Hangman Adam Page continues his war with the Death Riders, taking on their young ward Wheeler Yuta. Elsewhere on the card, “Timeless” Toni Storm clashes with ROH Women’s World Champion Athena’s minion, Billie Starkz.

I understand the negative sentiment around the Death Riders storyline continuing, but I think this is moreso the gateway to their next storyline, whatever that may be. As for Toni Storm, her feud with Athena is off to a hot start. The ROH champion has made a reputation for herself as a ruthless, take-no-prisoners pugilist and Toni is the heart of AEW’s women’s division, so I expect this to be a compelling feud.

Follow along with live results from tonight’s card with updated play-by-play and takes from the matches!

AEW Dynamite Card Tonight:

Hangman Adam Page defeated Wheeler Yuta

Forbidden Door AEW World Tag Team Eliminator Match Quarterfinal: FTR defeated JetSpeed

AEW Women’s World Championship Eliminator Match: “Timeless” Toni Storm defeated Billie Starkz

Swerve Strickland defeated Hechicero

Mark Briscoe defeated Claudio Castagnoli

MJF spoke

Will Ospreay injury update

and more!

Where is AEW Dynamite Tonight?

AEW Dynamite airs live tonight from the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois.

What Time is AEW Dynamite Tonight?

AEW Dynamite airs tonight at 8 PM EST on TBS Network and Max.

AEW Dynamite Results

Excalibur broke the news in the opening seconds that there would be a tournament for the AEW World Tag Team Championship at Forbidden Door.

Hangman Page defeated Wheeler Yuta

Renee Paquette interviewed Page before his match, asking about his feelings of continuing his war with the Death Riders. MJF approached, hoping to bait Page into a match without earning it or using his contract won at the All In Men’s Casino Gauntlet. Page called him out on this and left a glaring MJF.

During his entrance, Page was cut off by Yuta but quickly gained the advantage as he stomped a mudhole in him in the corner. Death Valley Driver by Hangman further emphasized his dominance. With one Buckshot Lariat, Page won the match in quick fashion.

Post-match, Page grabbed a chain and struck him before wrapping it around his neck as blood streamed down his face. With sheer spite, he told him nobody was coming to save him and left as the crowd chanted “You deserve it!”

(If someone were to tune in, this is the perfect showcase of what makes Hangman, Hangman. His offense and rage and heart on full display—and Yuta sold it splendidly.)

Athena and Billie Starkz backstage segment

Starkz insulted “Timeless” Toni Storm ahead of their match tonight as Athena hyped up Starkz and herself.

FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler) defeated JetSpeed (“Speedball Mike Bailey & Kevin Knight) in a World Tag Team Eliminator Match

Stokely Hathaway accompanied FTR while wearing a crutch due to Adam Copeland’s Spear last week.

FTR immediately went to work on Bailey, having dazed Knight off into the crowd. JetSpeed toppled FTR with a top rope drive. Using his jacket, Harwood dragged Bailey down in the corner. Harwood and Wheeler were sent back with double-dropkicks from the top rope. Harwood worked Knight’s knee, with particular interest in the ringpost. Evoking Bret Hart, Harwood applied a figure-four to Knight on the ringpost, broken by Bailey. Inside cradle by Knight nearly pinned Harwood. Wheeler drove Bailey into the outside as he and the in-ring Harwood clutched JetSpeed into Sharpshooters.

Bailey moonsaulted to FTR on the outside to a massive ovation. He held Harwood up for Knight to deliver a high dropkick. Bailey sent Wheeler over the barricade and leapt onto him. Knight with a UFO Splash was trounced by an inside cradle by Harwood. Harwood dropped Bailey with a Slingshot Powerbomb to Knight and clung to Hathaway’s crutch to maintain position for the pinfall.

Post-match, Adam Copeland (from a big distance) confronted FTR. Hathaway reminded him he’s not allowed within feet of the team. Copeland assured them he wouldn’t strike, but sent out the Hurt Syndicate to brawl with FTR. While security was distracted, Copeland accidentally Speared a security guard, aiming for Hathaway.

(This was Bailey’s match. Knight’s always great, FTR is always great. But Bailey showed out in a way that will make this match a part of any highlight reel for pop-worthy moments.)

Nick Wayne, Kip Sabian, & Martha Wayne are “Uncaged”

Wayne hinted that the trio is planning for what they’re capable of when they’re “Uncaged”, which is a pun I’m very much here for.

Jon Moxley addressed Hangman Page

Celebrating Page’s confidence and grit, Moxley said he’s “ready to go again”. Stating he knows Page wouldn’t back down from a fight, that he’d be ready for him. Marina Shafir mouthed something at the camera.

Will Ospreay acknowledged his injury

Tony Schiavone acknowledged Ospreay being carried out during All In and the rumors of his injury. Ospreay admitted he was quiet about his 10-month neck injury. Furthermore, he rejoiced in the fall of the Death Riders. Back to his injury, he shared that his injury is treatable. Because of this, he may be back before Forbidden Door. He ended things by threatening the Death Riders upon his eventual return.

