Through the years, Cena provided the WWE Universe with unforgettable matches and moments that will forever be ingrained in their minds, but he didn’t do it alone. John Cena has had some iconic dance partners to help build his unmatched legacy in the company, which begs the question: “Who is the greatest WWE rival of John Cena?”

We’re here to answer exactly that. We will list some names and plead their case as the definitive antithesis of the “Greatest of All-Time.” Now that you know what to expect, let’s run it down.

Honorable Mentions:

Brock Lesnar

“The Beast” brought out the absolute monster in John Cena during their series of matches. While their matches were always blockbuster and generated a ton of buzz, it’s almost always a one-sided mauling courtesy of the “Beast Incarnate,” regardless of whether it’s a win for Cena. Again, while highly entertaining, it’s not the absolute showdown the WWE Universe would expect from Cena’s greatest rivals.

AJ Styles

For a long time, a match between “The Franchise of WWE” John Cena and “Mr. TNA” AJ Styles was nothing but a pipedream for many fans. That was until Styles showed up at the 2015 Royal Rumble, reigniting the flame that fans had to see this match. Styles would’ve definitely been in the running, considering their amazing matches together, with their very recent one, WWE Crown Jewel Perth, being the absolute barn-burner that it was.

However, the men who will be included in this list had more of an impact on Cena’s career, not to say Styles didn’t, but it came a bit late in both men’s careers, considering they only had five matches spread across nine to 10 years. Don’t get us wrong, folks, those bouts were still era-defining, and that’s why Styles deserves an honorable mention.

The Rock

One of the best and most unique builds in WrestleMania history was possible because of John Cena and The Rock. One night removed from WrestleMania XVII, Rock and Cena sealed the deal, agreeing to a monster main event match one year in advance at WrestleMania XXVIII. When the time came, the “Once in a Lifetime” bout produced magic and was definitely a dream match most people thought they would never see.

Sure, it wasn’t “Once in a Lifetime,” considering they had a rematch the very next year, but The Rock versus John Cena definitely earns a shout for starpower alone.

Photo Credit: By Anton from USA – WWE House Show – Garrett Coliseum – 1/10/15, CC BY-SA 2.0,

JBL

In our humble opinion, John Bradshaw Layfield was one of the first competitors who helped John Cena get to a main event level. Bradshaw was a tag team specialist up to that point, reinventing himself to become JBL and WWE Champion in a matter of months back in 2004. JBL reigned supreme over those 10 months, and when the “time was now,” he provided a fantastic foil to the up-and-coming poster boy of WWE, standing in the way of his first WWE Championship.

Most don’t give JBL the flowers he deserved, considering he was a sort of catalyst in the meteoric rise of the “Never Seen 17,” and gave Cena his first actual test in the big-time.

Kevin Owens

Embed from Getty Images

Folks, it was quite the toss-up between JBL and Kevin Owens, but we decided to go with the “Prized Fighter” himself. “Why?” you may ask. The reason for Owens’ inclusion is that he was basically the breath of fresh air John Cena needed to secure his second career wind. What that means is K.O. revitalized an otherwise stale character that fans had grown weary of over the last five years up to that point.

Their rivalry came in the middle of Cena’s “U.S. Open Challenge” and Kevin’s run as NXT Champion. While Cena’s open challenges were great on their own, once Owens was in the equation, it gave John Cena a new edge, with even Cena’s repertoire of moves evolving to keep up with the relentless and unpredictable offense of Kevin Owens.

Their trilogy of matches defined the mid-2010s, with one of their best ones being a highly-regarded bout at WWE Money in the Bank 2015, and their initial one at the same year’s Elimination Chamber had fans salivating at seeing the main-eventer go up against the Indie scene’s finest.

To sum it up, Owens was the right opponent for a John Cena looking for another formidable challenge in an otherwise murky era of his career.

Kurt Angle

Embed from Getty Images

Suffice it to say, John Cena wouldn’t be the “Greatest of All-Time” without the “Wrestling Machine” Kurt Angle. If JBL was the first true test of Cena as a potential main event player, Angle was the measuring stick that Cena had to go up against to prove he actually belonged in the WWE.

We all know the scene, Angle asked what a young, generic wrestling gear-wearing Cena had that entitles him to stand across Kurt Angle in a WWE ring. Cena would exclaim “Ruthless Aggression” and smacked Angle across the face, creating the first significant moment in the legendary career of the “Never Seen 17.”

