Night of Champions is in the rearview, and WWE will now be gearing up for two nights in New Jersey.

As with WrestleMania, WWE has changed SummerSlam to a two-night event. This marks the first year that SummerSlam will be two nights, which puts some extra pressure on WWE. They are going to spare no expense on making this a historic night, prancing out every huge A-Lister that they can get their hands on.

When it comes down to it, SummerSlam will rise and fall on the matches that fill both nights. WWE needs to make sure these matches are the best possible. We have gotten some indication of a few matches that will make up the card, but many are still left to discuss. Let’s take a crack a predicting what the Biggest Party of the Summer will look like.

Predicting the WWE SummerSlam Card

WWE Championship Match: John Cena vs Cody Rhodes

This is the easiest match to predict, as WWE has more or less locked it in for Summerslam. Cody Rhodes won the King of the Ring tournament, setting up the awaited rematch from WrestleMania 41. Rhodes could set his sights on Gunther, but let’s be honest, this is the match that everyone wants including the American Nightmare. It was the rematch of the main event of Night 2 of WrestleMania, a match that contained a finish with more than dubious circumstances. Rhodes was cheated out of his WWE Championship and has not been shy about his desire to get that championship back. This is the big-time rematch WWE needs to main event night 2 of SummerSlam.

World Heavyweight Championship Match: Gunther vs Sami Zayn

Presuming Gunther gets past the 58-year-old Goldberg at Saturday Night’s Main Event, he will walk into WWE SummerSlam as the champ. Many could challenge him, but Sami Zayn would be the best option. The narrative of Zayn not being able to win the “big one” has been at the forefront of WWE programming. Karrion Kross has been adamant about Zayn lacking the killer instinct to get to the top, and now that he has vanquished Kross, a showdown with Gunther is the next logical step.

Sami Zayn and Gunther would be a money program. They have already torn it up at WrestleMania in a David vs Goliath styled contest with Zayn scoring the massive upset. WWE could lean heavily into this history as they ramp up for the world championship. Zayn has beaten Gunther once, what says he can’t do it again?

WWE Women’s Championship: Tiffany Stratton vs Jade Cargill

Jade Cargill has been on her way to a title match since she debuted in WWE. It has been a winding road, but she seems destined to end it with a match against Tiffany Stratton following her Queen of the Ring win. Cargill and Stratton will be a fantastic match, featuring two rising stars on the SmackDown brand. They have both had fairly positive reactions from the audience, so it will be fun to see how the match is booked and how the wrestling world reacts.

A little caveat to this WWE SummerSlam match will be how Naomi fits in. As the Money in the Bank winner, she can insert herself anywhere during this match. Whether it be to make it a triple threat or to pounce on the winner, rest assured, Naomi will be a part of this match. If Cargill wins, a cash-in should all but be assured.

Women’s World Championship: IYO SKY vs Asuka vs Rhea Ripley

IYO SKY and Asuka need to go to battle over the world championship. They are friends who have been involved with one another for years. They share similar styles, and with their talent, there is no doubt that they will put on a fantastic match that could steal the show. This is a pairing that hasn’t been promoted on WWE much, and with all their history, WWE can spin this into a SummerSlam showdown for the ages.

The addition of Rhea Ripley may not be needed here given Ripley is getting a shot at SKY at Evolution, but it could still happen. The Eradicator is too much of a star to leave out of a world championship match on the second biggest show of the year. She also has a long-standing history with both women and would provide a welcome contrast to their styles.

Women’s Intercontinental Championship Match: Becky Lynch vs Lyra Valkyria

Everyone loves a good rubber match, and WWE should make sure this one takes place at SummerSlam. Since WrestleMania, these two women have been joined at the hip. It started as a partnership but ended in betrayal.

Since ‘Mania, they have traded wins, with Lynch recently cheating her way to an Intercontinental Championship victory. There hasn’t been a time when either woman has maintained the advantage over the other, and WWE SummerSlam would be the perfect place to settle that score. Opening up night 1 of SummerSlam would be the ideal hot opener.

United States Championship Match: Solo Sikoa vs Jacob Fatu

The world was in a bit of shock when Solo Sikoa wrestled the United States Championship away from his former stablemate. Not many thought the title change would happen, but it did take the interference of a returning Tanga Loa and debuting Hikuleo to accomplish this. There is so much drama surrounding The Bloodline saga that it’s hard to think that it will ever end. Jacob Fatu and Solo Sikoa have only been in the ring once, and there is a lot more story to tell here.

With the newest iteration of The Bloodline ready to run roughshod, it’s hard to imagine Sikoa and Fatu not facing off at WWE SummerSlam. The Samoan Werewolf isn’t finished with Sikoa yet, and he will want his United States Championship back.

CM Punk vs Seth Rollins

The never-ending saga of CM Punk and Seth Rollins keeps chugging along. Since CM Punk returned, these men have been at each other’s throats. Rollins hasn’t hidden his contempt for the Second City Saint, and it has driven a lot of his behavior. Seth Rollins has screwed CM Punk every time Punk has gotten close to greatness, with Night of Champions being the latest chapter. There is no way that Punk will let this go, and he will do whatever it takes to get The Architect one-on-one.

The issues between these men need to end, and WWE SummerSlam might be the perfect place to do so. This match will need a gimmick to increase the stakes, as a regular match won’t do their issues justice. It would be interesting to see Rollins’ Money in the Bank briefcase hanging above the ring for a ladder match, but any big-time gimmick will do.

Multi-Man/Woman Match for the United States and Intercontinental Championship

The biggest shows always need to have a match or two, that thrives off the chaos that a multi-person match creates. It’s a great way to fit more talent on the card and give the audience a break from the more serious matches that fill up the night. There is a bevy of contenders for both the Women’s United States and Men’s Intercontinental championships. These would be the perfect straps to have on the line in a fatal four-way, 6-pack, or another gimmick match. It would provide a great bit of fun for the New Jersey crowd at WWE SummerSlam.

Bron Breakker & Bronson Reed vs Penta & L.A. Knight

Seth Rollins’ two heavies have made several enemies since joining with The Visionary. They are as physically imposing as anyone in the company, and together they have formed an unstoppable force. It would be awesome to see them put into a high-profile tag match at SummerSlam, with their two biggest rivals opposing them.

Penta and L.A. Knight have been having some well-documented issues with Breakker and Reed. They have been the babyfaces to stand against the heel tide. Both men would be a great tag team to take on the big hosses at WWE SummerSlam.

WWE SummerSlam is set to feature some incredible showdowns.
Credit: WWE

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on WWE SummerSlam, and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