(Get better soon, Ospreay.)

Thekla, Julia Hart, & Skye Blue video package

Willow Nightingale called out Thekla in a backstage segment

Hurt Syndicate backstage segment

MJF bemoaned the Syndicate helping Copeland instead of helping him. An irate Lashley charged at MJF, retorting that he wanted him out of the group after making things about him all the time.

Toni Storm defeated Billie Starkz

Inside the opera box, Athena gazed down at her minion against her current rival.

Starkz charged at Storm, but the champion maneuvered around her. Starkz collided Storm into the commentary desk with a Tope Suicida and a senton. Storm pounced on the minion, as she rained down fists upon her. Starkz responded by dropping Storm’s spine on her knee. Starkz’s back bounced right on Storm’s knees. The minion tapped out due to a crossface chickenwing by Storm.

Post-match, Starkz assaulted Storm and beckoned Athena to cash in her contract. As Aubrey Edwards staggered back to consciousness, she nearly helped cash it in had Alex Windsor not come to Storm’s aid.

(Starkz made the most of her minutes in the ring. In each and every match she and Athena gets on AEW, it’s clear how important these opportunities are to them.)

Swerve Strickland versus Hechicero ended via disqualification

Don Callis gave a long-winded introduction to Hechicero that could have easily been condensed to one millisecond.

Hechicero grounded Strickland each time the latter gained any speed or momentum. Strickland engaged Hechicero in an Octopus Hold before taunting his signature pose. The rudo luchador’s control persisted, but the match’s favor tilted toward Strickland’s wily and unpredictable style. Strickland clutched his face because of a knee to the face courtesy of Hechicero. Flying shoulder-first, Strickland dove into Hechicero. Springboarding Strickland in the air, as he reeled him in for a Juji Gatame.

The match ended in disqualification when Lance Archer and Josh Alexander attacked Strickland. Brody King and Bandido brawled with Archer and Hechicero to the back. Kazuchika Okada struck Strickland with a chair. Strickland countered Okada’s Tombstone attempt on the chair, almost making a House Call with the Rainmaker’s head trapped in the seat.

(Unique matches like these are why I enjoy AEW. Strickland and Hechicero are diametrically different wrestlers but work around each other so well.)

Ricochet and Gates of Agony united backstage

Rechristening themselves as the JoA, Ricochet and Gates of Agony put the tag team division on notice with sheer arrogance.

MJF called out his enemies

Casting away Bobby Lashley and his dismissal of him, MJF turned his attention to Hangman Adam Page. Before he could continue, Mark Briscoe interrupted. Briscoe challenged MJF for a match in Chicago the following week, which MJF promptly rejected. While cheering Briscoe’s popularity and unique charm, he pointed out that the same fans who cheer him think he’s capable of being a “top guy.” MJF then made another ill-favored comparison between Mark to his late brother Jay. Briscoe charged at him, but MJF scurried off as Claudio Castagnoli’s theme began.

Mark Briscoe defeated Claudio Castagnoli

Castagnoli made an aesthetically pleasing entrance, as the Aragon Ballroom exemplified his “aura.”

The sturdy Castagnoli battled back and forth with the enraged Briscoe with chops and uppercuts, respectively. The Swiss Death Rider cornered the Delaware native with forearms and punches. Against the ropes, the pair exchanged chops until Briscoe dug into Castagnoli’s nostrils. Onto the barricades, Castagnoli swung Briscoe across it, tenderizing the Sussex County Chicken. Mid-air, Briscoe plunged right into Castagnili’s uppercut, which rendered him in a kneeling position.

Castagnoli stood momentarily distracted, as he was fixated on a staring Darby Allin. Briscoe clutched a comeback when he darted across the barricade for a DDT. Back in the ring, Briscoe landed a Froggy Bow, closely mounted a Jay Driller until Castagnoli toppled the redneck with an Avalanche Powerbomb. Seeking a Neutralizer, Castagnoli instead wound up in the clutches of Briscoe’s Small Package for the pinfall.

Post-match, The Death Riders joined Castagnoli to bully and beat up Briscoe. Hangman Adam Page strutted to the ring at Moxley’s request. Page declared that he wanted to prove not to the Jon Moxley of the Death Riders but the Jon Moxley that carried AEW for six years. Officially declaring a challenge, Page provided Moxley a rematch on the July 30 episode of Dynamite—with everyone banned from ringside.

(I hate to admit it, but despite every incredible match Briscoe puts on, MJF may be right in that even his fans might not see him as a top guy. He always delivers, but no one really sees him in the main title picture. And I’m saying this in the hopes he proves me wrong, because how can you not like Briscoe or feel a little hope for him to win in such a setting? Shifting gears, I hope the Moxley/Page match next week shifts the Death Riders out of the Men’s World Championship picture.)

Closing thoughts

This episode just flew by. Page and Storm are keeping their momentum, while Briscoe’s evergreen status was pointed out glaringly by MJF. Speaking of, I hope they’re not doing a full pivot away from his role in the Hurt Syndicate. Also, JetSpeed and FTR were incredible in their outing.
