Survivor Series is one of WWE’s “Big Four” events, with the first edition taking place in 1987. Furthermore, it’s arguably the weakest of the “Big Four” events behind WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and the Royal Rumble. Nevertheless, Survivor Series has been a staple on WWE’s premium live-event calendar, with memorable moments.

The 2000s held some iconic Survivor Series events with a plethora of shocking returns, memorable title changes, and a new gimmick match that became a household name in WWE. Traditional Survivor Series elimination matches dominated Survivor Series in the 2000s, and some world championship matches were excellent. Not all Survivor Series events in the 2000s were worth rewatching, but some are amongst the greatest PPVs in WWE history. We take a further look at every Survivor Series in the 2000s to see how they stack up against each other.

10 – Survivor Series 2006

The 2006 iteration of Survivor Series was a huge missfire for WWE. The WWE Women’s Championship match between Lita and Mickie James was Lita’s retirement match, and she aimed to follow in her biggest rival, Trish Stratus’ footsteps by retiring as the Women’s Champion. That failed to materialize, with Mickie ending Lita’s Women’s Championship reign. Cryme Tyme humiliated Lita and sent her into retirement. Mr. Kennedy and The Undertaker’s First Blood match was decent, with Kennedy registering a massive victory over the Phenom.

The World Tag Team Champions Randy Orton and Edge led Team Rated-RKO into battle with Team DX, and Team Rated-RKO were on the receiving end of a clean sweep. The WWE Champion John Cena’s team and the ECW Champion Big Show’s side squared off, with another babyface team victorious. Ultimately, the main event was underwhelming and predictable as “The Animal” Batista became a two-time World Heavyweight Champion, recapturing the title he never lost in the first place by ending King Booker’s reign.

9 – Survivor Series 2000

2000 was widely regarded as the best year in the Attitude Era. Despite WWE producing strong PPVs in the first year of the new millennium, the 2000 iteration of Survivor Series was disappointing. William Regal retained the European Championship against Hardcore Holly by disqualification, and the Radicalz prevailed in their four-on-four traditional Survivor Series elimination match against three D-Generation X alums alongside K-Kwik on the other side of the ring.

Ivory, representing the Right to Censor, saw off Lita to successfully continue her Women’s Championship reign, and it was a valiant effort from Lita as she wore the proverbial crimson mask.

Other notable results included The Rock beating Rikishi, and Kurt Angle ending a run of the WWE Championship, changing hands at six consecutive Survivor Series events by seeing off The Undertaker in The Undertaker’s decade-long appearance at Survivor Series. Steve Austin and Triple H’s No Disqualification match lasted 25 minutes, with the Texas Rattlesnake emerging from a forklift and dropping Triple H, who was stuck in a car, bringing the show to a close.

8 – Survivor Series 2008

The highlight of Survivor Series 2008 was John Cena returning to in-ring action for the first time in three months, challenging a red-hot Chris Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship. Cena had hometown support, with the event emanating from TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. Big Match John prevailed by winning the World Heavyweight Championship for the first time in his career.

The Undertaker and Big Show’s rivalry culminated with the Deadman defeating the World’s Largest Athlete in a Casket match. The WWE Women’s Champion, “The Glamazon,” Beth Phoenix, secured victory for Team Raw as the sole survivor by lastly seeing off Team SmackDown’s Maryse.

Furthermore, the triple threat match for Triple H’s WWE Championship was scheduled for the Game to defend the title against Vladimir Kozlov and Jeff Hardy. However, the Charismatic Enigma no-showed with “The Rated-R Superstar” Edge, shocking the world by replacing Hardy, and he clinched his third WWE Championship in one of the most iconic returns in Survivor Series history.

7 – Survivor Series 2004

Some underrated championship matches at Survivor Series 2004 often get lost in the shuffle. Spike Dudley retained the Cruiserweight Championship against former champions Rey Mysterio, Billy Kidman, and Chavo Guerrero in an entertaining opener. Christian failed to win the Intercontinental Championship for the fourth time, with Shelton Benjamin retaining the title in a remarkable bout.

Trish Stratus and Lita’s grudge match for the WWE Women’s Championship ended prematurely with Lita viciously assaulting Trish, leaving the reigning champion with a bloody nose.

The Undertaker contested one of the worst matches in his Survivor Series catalog against Heidenreich, who was not at the caliber to face The Undertaker. Another noteworthy result was that JBL successfully defended the WWE Championship against Booker T in an average bout.

Ultimately, the winner of the Team Triple H and Team Orton traditional Survivor Series elimination match gained control of Monday Night Raw for one month. That privilege went to Orton’s side with the Legend Killer becoming the sole survivor in a traditional Survivor Series match for the second year in succession at the World Heavyweight Champion Triple H’s expense.

6 – Survivor Series 2005

If you want to see how to do Team Raw vs. Team SmackDown right in a traditional Survivor Series elimination match, cast your mind back to Survivor Series 2005. The build-up was intense, and the match delivered.