These men had seven matches together, with some of their more notable ones coming in the mid-2000s during Cena’s first go-around with the WWE Championship and being drafted to WWE Monday Night Raw in 2006. Before Angle’s retirement at WrestleMania 35, he even requested Cena as his final opponent so their rivalry would come full circle; unfortunately, it was not meant to be.

That said, Angle had an indelible mark on the budding career of John Cena, helping elevate and build him up to the superstar he would be for the next 20 years.

CM Punk

Embed from Getty Images

The 2010s kicked off with a rivalry that would define the decade: CM Punk versus John Cena. If you look at these two men, they could not be more different. One is the quintessential superstar that most companies would die for to have as the face of their brand. The other, an anti-establishment, walks to the beat of his own drum, tattoo-covered Punk rock kid (no pun intended) that most wouldn’t consider “fit” to be the “top guy in WWE.”

Those differences are what made the WWE rivalry between John Cena and CM Punk work. Cena was the company guy who put WWE on his back for the last five years, while Punk was the man who wanted to disrupt the status quo and prove that “guys like him” are far better than the cookie-cutter Ken dolls WWE was trying to push at the time.

Their chemistry together was unmatched, providing the WWE Universe with electric moments whenever they would come face-to-face. Cena was also present for the infamous “Pipe bomb” that would thrust Punk into the stratosphere and see him become one of the longest reigning WWE Champions of the modern era.

Punk also forced Cena’s hand most times, going toe-to-toe with him on the microphone and in the ring, creating classics such as their 2011 Money in the Bank spectacle in Chicago, as well as their 2013 match on WWE Raw that saw Punk drill Cena with a then-banned Piledriver.

Peeling back the curtains, Punk and Cena have a tremendous amount of respect for one another, with the “Second City Saint” even referring to John as his “wrestling soulmate.” The Cena and Punk feud during the period was basically that generation’s Rock and Austin, which tells you all you need to know, and why CM Punk deserves to be in this conversation.

Randy Orton

Embed from Getty Images

Out of all these fabled WWE names, Randy Orton stands above the rest as the guy who’s had the most matches with John Cena during the Cenation Leader’s career, with 21 matches. Orton and Cena know each other like the back of their hands, creating one of the most enduring WWE rivalries in history. It got to a point that fans were clamoring for a change as these two locked up in so many matches in two different decades.

In spite of the outrage, whenever Cena and Orton would lock horns, the WWE Universe knew they would be in for a heck of a show. These two were meant to “fight forever” to some degree, considering that they would be the two men who guided the WWE into the next two decades. When fans mention Cena versus Orton, two matches would come to mind: SummerSlam 2007, where a young Orton and Cena would kick off their legendary feud, as well as Bragging Rights 2009, where they had a jaw-dropping Iron Man Match.

While Randy Orton versus John Cena aren’t as flashy as the other rivalries on this list, their long-standing feud was characterized by the word “consistency,” giving the WWE Universe their money’s worth over the nearly two dozen matchups they had.

Edge

Embed from Getty Images

If you ask any Cena fan who they thought was the greatest rival of John Cena, you can expect to hear the name of the “Rated-R Superstar” Edge, going by Adam Copeland in AEW now, more times than you can imagine. Again, you may ask, “Why is that?” Cena and Edge needed each other, and they found one another at the right time.

In 2006, Cena was firmly in the trenches as WWE’s “next top guy.” Unfortunately, fans were already turning on him despite being the top dog for just a little under a year. On the flip side, Edge had to overcome setback after setback due to injury. When he was finally ready to break through, he needed his first great opponent.

Thus, a career-defining rivalry was born in 2006 at New Year’s Revolution. Cena, who went through hell and back, managed to come out of an Elimination Chamber Match still WWE Champion. When the “Champ” thought he survived, there was one more surprise waiting for him before the night ended.

For the first time in WWE History, the Money in the Bank contract would be cashed in, and Edge shocked the world on that night to claim his first WWE Championship. This moment created a ripple effect that brought us, potentially, Cena’s most memorable matches, specifically their Unforgiven 2006 TLC Match in Toronto, and cemented him as the face that will run the place for many years to come.

Edge didn’t come out of this feud a loser either, as the Rated-R Superstar was catapulted into mega stardom in the years following his trials with Cena. If Edge hadn’t retired in 2011, who knows how many more amazing matches the two could’ve had going into the 2010s?

Today, fans are still clamoring for one more match between the two. Unfortunately, it isn’t in the cards, considering the obvious circumstances.

Who do you think is the best rival of John Cena during his WWE Career?
