It was the boom period for the company, during which it transitioned from regional to international promotion. A transition that no one could have predicted and one that brought millions of fans to their PLEs.

The biggest driving force behind WWE’s Golden Era was its PLEs. These shows drew a huge audience and featured the greatest collection of wrestlers the world has ever seen. They competed in some of the top main events in company history.

However, as fondly as the era is looked upon, there are still a large number of PLE main events that failed to live up to expectations. It’s a 50/50 shot as to whether these main events hit or fall to the wayside. Below are examples of the best and worst PLE main events from WWE’s Golden Era.

Best: WrestleMania: Hulk Hogan & Mr. T vs Roddy Piper & Paul Orndorff

Not every match on this list is going to include great wrestling. Some will make it on because of their historical importance to World Wrestling Entertainment. This tag team match fits that mold perfectly. In fact, it could be argued that this is THE most important main event in WWE history.

The inaugural WrestleMania needed to cap its night off with a big-time match, and this was it. Hulk Hogan was shining bright, Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff were the perfect heel tandem, and the inclusion of A-lister Mr. T was perfect. It was a match that had all the bells and whistles to draw the eyes of the world. This was the main event of the main events, making WWE a household name.

Photo Credit: By Unknown author – Pro Wrestling Illustrated, May 1986, Public Domain,

Worst: WrestleMania IV: Randy Savage vs Ted DiBiase

WWE’s attempt at a one-night tournament to crown a new WWE Champion sounded like a great idea on paper. Unfortunately, the execution was flawed, and the whole night was a flop. Especially a main event that should have been a crowning moment.

The focus of this main event should have been on Savage and DiBiase, but they took a back seat to Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant. The wrestling showcase, which it should have been, was replaced by outside interference and shoddy booking. Even the finish has the Macho Man going over with the help of Hulk Hogan. WWE was not exactly making its new champion look very strong as the show ended.

Best: Royal Rumble 1992: Royal Rumble Match

The Royal Rumble match has a long history in WWE, but it is very rarely mentioned in the same breath as other great main events. A 30-man match is difficult to book and keep entertaining for the full hour, but when it works, boy, does it work. Take, for example, the 1992 Royal Rumble.

The WWE Championship being on the line was a huge selling point for the match, but it was the booking that made it great. From start to finish, some great stories were being told. Ric Flair’s hour-long battle was a great story. The fact that so many future Hall of Famers competed in this match added another layer of awesomeness. Then there was the crowd turning on Hulk Hogan as he was eliminated, which capped off the night. There were so many perfectly executed moving parts to this match that one has to stand up and applaud.

Worst: SummerSlam 1989: Hulk Hogan & Brutus Beefcake vs Randy Savage & Zeus

We are deep into WWE pushing Hulk Hogan over every once else territory in 1989. Fresh off “the success” of No Holds Barred, WWE decided to put actor Tiny Lister in a match with 3 professional wrestlers. What followed was a match that wouldn’t have been fun on the house show circuit.

One has to feel for Randy Savage here, as he was the only great wrestler of the bunch. Even he couldn’t save the plodding tag team match that we saw here. Nothing about the action was exciting, and it didn’t carry the big-match feel that it should have. “Zeus” looked awful and had no business being in the match. This was a match that didn’t work, which was created to promote a movie no one liked.

Best: WrestleMania VI: Hulk Hogan vs The Ultimate Warrior

This was a meeting of the two biggest stars of the Golden Era. Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior got the lion’s share of cheers from the crowd, and it was unthinkable when they were paired together. Having two babyfaces go to battle was not a common occurrence, and the audience was split. It was a battle worthy of the WrestleMania main event.

What made this match so special was the fact that it was the best of either man’s career. Neither was known for their wrestling acumen, but WrestleMania was the night where they bucked that trend. Both men turned in a tremendous performance, both physically and in telling a great story. There was nothing that they could do wrong, and it included a great passing of the torch finish that had the Toronto crowd roaring.

Worst: WrestleMania VIII: Hulk Hogan vs Sid Justice

The main event scene, in the early part of 1992, was a hot mess. Rumors were flying around that Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan were going to clash for the WWE Championship. For many reasons, WWE pivoted at the last minute, and we were given the dumpster fire that was Hulk Hogan and Sid Justice.

It’s believed that Hogan lobbied to get this match in the main event slot, and it can be assured that WWE regretted it. There was nothing great about this match. From the slow pacing to the lack of crowd reaction and a massively botched finish, there was nothing that screamed PLE main event. The Ultimate Warrior’s surprise run-in was a great moment, but one that took the thunder from everything that took place before it.

Best: WrestleMania III: Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant

WrestleMania III was a show that needed a huge main event. WWE needed the biggest draw they could to pack the Silverdome. For it, they charged their two biggest stars, Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant, to bring in the fans. They did, and WWE was able to set, at the time, an indoor attendance record. While disputed, yes, the number of people they jammed into Pontiac was a marvel.

Photo Credit: By John McKeon – Flickr, CC BY-SA 2.0,

Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant’s match was never going to blow purists out of the water. Andre was well past his prime, and Hogan wasn’t that type of worker. This was a story-heavy match featuring an Irresistible Force and an Immovable Object. A story that was a true passing of the torch moment when Hulk Hogan toppled Andre the Giant.

Worst: Survivor Series 1991: Legion of Doom & The Big Bossman vs The Natural Disasters & I.R.S.

There was much working against this confusing main event that closed the Survivor Series. It was a great match on paper, but one that shouldn’t have been closing out the show. It had the misfortune of having to follow the shocking events that surrounded the WWE Championship match between Hulk Hogan and The Undertaker. The match that should have closed the show was pushed to the middle of the card.

By the time we moved towards the main event, the fans had been emotionally spent, and the crowd was listless. No one cared much for this 6-man tag team match, and it should have at least carried the traditional Survivor Series match format.

This was the most underwhelming match of the night. Survivor Series has a great opener, a fun tag match, and then the WWE Championship contest. The main event of the night had an odd man out situation and was the most confusing match of the night.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WikiMedia Creative Commons – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on Golden Era WWE and other news stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
