Now, some 20+ years later and sadly one year after Rose’s passing, he’s eligible for another Hall of Fame, one that would likely mean just a little more to MLB’s hit king. On Tuesday, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred announced that Pete Rose, Shoeless Joe Jackson, and several others, were being removed from the permanently ineligible list and would be eligible for Hall of Fame induction from the Veterans Committee. In his MLB career, Rose was a stud. His career spanned 23 years with three different teams (the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, and Montreal Expos).

Over that span he won three World Series titles, was named to the All Star Game 17x, was a three-time National League batting champion and 2x Gold Glove Award winner for his defensive skills. Among his other accolades: NL MVP, World Series MVP, NL Rookie of the Year, Roberto Clemente Award, and Silver Slugger Award. Rose was named to MLB’s All-Century Team in 1999 and has his number ’14’ retired with the Reds. Of course, none of that denotes Rose’s biggest accomplishment in baseball: 4,256. That’s the amount of hits Rose amassed in his career, a number that still stands to this day.

Read More: Manfred Lifts Lifetime Ban On Pete Rose, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Others

It might leave many wondering why Rose isn’t in the Baseball Hall of Fame already. Well, simply put, he bet on baseball while he was a manager, leading to people to question the integrity of the results of games his team lost. Rose claimed he never bet on the Reds to lose while managing them, but the betting around the league was enough for baseball to institute a lifetime ban and make the legend ineligible for Hall of Fame induction. Tuesday’s decision by Manfred to remove Rose from the list means that veteran sportswriters have the chance to induct the hit king into baseball immortality.

But…we’re not here to talk about if Rose does or doesn’t deserve to make the National Baseball Hall of Fame. We’re not really here to talk about his career swinging a bat and swiping bases at all. That’s for our colleagues over at Last Word on Baseball. On the week that baseball glory is within Rose’s grasp, we wanted to look back at the post-baseball career he enjoyed, the one that got him into his first hall of fame over two decades ago.

Pete Rose WWE Hall of Fame, Class of 2004

A Rose by Any Other Name is Still…Getting Tortured by Kane

In 1998, Pete Rose made his WWE debut when he served as a special guest ring announcer for the bout between Kane and the Undertaker at WrestleMania XIV. Before the match began, Rose cut a promo, taunting the Boston crowd, specifically the Red Sox’ loss to the Red in the 1975 World Series. That Reds team was known by the moniker of “The Big Red Machine.” Ironically, there was another Big Red Machine and he came out to give Rose a tombstone piledriver much to the cheers of the hometown crowd. Kane was a heel at the time, but you know how fans are when supporting their teams.

The following year, Pete Rose was back in WWE as he sought revenge against Kane. The angle took place at WrestleMania XV in 1999 where Rose dressed as the San Diego Chicken and attacked Kane prior to his match. Neither Rose nor the chicken were a match for the Devil’s Favorite Demon as Kane once again tombstoned Rose. At WrestleMania 2000, Rose tried one last time to get payback on Kane, this time attempting to attack him from behind with a baseball bat. But Rose’s efforts were thwarted not only by Kane, who chokeslammed him, but by Kane’s tag team partner on the night, Rikishi, who hit him with the stinkface.

In addition to his memorable WrestleMania trilogy as it were, Pete Rose also appeared in a Halloween-themed commercial to promote WWE No Mercy in 2002. He was once again met by Kane, who chokeslammed him. So naturally, when it came time for WWE to induct Rose as the first celebrity to go into the new Celebrity Wing of the Hall of Fame, he was inducted by Kane. No violence took place. Rose escaped unharmed.

Eight years later, Pete Rose would make his final WWE appearance as the guest host of Raw’s WrestleMania XXVI go-home show. Naturally, Rose took his role as a chance for revenge, booking Kane in a match against Shawn Michaels. Michaels was victorious but Rose’s joy at finally besting his rival was shortlived as Rose found Kane waiting for him in his office. Kane pulled him in and loud sounds were heard from outside of the door as Christian, embracing his early Patriarch, simply listened as Kane beat up Rose offscreen and walked away. Two years later, Kane would recount his rivalry with Rose during his anger management class, noting, “for reasons never quite explained, I have an unhealthy obsession with torturing Pete Rose.”

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on Pete Rose WWE and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
