As always, whenever a classic WWE PLE is coming up, fans love to go back and rewatch previous editions of said event. Survivor Series is definitely a fan favorite, having a rich history that dates all the way back to 1987.

RELATED: Every WWE Survivor Series PLE/PPV Of The 2000s Ranked

In this article, we’ll take a look back at Survivor Series 2015 – a show that celebrated The Undertaker’s 25th anniversary as a WWE star, and featured a tournament for the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Championship after the former champion, Seth Rollins, suffered a nasty injury in Dublin. As crazy as it sounds, it’s already been a full decade since that all happened, so now is the perfect time to go back and rewatch Survivor Series 2015.

We’ll start by addressing the WWE Title picture, particularly some of the most notable tournament matches that happened on television, before moving on to a recap of the actual PPV itself. Enjoy!

WWE Survivor Series 2015 – The Build

The build to Survivor Series 2015 began in the final minutes of the previous PPV, Hell in a Cell. Moments after the end of the main event, which saw Brock Lesnar beat The Undertaker in a superb Hell in a Cell Match, The Wyatt Family came out to attack The Undertaker before carrying The Deadman out of the ring.

Undertaker missed the next night’s Raw to sell the beatdown, but the story continued as Kane – one night after losing a WWE Championship match to Seth Rollins at Hell in a Cell – came out to confront The Wyatts, only to be attacked and carried out of the ring as well. The Brothers of Destruction would eventually come back a couple of weeks later, looking for revenge on The Wyatts, and a tag team match was booked for Survivor Series.

The October 26 episode of Monday Night Raw kicked off with The Authority announcing Seth Rollins would be defending his title in the main event of Survivor Series against the winner of a “mini-tournament” featuring eight wrestlers who’d won their matches at Hell in a Cell. The competition would start with four singles matches, and the winners would then compete in a Fatal Four Way Match to determine the new number one contender.

Roman Reigns (with a win over Kofi Kingston in the opener), Intercontinental Champion Kevin Owens (saw off Cesaro next), new United States Champion Alberto Del Rio (defeated Neville), and Dolph Ziggler (beat Big E in the last qualifier) advanced to the Fatal Four Way Match, which The Big Dog won.

Roman Reigns was now the number one contender, and according to reports, Reigns was actually going to beat Rollins at Survivor Series to win his first world title. However, fate had a different idea…

Seth Rollins’ Injury Forced WWE To Change Their Plans

Unfortunately, Rollins injured his knee the following week during a title defense against Kane in Dublin, Ireland. The member of The Authority was forced to vacate his championship, and WWE had to quickly come up with a new main event for Survivor Series. The solution? A 16-man tournament began on the very next edition of Raw.

The Final Four (semi-finals + final) would take place at the pay-per-view itself, and the winner of the tournament would become the brand new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

As the original number one contender, Roman Reigns was obviously the odds-on favorite to win the tournament. WWE teased a Roman Reigns heel turn on the November 9 Raw, when Triple H put the vacant championship belt on The Big Dog’s shoulder and sucked up to him, but Reigns wasn’t having it. Reigns was going to do things the hard way and earn the title.

Expectations were high after this segment, since a lot of fans rejected Reigns’ babyface push and were hoping the creative team could come up with a satisfying ending. Was Reigns going to swerve us and become the ‘Corporate Champion’ à la The Rock at Survivor Series 1998? Was someone else – probably Dean Ambrose, Reigns’ former The Shield teammate – going to screw Reigns out of the belt instead?

There were two (less interesting) scenarios:

a) Roman Reigns could simply win the tournament as a babyface and become the new champion. That outcome seemed way too predictable/boring to be true, but the fact is, Roman Reigns was being pushed to the moon whether fans liked it or not, and it could very well happen.

b) Sheamus had the Money in the Bank briefcase and could cash it in, but his booking at the time was so poor (he’d lost at the Hell in a Cell pre-show!) that no one could see Sheamus winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at this particular time.

WWE World Heavyweight Championship Tournament

First Round

Match

Winner

Show

Date

Time

Roman Reigns vs. The Big Show

Roman Reigns

WWE Raw

November 9, 2015

11:50

Kevin Owens vs. Titus O’Neil

Kevin Owens

WWE Raw

November 9, 2015

7:11

The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler

Dolph Ziggler

WWE Raw

November 9, 2015

5:01

Sheamus vs. Cesaro

Cesaro

WWE Raw

November 9, 2015

15:30

Dean Ambrose vs. Tyler Breeze

Dean Ambrose

WWE Raw

November 9, 2015

11:05

Neville vs. King Barrett

Neville

WWE SmackDown

November 12, 2015

14:10

Ryback vs. Kalisto

Kalisto

WWE SmackDown

November 12, 2015

12:00

Alberto Del Rio vs. Stardust

Alberto Del Rio

WWE SmackDown

November 12, 2015

9:04

Both the odds-on favorite (Reigns) and the undisputed fan favorite (Ambrose) won their first-round matches, as everyone expected. As good and exciting as Neville was, there was no doubt about this result. After all, Neville found himself competing in undercard matches against the likes of Bo Dallas, King Barrett, Stardust, and The Ascension week after week, while KO was already the Intercontinental Champion and had even defeated John Cena in his first main roster match.

