The former AEW Women’s World Champion hasn’t been on AEW programming since Revolution on March 9th. Her absence has fueled growing rumors about a potential transfer to WWE.

A number of AEW talent have made the switch to WWE in 2025. The Lucha Brothers, Rusev, Aleister Black, and Ricky Saints have all departed Tony Khan’s promotion in order to join WWE. With the latest development in May’s story, it looks like she will be the first woman to make the switch between the promotions this year.

On Friday, May 30th, May’s profile was removed from AEW’s roster page. This almost always signals that the wrestler’s time is up at the respective company.

Mariah May’s departure has taken many by surprise, given the disparity between her contract length and her centrality to key storylines over the past two years. May’s contract, which will expire soon, was for only two years without the option to extend.

Mariah May officially joined AEW in 2023 after a successful stint in Stardom. Throughout her time at AEW, May worked extensively with Toni Storm both as an ally and a rival.

May’s victory in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament in 2024 proved to be the catalyst for her betrayal of Storm. This, in turn, led to their title match at All In, where May defeated Storm to win the women’s world title in front of her hometown crowd in London.

May’s world title reign was highly successful, being defended seven times and lasting 174 days. She defended against AEW’s very best, including Willow Nightingale, Thunder Rosa, and another ally-turned-rival, Mina Shirakawa. She would eventually lose the title to Toni Storm at Grand Slam Australia before completing their trilogy at Revolution in her final AEW match.

The ‘Hollywood Ending’ match that capped the trilogy was widely acclaimed by fans and journalists. Praised strongly for its exceptional storytelling and extreme violence, it is an early contender for 2025’s Match of the Year.

Mariah May: A Versatile Star with a Lot of Time on Her Side

With May’s time is officially up at AEW, it looks almost certain that the British star will be joining WWE. Several WWE sources have claimed that WWE moved immediately to bring May to the company once news of her impending contract expiration broke.

WWE will, of course, have to wait to negotiate until she is officially a free agent. But that shouldn’t prove to be a sticking point for professional wrestling’s biggest promotion.

At just 26, Mariah May has already achieved so much on both the mainstream and indie scenes. Her ‘Hollywood’ storyline has shown that she already has the ability to match the very best in the business and will have increased WWE’s interest in signing her. The ‘Hardcore Barbie’ offers a versatile addition to the women’s roster, who, excitedly, still has so much time to grow.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – AEW – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on Mariah May, AEW, and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
