The pair had a memorable rivalry in the 90s and 2000s, as well as tag team action. They shared a brother-like chemistry onscreen that platformed lucha libre in the United States, normalizing the greatness of its pro wrestling genre.

Guerrero, as a singles competitor, had such glory and success in his final years to provide moments in wrestling that would live forever. In his wake, he left an embarrassment of dream matches that can never come to fruition. As time marches on, this fact continues to grow, a testament to how sensational a wrestler he was.

His legacy continues to be felt in the industry, long after his absence. Not many can say that, but Guerrero’s contributions leave him standing tall among the greats who’ve come and gone. But what if he had that golden chance to lace up his boots against some of today’s most compelling and entertaining athletes in wrestling and sports entertainment?

I love making lists, and I’ve been itching to share who I think would have money matches with the all-time great. Here are five of my Eddie Guerrero dream matches.

Sting versus Eddie Guerrero

The Icon. The Stinger. The man they call Sting. While I would’ve loved to see Sting take on Eddie in his Surfer guise, the moves to be made in the black and white Crow Sting would have left fans talking for decades. Should Sting have debuted in the Ruthless Aggression Era of WWE, or Eddie Guerrero set foot in the Impact Zone, they would have been great foils to one another.

Sting’s unflinching nature would’ve contrasted with Eddie’s sneaky moves, and his cunning would’ve left Latino Heat cooling in panic, outwitting the famous chair spots where he throws it and lies down on the mat. Seriously, Eddie would’ve made a great Penguin to Sting’s Batman.

Like a relentless force of nature, Sting would come for the greed and avarice in Eddie’s character at the time, making for a great SummerSlam or Unbreakable match. This is a dream match that begs for a world championship to make a gripping match.

Dominik Mysterio versus Eddie Guerrero

Yes, I went for the easy one. So what?

Young Mysterio is highly reminiscent of Eddie’s 2000s look. He even copied the storyline Eddie Guerrero shared with Chyna, as seen in the early Judgment Day saga with Rhea Ripley. Moreover, Dominik has excelled in the years after a rocky, rocky start. Starting as a bland tag team babyface with father Rey, Dom’s turn to the dark side allowed him to find a personality away from lucha royalty.

Growing his hair out, adopting a mustache, wearing black, purple, and white, and dripping in legions of tattoos, Dominik became something else, something more expressive of who he is away from his kayfabe deadbeat dad, Rey Mysterio. Coupled with an improved quality in work rate, he’s been a reliable worker for newer or returning talent.

Embed from Getty Images
It’s so easy to boo Dominik. I’m not even sure Eddie at his heeliest would have been able to gather such volatile outcry from attending fans. This would be a simple yet entertaining angle to book. I can picture Guerrero complaining, “I’m not even your real dad!” But moreover, with all the laughs, they could explore some deeply personal areas in promos and matches. Since Eddie was captivating on the mic, the chemistry would have been there.

Penta versus Eddie Guerrero

WWE has utterly mishandled Penta after a very hot start. Having spent so much time on AEW delivering thrilling tag team action with Lucha Brother Rey Fenix, sensational bouts in lucha promotions, and a key fixture in Lucha Underground, it’s feasible he would’ve quickly slotted into the main event picture and/or the upper mid-card. Since that area is predominantly occupied with huge stars, it’s hard to tell when that time will come—unless he turns heel.

Penta versus Eddie Guerrero is a dream match that I have a specific place in mind: the aforementioned Lucha Underground. The arm-breaking merchant of Vampiro, Penta, was a menace. Boasting matches with the likes of Prince Puma, King Cuerno, Mil Muertes, Reklusa, and the handicap against Hitokiri, Doku, and Yurei of the Black Lotus Triad.

Eddie Guerrero in Lucha Underground would’ve been fantastic anyway you spin it. Specifically, I could see something special with Penta. Given Lucha Underground’s cinematic style, the image of a seasoned veteran like Eddie only losing some steps in age against a threat like Penta could evoke structures found in slasher films or chase/survival stories. Avoiding arm injuries in a bid to withstand rather than to overcome would’ve made his iconic and heroic presence as a legend to sell the utter terror of Penta.

Hiroshi Tanahashi versus Eddie Guerrero

Soon to retire, The Ace in his prime against Eddie Guerrero is yet another popular dream match. Credited with saving NJPW, like how Eddie was cited as a reason for lucha libre’s popularity in the USA, a singles match between the two is a no-brainer. Both have contributed to the overall history of pro wrestling.

Eddie was no stranger to strong style, either, given his time in NJPW as the second Black Tiger in the 1990s and a subsequent run as himself in 2002. Strong Style provided more depth in his arsenal, as seen by his feuds with Rey Mysterio in WCW and WWE.

The ideal place for this dream match would’ve been the late 2000s to mid-2010s NJPW. Starting from a G1 match, it could branch off into a series of matches for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. There are actually more dream matches that would’ve spiraled from this. And still, I place Tanahashi at the top of all of them.

Embed from Getty Images
Bringing his Halloween Havoc 1997 best, Latino Heat and The Ace’s dynamics hold an air of classic wrestling storytelling with satisfying substance. Guerrero, being a foreign talent, would’ve brought a little sizzle to NJPW’s recent boom period. Throw Eddie into the Bullet Club or Los Ingobernables de Japon for this, and I’m salivating.

Kenny Omega versus Eddie Guerrero

Eddie Guerrero was a workhorse. He could bring bloody brawls to JBL, withstand the monstrosity of Brock Lesnar, and tussle in parking lots with John Cena. Against Omega, who has utterly transformed professional wrestling, I’d imagine that Eddie Guerro would’ve had a classic. Emotionally transcendent.

A simple match between the two could tell the story needed without any fluff heading into it. Two of wrestling’s big names are battling it out for the bragging rights of the best of the best. Guerrero’s goal of proving he could still hang with even the industry’s freshest stars is ample reason for him. Kenny, meanwhile, seeks to add a name of such a monumental landmark of the industry to his belt.

Embed from Getty Images

What entices me is the creativity the two would indulge in. The pair would likely call back to Eddie’s Black Tiger days. They’d pay tribute to the cruiserweights that paved the way for wrestlers like Kenny. The story of how Eddie would try to escape Omega’s fearsome One-Winged Angel immediately comes to mind. Omega’s an imaginative wrestler, always keen to make matches look different from others while calling back to specific moments. Eddie knew how to subvert expectations and slip into any role.

Thank you, Eddie

Embed from Getty Images

The monument of his legend exists in how fans can list Eddie Guerrero’s dream matches.