Next, Dean Ambrose qualified by beating Dolph Ziggler in an entertaining 16-minute contest. This was another result that everyone saw coming a mile ahead, since Ambrose was one of the favorites in the whole tournament while Ziggler had already become that respected veteran whose job was to elevate others.

The best match of the tournament, at least in one man’s opinion, was the quarter-final clash between Roman Reigns and Cesaro. Everyone knew Reigns was going to win, but you could tell fans legitimately thought Cesaro had a chance due to how phenomenal their match was and how believable some of the nearfalls were.

Finally, Kalisto faced Alberto Del Rio. The returning Del Rio was the favorite, but maybe Kalisto could do it again! Unfortunately, they had a pretty basic TV match with the former world champion dominating most of the bout before predictably eliminating Kalisto.

The stage was set: United States Champion Alberto Del Rio would face Roman Reigns while Dean Ambrose would meet the Intercontinental Champion Kevin Owens. The winners would then wrestle for the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of Survivor Series. The returning Goldust joined forces with Neville, Titus O’Neil and fellow Attitude Era stars The Dudley Boyz to take on – and defeat – the fivesome of Stardust, The Ascension, The Miz and Bo Dallas.

Roman Reigns Vs. Alberto Del Rio

WWE decided to kick off Survivor Series 2015 with both tournament semi-final bouts, which was the right move. Roman Reigns and Alberto Del Rio opened the show with a solid contest. Reigns looked dominant throughout, but the experienced Del Rio knew exactly how to slow down The Big Dog. At one point Reigns missed a big charge in the corner, ramming his own shoulder into the turnbuckle.

As one would expect, Del Rio went after that injured shoulder/arm like a shark smelling blood. Reigns sold the pain beautifully while fighting from underneath, adding some much-needed drama to an extremely predictable match. Roman blocked Alberto’s Cross Armbreaker submission twice before finally putting the United States Champion down and out with a big Spear.

Dean Ambrose Vs. Kevin Owens

The second semi-final matchup saw Intercontinental Champion Kevin Owens take on Dean Ambrose, which ended up being even better than Reigns vs Del Rio. Owens and Ambrose made the most of the 11 minutes they got from bell to bell, delivering an entertaining back-and-forth bout.

Owens slammed Ambrose onto the announce table near the end, and it felt like KO had the upper hand. He went for the Pop-Up Powerbomb back inside the ring, but Ambrose managed to turn the move into a hurricanrana before putting Owens away with Dirty Deeds.

Ryback, The Usos & The Lucha Dragons Vs. The New Day, Sheamus & King Barrett

Now that we knew what the main event was going to be, it was time to let the show breathe. Thus, there was a traditional Survivor Series elimination tag match up next. The fact that the participants weren’t even announced before the pay-per-view shows just how important it was!

That year’s King of the Ring winner King Barrett was the first to hit the showers after being pinned by Sin Cara. The New Day then worked together to eliminate Jimmy Uso; just a few seconds later, Sheamus tagged himself in and eliminated Sin Cara to give the heels the numbers advantage.

It didn’t last long though, with Jey Uso eliminating Big E less than a minute later. Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods decided to walk away from the match as well, leaving Sheamus alone against Jey Uso, Kalisto and Ryback. The latter finished the job moments later by hitting Shell Shocked on Mr. Money in the Bank, who ate yet another loss.

Charlotte Vs. Paige

The soon-to-be-retired Divas Championship was on the line at Survivor Series as Charlotte defended against Paige. This feud is mostly remembered because of that infamous segment that saw Paige talk about Charlotte’s late brother, Reid Flair, on the go-home edition of Raw.

The Atlanta crowd just didn’t care about this story at all no matter how hard both women worked in the ring. While no one can really blame the fans, especially after what happened the previous Monday, the in-ring action wasn’t bad at all. In the end, Charlotte retained the title after forcing Paige to tap out to her Figure Eight Leglock.

Dolph Ziggler Vs. Tyler Breeze

Tyler Breeze made his WWE main roster debut on the October 22 SmackDown, interrupting Dolph Ziggler on “Miz TV” before attacking The Show-Off. Breeze continued to attack and distract Ziggler for weeks on television. Ziggler finally retaliated on the November 19 episode of SmackDown, which led to a match at Survivor Series.

Tyler Breeze might’ve picked up the win over a former World Heavyweight Champion in his first WWE PPV match, but this was yet another forgettable midcard match on this show. Just a six-minute match that no one remembered the next day. It probably would’ve been a lot better if it happened on Raw or SmackDown.

The Brothers Of Destruction Vs. The Wyatt Family

WWE promoted Survivor Series 2015 as a celebration of The Undertaker’s 25 years in WWE. When you look at things that way, it’s hard to say this tag team match didn’t deliver. The fans got to see an epic entrance, The Brothers of Destruction hit all their big moves and won. Those who watched Survivor Series 2015 for nostalgia probably loved it.

However, looking back a decade later, this match symbolizes WWE’s struggle to elevate new stars. The Wyatt Family had plenty of history with both Kane and The Undertaker, and this had the potential to be far more than a glorified house show tag team match – which is exactly what it was.

Roman Reigns Vs.
