It was taken from various places, yes, but it is one of the few gimmicks that WWE can claim as its own.

The chamber has been the host to many great matches. You are not a main member of the WWE roster if you haven’t been inside a pod waiting your turn to enter the fray. It is a badge of honor for wrestlers, and the match has housed some of the most important moments in the company’s history.

In recent years, the chamber has become a pivotal stop on the Road to WrestleMania. Normally, it is used as a way to determine the number one contender, but there have been some fantastic matches that have decided who will be the world champion. These matches have been some of the best in company history and helped to make the Elimination Chamber match a part of history.

Below are the best of these championship matches.

WWE No Way Out 2009 – John Cena vs Rey Mysterio vs Chris Jericho vs Mike Knox vs Edge vs Kane (World Heavyweight Championship)

This was one of the most intriguingly booked of the Elimination Chamber matches. By 2009, we had 7 years of chamber matches in our memory, and the match was usually booked in the same manner.

Yes, the violence and action were always great, but it was missing something. This was the match that gave it that little bit extra.

Kofi Kingston was the scheduled participant in the Elimination Chamber, which was turned on its head when Edge pulled a power play. He used his relationship with SmackDown GM Vickie Guerrero to insert himself into the chamber match, smashing Kingston with a vicious chair shot to do so. It was an interesting move inserting a Raw wrestler into the Smackdown chamber match.

It was even more interesting when Edge was the man who walked out of the match with the World Heavyweight Championship.

Another interesting note was the fact that John Cena, the reigning champion, was eliminated with 3 participants still left. It was the first time that the reigning champion had not been part of the final two. There was an audible gasp from the audience.

WWE Survivor Series 2002 – Triple H vs Booker T vs Rod Van Dam vs Chris Jericho vs Kane vs Shawn Michaels (World Heavyweight Championship)

The first iteration of any gimmick match is usually in the top 5 of that particular match. The Elimination Chamber is no different from the 2002 version, which is an absolute banger.

In 2002, there were too many credible challengers to fit into any gimmick match they had in their arsenal; thus, the Elimination Chamber was created.

The roster headed into this match was stacked. It was the top contenders to the championship, with a returning Shawn Michaels rounding out the bunch. There was a great mix of young and veteran stars who meshed well with one another.

One of the biggest differences with this match was the unknown factor. No one knew what the match was and how they could work within its confines. There was a ton of creativity here with the spots, and we got to see a lot of things we hadn’t witnessed before.

It created a ton of memorable moments for the audience. The best of all had to be Shawn Michaels winning the World Heavyweight Championship. It was a defining moment for the Elimination Chamber match.

WWE Elimination Chamber 2017 – John Cena vs Bray Wyatt vs AJ Styles vs The Miz vs Dean Ambrose vs Baron Corbin (WWE Championship)

The SmackDown Live scene was a stacked one in 2017. AJ Styles and John Cena competed in an all-time classic at the Royal Rumble, and that momentum carried forward into this Chamber match.

A chamber match was made using the new and improved design. The added height of the match allowed the participants more space to pull off some of the more creative spots in Elimination Chamber history. It gave the artists a larger canvas with which to paint.

A great factor working in favor of this match was the unpredictability. There was a good chance that at least three of the men would walk away as WWE Champions. It added a fantastic sense of intrigue to the match, which was compounded when we looked at how great the finish of this match was.

Having Cena, the champion, get knocked out before the final was a shocking move. It got a pop for Cena being eliminated. Still, then a growing thunder started when the crowd began to realize that fan favorite Bray Wyatt was going to realize his dream of winning his first world championship. A superb job from start to finish.

WWE Elimination Chamber 2019 – Daniel Bryan vs AJ Styles vs Jeff Hardy vs Randy Orton vs Samoa Joe vs Kofi Kingston (WWE Championship)

2019’s entry into Elimination Chamber lore is a story of redemption and a ‘Mania being brought upon WWE.

The intrigue began before this match started when Kofi Kingston took the sixth spot instead of Mustafa Ali. If some are to be believed, Ali was going to be the man getting a push toward WrestleMania, but an injury derailed that idea, and veteran Kofi Kingston was added.

Many didn’t expect much from him as Kingston was a WWE lifer who hadn’t received a significant push in years. Then, the unexpected happened.

The support for Kingston swelled to a fever pitch, and WWE began to listen. They pushed Kingston like a main event talent, and this match was the jumping-off point. Kofi and heel Daniel Bryan put on a fantastic closing segment.

It built Kingston as a stud and a man who could main event the biggest show of the year. The story of KofiMania began inside the Elimination Chamber.

Outside of the great finishing story, there was some great action between the four remaining participants. Styles, Hardy, Orton, and Joe had a bushel of history between them and used it to build a great string of action before it gave way to Daniel Bryan and Kofi Kingston doing their thing. It was the perfect way to use the chamber.

WWE Elimination Chamber 2019 – The Boss N’ Hug Connection vs Carmella & Naomi vs Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville vs Nia Jax & Tamina vs The IIconics vs The Riott Squad (Women’s Tag Team Championship)

The Women’s division, in 2019, had become deeper than it ever had been. It was popular and loaded with talent, so much so that they decided to bring back the once dormant WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. It was a bold move, but it initially paid off huge dividends when these 12 women put on a fantastic match to usher in a new era.

There was poetic chaos in the action that took place throughout the contest. It was the perfect type of car crash that fans had come to expect from an Elimination Chamber match. Bodies were being thrown all over the chamber as these women put on an absolute show for the audience. It was exactly the type of match to start the Tag Team Championships off on the right foot.

The oversized chamber allowed for some great spots involving the women scaling the cage. There was some great action on the cage and on top of the pods done in a way that their heavier male counterparts wouldn’t have been able to pull off. There was a new feel to the match, and it helped to create a great deal of excitement around the new women’s division.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on Elimination Chamber and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
