mentality alone is enough to make WWE want you to forget about this match, but somehow things got even worse once the bell rang.

Fourteen women participated in this match. Twelve were eliminated, all by pinfall or submission. Eleven minutes was the time it got. Three short minutes after the opening bell rang, three Divas had already been eliminated – including former Divas Champion Alicia Fox. This traditional Survivor Series elimination tag match was a joke and represented everything that was wrong with women’s wrestling at the time.

AJ Lee Vs. Nikki Bella (2014)

If the aforementioned match showed how little WWE cared about the Divas division, the company proved they could sink even lower the following year. The Bella Twins were involved in a controversial storyline that saw Nikki Bella turn on her sister at SummerSlam.

Nikki and Brie said horrible things about one another for months leading up to a match between them at Hell in a Cell. Brie lost and, according to the pre-match stipulation, was forced to manage her sister for a month.

Nikki became the number one contender for AJ Lee’s Divas Championship at Survivor Series. In what was Brie’s last major match as Nikki’s assistant, she shockingly planted a kiss on AJ – in a callback to WrestleMania 28 – and Nikki became the new champion in less than a minute.

The Bella Twins got back together from that point on, like nothing had ever happened. None of this made sense within the story being told, and it remains one of WWE’s most embarrassing storylines in recent memory.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on WWE Survivor Series: WarGames and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
