Since the turn of the year, Escobar has appeared just twice in the ring.

His first appearance was a six-minute cameo in the Royal Rumble, eventually being eliminated by Intercontinental Champion Bron Breakker. The second was a loss to LA Knight on his road to recapturing the US title. But that doesn’t mean that Escobar is being written off our screens.

One of the most pleasant surprises of 2025 has been the scorching SmackDown tag team division. #DIY, the Motor City Machine Guns, Pretty Deadly, Los Garza, and the newly crowned tag team champions The Street Profits, have been embroiled in a long-running feud with more twists and turns than your favorite Shakespearean tragicomedy.

While the power rankings continue to shift, Los Garza – who are led by Escobar – seem to be permanently stuck at the back of the line.

Santos Escobar Stands Out

In recent months, #DIY, MCMG, and The Street Profits have exchanged the WWE Tag Team Championship while Pretty Deadly is set to challenge for the titles this week on Smackdown. This will be their second tag title match following a no-contest with DIY last month.

Meanwhile, Los Garza continues to wait for their first golden opportunity of 2025. But there is one thing that Los Garza has that their rivals don’t: their manager and stable leader, Santos Escobar.

Outside of the tag division scuffles, Legado Del Fantasma has encountered its own hurdles in 2025. Stable member Elektra Lopez was unfortunately part of the contingent of superstars released by WWE in February and this perhaps explains why Escobar has shifted into a more managerial role. However, the move hasn’t been to Escobar’s disadvantage.

It has allowed the WWE Universe to see a different side to the Luchador. Clad in crisp tailoring and tinted sunglasses, Escobar has been a rousing, intelligent voice for Los Garza during their promos. Title matches have yet to materialize for Angel and Berto, but Escobar is certainly an ace up their sleeves.

Following in the Footsteps of MVP?

The move to ringside is reminiscent of MVP’s management of the Hurt Syndicate (formerly the Hurt Business). MVP enjoyed success on the WWE mid-card in the mid-2000s before his momentum slowed. While Escobar is eleven years younger than MVP, perhaps he has realized that there are multiple routes to success and, more importantly, longevity in professional wrestling.

As the SmackDown mid-card remains competitive, Escobar’s managerial role is a chance to highlight his qualities on the mic. The SmackDown tag team division is red hot and continues to capture the attention of the wrestling world.

As these five tag teams strive for supremacy, Escobar remains the sole manager attached to this enthralling feud. As a ringside voice, there is an opportunity to stand out.

With WrestleMania a month away, the plans for the tag team division remain unclear. If he could steer Los Garza to tag team success in the future, and hopefully at WrestleMania, it could be the first coup in a promising managerial career for Escobar.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on Santos Escobar, WWE SmackDown, and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
