Sadly, Latino Heat passed away 20 years ago on November 13, 2005, at just 38. The news shook the wrestling world to its core, with Eddie’s loved ones, colleagues, and fans worldwide mourning his loss. His loss is still felt today. Eddie was in the prime of his wrestling career, and the former WWE Champion had more to give.

Furthermore, Eddie’s body of work remains relevant, as many wrestlers were fans of his, notably Mercedes Mone, who has worn his gear in the past. Guerrero built a legacy in WWE, and he had success in WCW and ECW before joining WWE. He won championships in all three promotions.

Latino Heat featured in some outstanding wrestling matches, showcasing technical wrestling at the highest order. Guerrero’s catalog of high-profile matches was endless. Guerrero thrived whether he was a babyface or a heel. Eddie’s accolades speak for themselves: he won the WWE Championship once, the Intercontinental Championship twice, the WWE United States Championship once, the European Championship twice, and the WWE Tag Team Championship four times with three different partners.

He also captured gold in WCW and ECW. We will revisit just five of the WWE Hall of Famer’s greatest matches throughout his legendary career during his runs in WWE and WCW.

5. Eddie Guerrero Vs. Rob Van Dam – WWE Raw (5/27/02)

Eddie Guerrero returned to WWE on the April 1, 2002 edition of Raw, wasting no time in beginning a rivalry with the Intercontinental Champion Rob Van Dam. Eddie’s rivalry with RVD over the WWE Intercontinental Championship in spring 2002 was fascinating.

Both men relied on the Frog Splash as their finisher. Nevertheless, Latino Heat defeated RVD at Backlash 2002, kickstarting his second Intercontinental Championship reign within three weeks of his return to the company.

RVD attempted to regain the Intercontinental Championship from Eddie at Insurrextion 2002 and Judgment Day 2002 but came up short both times, albeit a DQ finish at Insurrextion. Nonetheless, the Intercontinental Championship is a workhorse title, and both men were workhorses. Both had aerial agility, and their ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship on the May 27, 2002 edition of Raw was superb.

Unsurprisingly, this was an elite-level pay-per-view quality encounter, and they hit a home run in an excellent ladder match. A fan thought it was a good idea to interfere by attempting to push Eddie off the ladder. Nonetheless, that didn’t deter Eddie from being a professional and producing magic with RVD. Eddie didn’t make it easy for RVD, and both took some brutal bumps.

Ultimately, Eddie fell victim to being pushed off the ladder by RVD, and he was helpless to halt RVD from recapturing the Intercontinental Championship in one of the best ladder matches in the history of Raw.

4. Eddie Guerrero Vs. Edge – WWE SmackDown (9/26/02)

The SmackDown Six was one of the best things about the brand split and SmackDown towards the backend of 2002. Eddie Guerrero and Edge were a third of the SmackDown Six. This was their grudge match on SmackDown’s September 26, 2002 taping. Edge defeated Eddie at SummerSlam 2002, and Eddie returned the favor at Unforgiven 2002.

Their No Disqualification match is one of the most incredible contests in SmackDown history. The atmosphere was electric with fans heavily invested in their fast-paced bout.

Edge’s well-documented neck troubles came to a head in this No Disqualification match. Edge took a brutal bump off the ladder. Unfortunately, the serious neck issues led to Edge’s retirement in 2011. Nevertheless, Edge and Eddie’s chemistry was brilliant, and fans were treated to memorable matches between the two future world champions.

Nonetheless, Eddie executed a sitout powerbomb off the ladder with Edge writhing in pain. Their match was fantastic, but Edge weathered the storm, and he nailed Eddie with a vicious Edgecution off the top of the ladder, securing the all-important victory.

3. Eddie Guerrero Vs. Kurt Angle – WWE WrestleMania 20

Undoubtedly, Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle are two of the greatest in-ring technical wrestlers to lace up a pair of boots. The Olympic Gold Medalist defeated Big Show and John Cena in a triple threat match at No Way Out 2004, earning the right to become the number one contender for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 20.