SmackDown’s quintet comprised of Batista, Randy Orton, JBL, Bobby Lashley, and Rey Mysterio. They registered a victory over Raw’s Shawn Michaels, Kane, Big Show, Carlito, and Chris Masters, with Orton becoming the sole survivor for the third consecutive year. Undertaker had the last word as he returned and cleaned out Team SmackDown.

The undercard was fantastic, with Triple H defeating the Intercontinental Champion Ric Flair in a brutal non-title Last Man Standing match. Trish Stratus and Melina collided over the WWE Women’s Championship, and John Cena escaped with the WWE Championship in an excellent title defense against four-time WWE Champion Kurt Angle.

5 – Survivor Series 2009

The 2009 edition of Survivor Series featured world championship matches that were mirror images of each other, as both reigning world champions defended their titles in triple threat matches against tag team partners.

The Undertaker halted Chris Jericho and Big Show’s chances of becoming double champions as he retained the World Heavyweight Championship against the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions. John Cena, Triple H, and Shawn Michaels contested a high-quality triple threat match for the WWE Championship, with Cena inevitably retaining his title.

Former WWE Tag Team Champions Batista and Rey Mysterio were at loggerheads, with Batista continuing to have success in his newly minted heel run by demolishing the Master of the 619. Championship wins were not too distant a future for the likes of Sheamus and Drew McIntyre, who were victorious on Team Miz, and Team Mickie prevailed over Team McCool.

4 – Survivor Series 2003

Survivor Series 2003 didn’t disappoint, with several high-stakes matches on the card. The McMahons had contrasting results, as Shane McMahon came up short yet again against Kane in an Ambulance match. However, Mr. McMahon’s triumph over Undertaker in a Buried Alive match signaled the end of Undertaker’s three-year spell as the American Badass.

Other results included Molly Holly and Lita delivering a watchable WWE Women’s Championship match with Molly retaining her title, and The Bashams successfully defended the WWE Tag Team Championship.

The five-on-five traditional Survivor Series elimination match between Raw Co-GMs Eric Bischoff and Steve Austin resulted in Austin’s run as Co-GM being curtailed, with Randy Orton scoring the win for Bischoff’s team by lastly eliminating Shawn Michaels, all thanks to outside interference from his Evolution stablemate Batista. Speaking of Evolution, Triple H failed in his latest bid to bring the World Heavyweight Championship back to Evolution, with Goldberg retaining the gold in a lackluster main event.

3 – Survivor Series 2007

The two world championship matches at Survivor Series 2007 were the main attraction on the card, and both matches were hard-hitting affairs. The curtain-raiser featured CM Punk retaining the ECW Championship against John Morrison and The Miz in a triple threat match, which was historic as it was the first and only time that the ECW Championship was defended at Survivor Series.

The sole traditional Survivor Series elimination match saw Triple H’s team defeat Umaga’s side, despite the Cerebral Assassin’s team being at a disadvantage due to the handicap four-on-five format. Unsurprisingly, the world title matches were off the charts with Randy Orton besting Shawn Michaels to retain the WWE Championship.

Batista defeated The Undertaker in a Hell in a Cell match that knocked it out of the park with Edge disguised as a cameraman unveiling himself with the Ultimate Opportunist attacking Undertaker, leading to the Animal retaining the World Heavyweight Championship.

2 – Survivor Series 2001

The Invasion storyline reached its climax at Survivor Series 2001, and whilst this show is fondly remembered for the five-on-five traditional Survivor Series elimination match between Team WWE and the Alliance, the undercard was fantastic. Edge and Test clashed in the battle of Canadians, with Edge defeating Test, unifying the Intercontinental and WCW United States Championships in the process.

The Hardys and Dudleys rekindled their rivalry with the stakes high in a steel cage match, with the Dudleys getting one over on their rivals to unify the WWE and WCW Tag Team Championships. Trish Stratus won the WWE Women’s Championship for the first time in a six-pack challenge for the vacant title, and Team WWE capped off a breathtaking show by sending The Alliance out of business.

1 – Survivor Series 2002

The 2002 iteration of Survivor Series isn’t just the best Survivor Series of the decade; it’s arguably the greatest Survivor Series of all time. The card was stacked from top to bottom, and the barbaric Elimination Chamber made its debut. It wasn’t a good night to be a reigning champion, as every title match resulted in a new champion being crowned.

Victoria captured the Women’s Championship from Trish Stratus in a superb Hardcore match, and Los Guerreros won the WWE Tag Team Championship. Nevertheless, Big Show continued his love affair with Survivor Series as, for the second time in four years, he won the WWE Championship at the event, this time ending Brock Lesnar’s unbeaten run to capture the title.

The main event featured the first-ever Elimination Chamber match for Triple H’s World Heavyweight Championship with Shawn Michaels, Booker T, Rob Van Dam, Chris Jericho, and Kane as his challengers. The ending was spectacular as the Heartbreak Kid prevailed to secure his fourth and final world championship.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on WWE Survivor Series and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
