The PLE started as a branch of the Vengeance show but soon became a show of its own. The allure of the show, initially, was the fact that every championship in the company was defended. It was a night like no other, and although it has evolved there, it still remains one of the best shows on the WWE calendar.

When stripped down to its bare bones, Night of Champions’ success has been due to its laundry list of great matches. The show has been home to some fantastic matches that have pushed its aura and made it a WWE mainstay. Below is a list of these matches.

Michelle McCool vs Melina (WWE Women’s Championship Match, 2009)

Back when women’s wrestling was still trying to get its footing in WWE, Michelle McCool and Melina were working their butts off. This match got as much build as a female match would, at the time, but that didn’t stop Melina and McCool from teaching a lesson to many by putting on a fantastic match.

The 6-minute run-time meant there wasn’t much room for error with these women, and there wasn’t. This was a perfectly wrestled match featuring two of the best on the roster. It wasn’t filled with punches and slaps; this was two great wrestlers working through fantastic spots. Their work on the outside of the ring, especially involving the barricade, was great.

It showed a further development in women’s wrestling and was widely considered one of the best of 2009.

Triple H vs John Cena (WWE Championship Match, 2008)

John Cena and Triple H were titans of World Wrestling Entertainment. The World Championship picture was filled with one or both of these men, even pitting them against each other on occasion. They had higher-profile matches than this Night of Champions encounter, but it was still a fantastic match. Indicative of the massive talent of both men.

The WWE Championship match began with a slow burn, with both men trying to get one over the other. It was a welcome departure from previous matches to see the face v face dynamic. The crowd was split on who to cheer for, and that helped to increase the drama as the match went on. With how Triple H’s reign was going, the finish didn’t come as a huge shock, but it was still expertly done by two of the best.

Sheamus vs Chris Jericho vs Wade Barrett vs John Cena vs Edge vs Randy Orton (6-Pack Challenge Match for the WWE Championship, 2010)

Multi-man matches are usually a great watch. The organized chaos that takes place during the contests is what draws fans to the matches. This match had that chaos in spades, but was also boosted up by the fact that it was an all-star cast filling up the spots. It added to the ambiguity of who would be walking out of Night of Champions as the WWE Champion.

There wasn’t a time when the action wasn’t rampant in this contest. It started with the 6 men brawling and didn’t stop from there. The pairing off of the wrestlers, in various combinations, was fun. Orton and Cena teasing a showdown, with the other heels ruining the payoff, was a great way to work the babyfaces against one another.

Jericho’s very early elimination was a fun shock, and the Nexus’s interference had many believing that Wade Barrett might walk away the champ. In the end, we were treated with another surprise when the RKO was hit, and Randy Orton started his sixth World Championship reign.

Sheamus vs Cesaro (United Championship Match, 2014)

These two men were intertwined for years in WWE. They formed one heck of a dominant tag team and put on some of the hardest-hitting matches in WWE history. Sheamus and Cesaro were the men one turned to when bangers were expected, and Night of Champions was one of those times.

This match was what one would look too when looking for a stiff match. Sheamus and Cesaro were known for working snug, but this took it to another level. They hammered into each other with blows that would have put a normal wrestler down. It was as expected from these two, but that didn’t make it any less impressive. What was also impressive was the great chain wrestling exhibited by both men.

Not something that was expected, but something that helped to add more depth to the United States Championship match.

Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn vs Roman Reigns & Solo Sikoa (WWE Undisputed Tag Team Championship Match, 2023)

The tag team scene was absolutely on fire in 2023. There wasn’t a bad match on either show, and the tag straps main evented WrestleMania for the first time in history. It was a banner year, and one that included an under-the-radar match featuring The Bloodline.

Shockingly, this match isn’t remembered that well, considering how fantastic it was. It was a match that was filled with all sorts of drama. The cracks in The Bloodline had started to form, and Roman Reigns was trying to take matters into his own hands. We could see his arrogance in full force here, and watching him and Sikoa fall at the hands of the champs, and the Usos was a cathartic moment for us all.

Of course, the wrestling in this match was amazing. Owens and Zayn were the perfect baby faces to take on Reigns and Sikoa. They had oodles of history with both men and miles of chemistry. It was a great back-and-forth match that kept everyone on the edge of their seat.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on WWE Night of Champions, King of the Ring, Queen of the Ring, and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
