Here are some of our favorite and most memorable moments of last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13237\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13237\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13237\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/maxresdefault-1-3-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13237\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our first pick is the <em><strong>SummerSlam<\/strong><\/em> Fatal 4-Way Universal Championship Match featuring none other than <strong>Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, Samoa Joe<\/strong> and <strong>Braun Strowman<\/strong>. The lead-up to this main event melee could not have been better. First, despite being some of the most notorious figures in the WWE, the four of them had barely experienced any physical confrontations with each other prior to this event. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, for Brock Lesnar, the drama and the stakes were raised even higher. Not only did <strong>Jon Jones<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/mma\/2017\/7\/30\/16064422\/jon-jones-brock-lesnar-ufc-214-results-daniel-cormier-wwe\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">call him out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0just moments after Jones had reclaimed the UFC Light Heavyweight title, but Lesnar\u2019s manager, <strong>Paul Heyman<\/strong>, had also announced that if Lesnar lost, he would quit the WWE altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ensuing brawl among these four heavyweight gladiators did not disappoint. The match was so thrilling that the entire Barclays crowd remained on its feet from the time each warrior entered the ring until the final winner was declared. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nonstop action \u2014 interweaved with captivating storytelling \u2014 was a sight to see. Strowman lifted tables and stairs, Roman launched multiple spears and at one point, Joe\u2019s signature coquina clutch looked like it could finally end it all. Then Lesner got carted away for medical attention after Strowman body-slammed him into multiple tables. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The match took on an entirely different energy during the subsequent several minutes of triple-threat combat. And finally, Lesnar dramatically returned to the ring to eliminate his rivals and retain his title (which was not that much of a surprise given that his UFC suspension would remain in effect for several more months).<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13241\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13241\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13241\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/cena-vs-styles-e1517067087942.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13241\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A.J. Styles<\/strong> spent an entire year defending a title that no one thought he\u2019d ever catch a whiff of, let alone possess. And for much of 2016, Styles fans and foes alike got a kick out of watching him and his peeps \u201cbeat up <strong>John Cena<\/strong>.\u201d But when Styles and Cena finally faced off in the WWE championship match at Royal Rumble, the two rivals gave us a fight to remember. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although both wrestling superstars ended up exchanging finishing moves, it was Cena who eventually emerged victorious, crushing Styles with an attitude adjustment from the top rope. And to top it all off, this victory signifies the moment when Cena tied <strong>Ric Flair<\/strong>\u2019s record of 16 World Championships, thereby cementing this event\u2019s place in pro wrestling history.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13238\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13238\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13238\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/01\/maxresdefault-13-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13238\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: NJPW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year\u2019s NJPW trilogy between <strong>Kenny Omega<\/strong> and <strong>Kazuchika Okada<\/strong>\u00a0was too extraordinary to rate the individual matches against each other. So, we will take a bit of journalistic license and venerate all three matches with equally-deserving awe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These three epic battles took place in January (at <em><strong>Wrestle Kingdom 11<\/strong><\/em>), June (at <em><strong>Dominion<\/strong><\/em>), and August (at the <em><strong>G1 Climax<\/strong><\/em>), respectively. The almost telepathic chemistry between these two relentless combatants was reminiscent of the days of Ric Flair vs. <strong>Ricky Steamboat<\/strong>. Each match was unique, but they all shared specific defining characteristics: jaw-dropping action and athleticism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event at the <em><strong>Wrestle Kingdom 11<\/strong> <\/em>boasted the biggest stage, and was Omega and Okada\u2019s first head-to-head competition, ending with Okada winning the IWGP Heavyweight Crown. After an entire 60 minutes of back-and-forth, the fight at the Dominion resulted in a draw, which is quite a rarity in today\u2019s wrestling universe \u2014 particularly when a match is filled with continuous, heart-pumping action. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their third rumble at the G1 Climax stood out as the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most fast-paced<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2018\/01\/10\/the-50-best-matches-of-2017-part-2\/\" target=\"_self\">of the three contests<\/a>, with Omega finally besting his opponent (although there wasn\u2019t a title on the line this time).
