The Elite took turns working Omega’s left arm, but unfortunately for Ricochet, he turned the tables so that Nick would accidentally work his arm. The team of babyfaces then reciprocated by targeting Ricochet. After Briscoe gave Matt enough grief, everyone kept failing elbow drops. Briscoe and Bailey combined their efforts to spin around the Bucks a few times until sending them tumbling out of the ring. Matt and Ricochet handled Bailey and Knight with Northern Lights Suplexes before taunting with Ricochet pretending he had Matt’s hair. The Elite and Ricochet trapped the babyfaces for an epic Brainbuster spot, returned in kind by Omega, Briscoe, Bailey, and Knight landing splashes to their opponents on the outside.

With most of his compatriots disposed of, Omega was caught by Okada and Nick. Meanwhile, Ricochet and Matt reintroduced a hopeful savior, Bailey, to the mat. Omega dunked Ricochet baldly into the mat, leading for a hot Briscoe tag. At last, Omega and Okada met in the middle of the ring, trading forearms. Missing a One-Winged Angel and a V-Trigger gave way to The Elite and Ricochet dismantling all of them. Briscoe slammed Okada with a Jay Driller, nearly putting him away, had it not been for a meddling Ricochet. Knight dropkicked Ricochet off of Bailey’s shoulders to The Bucks outside. Omega desperately crawled to the ring as Okada ultimately pinned Briscoe after a vicious Rainmaker.

A match so comedic and over the top, yet so epic and oozing with star power. This is the energy needed to start the show. Okada and Omega gave a nasty little tease, but everyone else excelled, also. Briscoe’s face is like Sami Zayn and Mick Foley; he’s undeniable. Bailey and Knight were meant to be a tag team. And lastly, Ricochet’s proven in months that he has far more to offer than what WWE gave him. If AEW fans were petty, they’d chant “Hunter fumbled”.

Hurt Syndicate backstage segment

MVP, Bobby Lashley, and Shelton Benjamin beat up a group of fans who were backstage for some reason for chanting “We hurt people!”. MVP then implored Lashley to consider MJF’s pleas to join their team in the past few weeks.

The Opps defeated Nick Comoroto, Rhett Titus, & Myles Hawkins

Joe wrecked Titus, and Shibata’s chops made it no easier. Comoroto ate enough of Shibata’s sharp chops and suffered a knee from The Wrestler because of it. Hobbs took Hawkins and rampaged before quickly ending the match courtesy of a Spinebuster.

Post-match, the Death Riders ambushed the celebrating Opps. Joe caught Moxley in a choke, relinquished at the sight of Castagnoli planting Shibata on an upside-down open chair. As Joe and Hobbs rushed to his aid, the Riders scurried. Joe then accused Moxley of not wanting the match before suggesting their upcoming AEW World Championship in a steel cage.

Typical squash, but Joe had the crowd fully behind him the whole way through. Many a time, we’ve said “this is the one” for a wrestler to dethrone Moxley, but I really want it to be Joe this time.

Mercedes Mone interview with Renee Paquette

Mone scoffed at the idea of facing Jamie Hayter, mocking her looks and laying out her phenomenal accomplishments.

Jay Lethal challenged Nick Wayne for the ROH Television Title, Christian Cage accepted on his behalf

Toni Storm defeated Miyu Yamashita

Yamashita started the match trying to kickbox Storm, but the AEW Women’s Champion subverted her. Aiming for a hip attack, Storm instead became lodged between the turnbuckles at a ringpost. Luther intervened to help free her, but Yamashita laid both of them out. Storm resorted to forearms, to which Yamashita gleefully accepted. She delivered a sound Roundhouse Kick but tumbled to Storm’s release German suplex. Yamashita landed a Spinning Reverse Skull Kick, but couldn’t put Storm away. Finally slamming Yamashita with a Hip Attack in the corner, Storm won the match with a Storm Zero, curtaining the match.