Leading up to their upcoming WWE Championship match, Angle turned heel once again. He was the special guest referee in Eddie’s WWE Championship match with his nephew Chavo. Afterward, Angle brutalized Latino Heat, leaving Eddie in a pool of his own blood.

Eddie’s fourth WrestleMania appearance saw him walk into WrestleMania as a champion for the first time in his legendary career. Eddie and Angle’s WWE Championship match inside Madison Square Garden didn’t fail to disappoint. The fans were locked in and fascinated to see who’d get the bragging rights and depart New York as the WWE Champion.

Embed from Getty Images

A home run was hit in one of the all-time excellent WWE Championship matches taking place at WrestleMania. Their match was hard-hitting as expected, with Angle cinching in the Angle Lock several times.

The Ankle Lock has brought Angle joy several times, but he wishes that he hadn’t used it at WrestleMania. Eddie outsmarted the former four-time WWE Champion by purposely removing his boot, with Angle confused as Eddie caught Angle with a small package to retain the WWE Championship.

2. Eddie Guerrero Vs. Rey Mysterio – WCW Halloween Havoc 1997

The longstanding rivalry between Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio dates back to their WCW days. Eddie and Rey became tag team partners in 2005, and they held the WWE Tag Team Championship for a couple of months. However, their feud in 2005 with Eddie becoming a heel once again was one of Latino Heat’s final major rivalries before his untimely passing in November 2005.

Furthermore, Eddie and Rey have a plethora of iconic wrestling matches in their catalog, but their match at WCW Halloween Havoc 1997 was their best. The stakes were high as the WCW Cruiserweight Championship was on the line, as was Rey Mysterio’s mask. Mysterio’s unmasking would happen if he failed to win the Cruiserweight Championship.

Mysterio and Guerrero created magic at Halloween Havoc, with Mysterio looking to go 9-0 in matches with his mask on the line. Their chemistry was unrivaled, and it’s regarded as one of WCW’s best matches. You couldn’t take your eyes off their fast-paced battle.

The match lasted 14 minutes, but it was a prime example of quality over quantity. Mysterio’s counter was innovative with a superb Hurricanrana from the top rope, preserving his mask in the process. He became a two-time WCW Cruiserweight Champion.

1. Eddie Guerrero Vs. Brock Lesnar – WWE No Way Out 2004

The atmosphere at the Cow Palace was electric as the biggest match of Eddie Guerrero’s career, his WWE Championship bout with Brock Lesnar, headlined No Way Out 2004. Eddie’s nephew, Chavo Guerrero, won the WWE Cruiserweight Championship earlier on, and Eddie was looking to make it a clean sweep for the Guerreros.

Nevertheless, it says a lot that Eddie came out second as the challenger, since the challenger typically comes out first in a championship match. Unquestionably, the Next Big Thing had the size and strength advantage, and the three-time WWE Champion was comfortable in high-stakes matches.

The fans in attendance were desperate to see Guerrero dethrone Lesnar. The referee was knocked down, and Lesnar grabbed the WWE Championship in his clutches. However, in retaliation for causing his elimination from the 2004 Royal Rumble match, Goldberg speared Lesnar, planting the seeds for their upcoming WrestleMania 20 matchup.

Chants of Eddie reverberated around the arena, and Eddie was tantalizingly close to winning the WWE Championship. Lesnar found some strength to kick out. With the referee still unconscious, Eddie’s lying, cheating, and stealing tactics helped him attempt to nail Lesnar with the WWE Championship, but Lesnar stopped him in his tracks.

The defending WWE Champion attempted the F-5, but Eddie countered it, and Eddie planted Lesnar’s face into the WWE Championship. Eddie connected with the Frog Splash, and he did the unthinkable by winning the WWE Championship.

Wild scenes broke out with Eddie embracing his mother and brother, Mando, who appeared at ringside. Eddie’s WWE Championship victory was one of the most emotional title wins in WWE history. The atmosphere was deafening with the roof almost blown off the building.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WikiMedia Creative Commons – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on Eddie Guerrero and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
