The titular match is the most famous of the gimmicks, but a smattering of others have been involved throughout the years.

In fact, on most Royal Rumble PLE’s one is hard-pressed to find a contest that doesn’t have some gimmick attached. These gimmick matches have been the selling point of the show.

Just because matches devoid of gimmicks are hard to find, doesn’t mean that they are some hidden gems. There have been a few instances, in Royal Rumble history, where straight-up wrestling matches have produced gold.

There have been matches hidden on the PLE that required no gimmicks and were the better for it. Below is a list of these matches.

The Rockers vs The Orient Express (WWE Royal Rumble 1991)

For those of a certain age, the greatness of this match will live burned in our minds. It was the opener of the 1991 Royal Rumble and overshadowed every other match on the night.

There wasn’t a great amount of history between the two teams. WWE wasn’t very high up in their tag team division, so they left this match alone. The teams were left to their own devices, and they produced a sprint of a match.

The pace was rampant during the 19-minute match time with the rest held there only to provide a small reprieve.

This was what a tag team match could be when done well. There was a great mix of chain wrestling, high-flying action, and crisp tag team wrestling. These men had the talent to put on a classic and that’s exactly what they did.

It’s just a shame it was lost in the shuffle of the Royal Rumble.

Edge vs Shawn Michaels (WWE Royal Rumble 2005)

When Shawn Michaels returned there were a ton of dream matchups that fans were wanting. No one had this one on their list, and everyone should have.

Michaels and Edge were the carbon copy of one another, which shouldn’t be shocking as Edge idolized HBK. They matched up incredibly well and tore the house down to start the show.

The catch-as-catch-can style shared by the two men made for a very even match. There was some great heel work from Edge while Shawn bumped his butt off to get the young star over.

Edge and HBK also put in some great character work in their build-up. Edge was the man who wanted to topple his childhood hero and had become disenchanted with Michaels.

It was a build that added so much hatred to the match, and we could feel it with every move. It was a match that made you want to care about it. It is baffling that WWE didn’t turn this into a much larger program.

The Hardy Boys vs MNM (WWE Royal Rumble 2007)

The Hardys & MNM were two of the best of their era. In a time when the tag team division was thin, to say the least, they were the shining stars. They made the division watchable with their fantastic matches. One of the best was their opener at The Royal Rumble.

It seems that tag matches are great ways to open the show, and this was a good example. The teams were used to working with one another and it led to a very comfortable match.

There were no awkward spots or botches to be seen. They worked the heel/face dynamic wonderfully and the crowd went nuts for Jeff Hardy’s hot tag.

Having The Hardy’s win was a great way to get the night started on the right foot. These were tag team wrestlers putting on a very undervalued match at the Royal Rumble.

Bray Wyatt vs Daniel Bryan (WWE Royal Rumble 2014)

It may not have been the match the crowd wanted, but it sure was the contest that they needed. The Daniel Bryan/Wyatt Family drama that had on one for a few weeks was captivating television.

When Bryan turned on his brethren it was one of the best Raw moments of the year, and it led us to a match at the Royal Rumble that everyone needed to see.

The physicality of this match was unmatched. Bryan and Wyatt beat the crap out of one another, and it had the feeling of a true hatred.

The feeling matched with great wrestling combines for a match that holds everyone’s attention from start to finish.

The crowd was very much in Bryan’s corner but even the raucous Pittsburgh fans couldn’t be upset with the finish. A Sister Abagail into the ringside barrier as a reversal to a suicide dive was brilliant and was an excellent exclamation point on the contest.

The New Foundation vs The Orient Express (WWE Royal Rumble 1992)

The 1992 Royal Rumble is known for a lot of things. Roddy Piper winning the IC Strap and Ric Flair going the distance are two big ones. They were huge stories, but they did overshadow a hidden gem of a tag team match that opened up the evening.

Owen Hart and Jim Neidhart made up The New Foundation that was taking on The Orient Express. It was a match where opponents didn’t have a ton of familiarity but were able to establish electric chemistry.

Everything they did with one another came so easily and looked seamless. There wasn’t a misstep between then. Which would have been easy considering the speed with which they ran through the match.

Hart was wonderful as the face in peril, making way for the powerhouse that was Neidhart. A simple story being told exceptionally well is still a great story, and that’s what we had here.

It was a great back and forth that had the new pairing of old friends emerge victorious.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – WWE – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on this and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