Post-match, Mercedes Mone called out Storm, but sprinted away at the arrival of a spiteful Jamie Hayter. Storm then ended the segment by dancing to Hayter’s entrance music.

Too short. Yamashita made a damn good splash, though. With the time she got with Nattie at Bloodsport, Yamashita has at least been landing on bigger radars, so there’s that.

Don Callis backstage promo

Callis touted Fletcher’s wrestling acumen. Fletcher then demanded Callis say his full name.

Hurt Syndicate and MJF segment

With his fellow Syndicate members in tow, MVP beckoned MJF to the ring. Leaving it to a vote, MVP and Benjamin voted yes. After a significant pause, with several teases to thumbs-up and thumbs-down, Lashley sonn voted against MJF to join them. MJF then proclaimed to be sick of Lashley’s attitude, for lack of a better word. Accusing Lashley of being bald, the heavy charged him in the corner. Lashley concluded that MJF would need to hurt people to join their trio.

They’re really going to keep dragging this storyline. All four men are talented, and we’re stuck with this. However, kudos for making it short and sweet. The story was told effectively, and that’s a plus for this storyline currently.

Stokely Hathaway and FTR video package

Nick Wayne (c) (with The Patriarchy) defeated Jay Lethal for the ROH Television Championship

Lethal attempted a Handshake of Honor, but Wayne callously kicked it away. Whittling away at Wayne, Lethal taunted Cage, punctuating with a basement dropkick. Wayne regained control with a Hurricanrana on the ramp, followed by tossing his challenger into the steel steps at ringside. Lethal kept Wayne at bay, seeking an Elbow Drop for the finish. Wayne bounced back with cradles and roll-ups, eventually winning after a Fisherman’s Buster.

Post-match, Cage adorned Wayne’s torso with his championship.

Some fun high spots here and there, but nothing significant to latch onto.

AEW Beach Break announcement

Tony Schiavone and Excalibur said that Jon Moxley’s AEW World Championship defence would take place at AEW Beach Break in the NOW Arena in Chicago, Illinois on May 14.

Hangman Page defeated Kyle Fletcher

Both men locked horns, with Fletcher advancing Page to the ropes. Page withstood the offense with an understated, quiet stare of anger. He sent an unholy flurry of punches raining on The Protostar. The cowboy hinted at a Buckshot Lariat, changing it to a running one instead towards a fleeing Fletcher. The pair brawled outside, with Page’s fury bloodying Fletcher’s hide against the LED barricades. The competitors clashed again and again, with Page dropping the Aussie with a cruel, yet smooth lariat and a back-body drop. He continued with forearms to Fletcher’s neck in the corner. The right shoulder of Page endured such abrasions that he had a bloody red mark of his own. Fletcher sacrificed himself to drop Page to the outside with a Brainbuster. The crowd roared as Page flipped with a Moonsault off of the barricade followed by a Tombstone to Fletcher.

Charging at Page, Fletcher fell victim to a nasty Powerbomb. Fletcher met Page with one of his own. A Deadeye by Page rolled the Protostar out of the ring. A Moonsault nearly gave way to a Buckshot Lariat, still, Fletcher met him with a Brainbuster. A series of forearms at last gave Page enough control to smash Fletcher with a Buckshot Lariat, earning him a pinfall victory. He advances in the Owen Hart Tournament.

Fletch and Page ended a night where the 8-man and a Yamashita dream match delivered on expectations. At this point, these two are no strangers to nasty, brutal matches. Expect nothing less.

Final thoughts

Aside from the squashes and the ROH TV match, everything lived up to the excitement. Even the post-matches furthered the stories. AEW has flipped the switch with 2024’s booking. We’re officially in the Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four: First Steps stretch before AEW brings us in for their Avengers Doomsday and Avengers Secret Wars. That’s the best way I can equate it.

Check back for tonight’s AEW Dynamite results.
