The match’s drama was heightened by a stipulation McIntyre added, which meant Rhodes would lose the championship if he were disqualified or counted out.

Going into the match, McIntyre aimed to deny Cody Rhodes any safety net. By including the disqualification and count-out clause, he removed the usual protection champions have in tightly contested matches. For Rhodes, a single misstep or moment of emotion could cost him dearly.

Hard-Hitting Action and Psychological Warfare

McIntyre combined psychological mind games with brute force. From the opening bell, he sought to push Rhodes to the edge and provoke a mistake. At one point, McIntyre threw the champion through the announcers’ desk, nearly winning by count-out. He relentlessly taunted Rhodes, attempting to force a disqualification. Despite the chaos, Rhodes remained calm and focused. Both men exchanged punishing blows, at times nearly on their knees from exhaustion.

Controversial Finish

As the match neared its climax, the referee was accidentally knocked down. Taking advantage of the distraction, Rhodes performed a DDT on McIntyre using the championship belt, a move unseen by the official. Once the referee recovered, Rhodes executed his finishing move, the Cross Rhodes, and secured the three-count to retain his title. While Rhodes was technically within the rules, his use of the championship belt during the move sparked debate among fans and analysts.

Future Implications and Fallout

The result has divided the WWE Universe. Many believe McIntyre was unfairly denied a victory, given the opportunity the stipulation provided him to seize the title. McIntyre left the ring visibly frustrated, openly blaming the referee and management for the perceived injustice.

For Cody Rhodes, the win reinforces his status as one of WWE’s toughest champions. However, the controversial manner of his victory may hint at a shift in his character, blurring the line between heroism and desperation and potentially signaling a more ruthless approach in his reign as champion.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on Cody Rhodes and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
