In a company obsessed with rattling off statistics, they love to hang their hat on this. For a career as influential as The Undertaker’s, this is the number that follows him the most.

The streak has amassed some interesting victims during its run. The Undertaker has run the gambit from monsters to workers to powerhouses. He has cut his way through them all, well, except two, and as much as we like to admire the streak, the match quality has run from fantastic to not so much.

His streak represents an iconic journey, but one that is spotty at best. For every great match that the streak has claimed, there is another match that had the fans wanting to leave the arena. Below are the best and worst of these matches.

Worst: The Undertaker vs. Giant Gonzalez (WrestleMania 9)

As you may have heard, The Undertaker had a terrible match at WrestleMania 9. It is the infamous match from the streak, and for good reason.

It was a lumbering match that had no rhythm and could have happened in an empty arena, with how little fan reaction was taking place. No one was invested in this match, and the action did little to keep their attention.

The screwy finish involving a rag of chloroform was a lazy attempt at shock value. There was no realism to the spot, and it was a terrible way to give The Undertaker the win. Of course, this match reflected the Giants’ non-talent as opposed to The Undertaker’s incredible skill.

Still was a stinker though.

Best: The Undertaker vs. Triple H (WrestleMania 28)

To make this more interesting, we will only be looking at The Undertaker’s best match from his multiple trilogy of matches. The whole list could be filled with only two men, and that’s not a fun way to do things. That being said, all of his Triple H matches were fantastic, but this one sneaks its way to the top.

Their previous two matches had grown in intensity, and there was nowhere to go but up with this match. The Hell in a Cell gimmick was the only way to end an era, and that era’s two biggest stars went out with a bang.

It was a match dripping with drama as it was the closest that anyone ever came to breaking the streak. We can all remember the moment when the superkick turned into a pedigree, and the whole world thought it was over. Only to have The Undertaker’s shoulder come up at the last millisecond.

It was the cherry on top of a match with an incredible story.

Worst: A-Train & The Big Show (WrestleMania 19)

The Undertaker had faced many great challenges, and some inside WWE thought that the team of The Big Show and A-Train was going to be one. Unfortunately, the match build was awful, and the match was just as bad.

Nathan Jones was scheduled to be The Undertaker’s partner but, when that fell through, WWE decided to go with the handicapped match that no one wanted to see. The action was stilted throughout, and one could tell that the booking didn’t change much after Nathan Jones’s absence. It was not a match that was worthy of being on television, let alone taking place at WrestleMania.

Best: Batista (WrestleMania 23)

Batista and The Undertaker’s WrestleMania 23 encounter was not treated very seriously. It was a World Championship match, yes, but it always felt like it took a backseat to two other matches. This spurred even further motivation from both men as they turned in one of the unexpectedly fantastic WrestleMania title matches.

The Deadman and The Animal turned in a fantastic performance. It was hard-hitting but included a surprising amount of technical skill.

It was one of the first matches to highlight the streak, and it added a heightened sense of drama. With great action and a handful of suspenseful near-falls, it is an underrated match in The Undertaker’s WrestleMania history.

Worst: The Undertaker vs. King Kong Bundy (WrestleMania 11)

There was a long streak, within the streak, where The Undertaker was fed monsters. It would have been a great idea if any of these monsters were able to work a half-decent match, but we were forced to suffer through ones involving the likes of King Kong Bundy.

At his best, 10 years earlier, Bundy was a slow-working individual. With his size, he couldn’t work an interesting contest, and The Undertaker was still far away from being able to work outside of his character. That means we were given six minutes of men punching and kicking their way to a finish.

There was nothing fun about this match, and the only cheer that they got was when the match was over.

Best: Randy Orton (WrestleMania 21)

The young, hungry wrestler trying to make his name by upending the veteran is an often-used storyline. When it involves two of the best to enter a wrestling ring, the story and match can produce classic moments. The fantastic match between Randy Orton and The Undertaker is the perfect example of how well it can go.

The Undertaker and Randy Orton put on a battle for the ages. They worked very well against one another, and the match was more evenly split than previous WrestleMania encounters.

Not many gave Orton a chance, but he proved his worth by taking The Undertaker the distance. It was a great showcase of both men’s talents and, of course, was highlighted by perhaps the best chokeslam reversal in WWE history.

Worst: Brock Lesnar (WrestleMania 30)

Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker have had some great matches. They have competed in multiple Hell in a Cell matches, Biker Chain Matches, and others that will go down as WWE greats. Unfortunately, their WrestleMania 30 match will not be considered one of those greats.

This match was severely hindered by a concussion suffered by The Undertaker. The match stalled from that point on, with neither man committing to what they were doing.

It looked like there was more to the match, but most of the spots were forgotten. That’s not to place blame, just stating the perception of the contest.

Also, the ending of the streak was awful. Lesnar was not the right man to do it, and the finish left a bad taste in the mouths of everyone watching.

Best: Edge (WrestleMania 24)

The streak was becoming its own entity heading into WrestleMania 24. The Undertaker and Edge had created a fantastic build towards their main event contest, and the world was convinced that The Rated-R Superstar had a legitimate shot of ending the fabled streak.

The action was exactly what one would come to expect from these two greats. It was a slow build that led to some dynamic wrestling that included some great near-falls that had everyone holding their collective breath.

When the match boiled down to anarchy, it looked as if the streak would be over, which is a testament to the talent of both individuals. It was a match worthy of the main event of WrestleMania.

Worst: Mark Henry (WrestleMania 22)

The Casket Match stipulation is a difficult one to pull off. The rules are simple but they limit what the competitors can do in the ring. There have been more bad Casket Matches than good ones, and The Undertaker and Mark Henry’s WrestleMania one is under the bad category.

With The Streak in full swing, WWE needed to give The Undertaker opponents that could conceivably break it, Henry was not one of those men. It was a physical contest, which helped, but it was too slow.

The Undertaker and Mark Henry had a hard time keeping the crowd’s attention, and stumbling around the casket didn’t help matters much. In the end, The Undertaker retained his streak, to the surprise of no one.

Best: Shawn Michaels (WrestleMania 26)

It was a toss-up between WrestleMania 25 and 26 for this list. Both matches were incredible matches that were as close to being perfect as possible, but the drama that surrounded WrestleMania 26 gives it the slightest of edges.

The need for Shawn Michaels to break The Streak had him put his career on the line. In his words, if he couldn’t be the streak, he didn’t have a career. It was a sentiment that drove HBK mad with desperation as he did everything he could to go over The Undertaker.

It was such a drama-filled match that no one ever wanted it to end. There was a perfection to everything that they did with the moves, the storytelling, and how The Undertaker finally ended the career of HBK. The final defiant slap from HBK was the punctuation mark to a match that will live forever in our minds.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on The Undertaker, WWE, and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
