Their ascension, born from the ashes of Jon Moxley’s Blackpool Combat Club, has all the potential to reach their former heights.

And it rightly should, as this comes off the full-time retirement of Bryan Danielson as far as in-ring action is concerned.

I’m a fan of this angle. As the following content will demonstrate, this is by no means a criticism of it or the company—far from it. I wanted to share ways that could enhance something exciting that could ripple through the locker room.

With Jon Moxley heading this run as the AEW World Champion, he seems ready to steer the company’s creative direction into more progressive territory.

Changes Already Made By the Death Riders

In the closing moments of All Out 2024 featured the babyfaces of the company rallying around the ring after chasing out Moxley’s gang, save for Wheeler Yuta. Since then, Yuta has rejoined their ranks, which stars PAC, Claudio Castagnoli, and Marina Shafir alongside Moxley.

While it seems like a step back into change for Yuta, he’s already changed by the ever-shifting tides. Rebuffing the Death Riders’ affections, he still partakes in their violence because that’s still all he knows. Doubt is already in his heart, but it’s clashing with what has molded him.

Orange Cassidy now sports black clothing and an attitude. There’s a fire there that wasn’t crackling its embers before. The company that brought him to highs and lows, successes and defeats, has required him to be more than he aspired to be.

Destiny, however, is prolonged. He clutches at his tangerine heart until it bears juice.

That’s not even counting the interferences from the top prospects thus far. “Hangman” Adam Page, “Switchblade” Jay White, and Christian Cage are all gunning for the top spot for different reasons. Reasons I’ll go into later.

Needless to say, AEW has a lot of paths to traverse on the way to crafting a creative reset. Here are some ways this story can accomplish this.

Avoiding the Usual Faction Trajectory

We’ve seen it all before, haven’t we? The band breaks up.

The Death Riders don’t have to become this, and they don’t have to become stale. The woes of the NWO, the confusion of the modern-day Bullet Club, and the dissolution of The New Day don’t have to be repeated here. (I’m actually a fan of The New Day’s developments as of December 2, 2024.)

Upon the Blackpool Combat Club’s inception, the goal shared by Bryan Danielson, Jon Moxley, and William Regal was to foster a hungrier environment. A place to ultimately elevate the younger talents to new heights.

This future wasn’t just about the gold around one’s waist. It’s about taking this job seriously, to go above and aspire for more than mediocrity.

The Death Riders’ mission is much the same. It’s just less forgiving. They’re tired of the jokes and the meandering. The whole roster needs to step up because Jon Moxley believes in it. What’s more, his crewmates believe in him and it.

That can set the Death Riders apart—a belief above the group and the tangible rewards of success. Even if they lose their belts, trophies, and opportunities for greatness, it’s the drive. How can a ship sail across deathly waters if the shipmates don’t do their part to keep it going?

Impact on Faces and Heels

As stated earlier, the Death Riders have attracted the ires of Orange Cassidy, Jay White, Adam Page, and Christian Cage. Each of them has their own reason, born of who they are. Cassidy’s is from a renewed sense of purpose.

Page’s is a vitriol for those who’d threaten the environment of AEW, as seen with Kenny Omega and CM Punk; it’s in his character to challenge threats like the Death Riders.

Jay White is alone because the Bang Bang Gang has been indisposed by terrors like the cruel faction. Christian Cage only wants the belt, and he has the contract to secure an opportunity when he wishes.

That’s depth. All men, starting from different places, converge on the same point. Of course, others have stepped up to become something more since the Death Riders wrought havoc. Daniel Garcia’s now the TNT Champion, whereas his friends in Private Party recently grabbed the AEW Tag Team Championship.

Aside from a casual mention from MJF blaming Adam Cole for how things are, there isn’t as much urgency otherwise. The House of Black remains dominant, and they can stand against the current AEW Trios Champions, Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta, and PAC.

Adam Copeland, watching at home while recovering from his injury, might have something to say about the Death Riders whenever he’s cleared to return.

The Hurt Syndicate, while already working on the same metrics, could clash with the team. With additional WWE history between Moxley and Bobby Lashley, this collision would make much sense.

Marina Shafir and the Women’s Division

Once lost in the shuffle, seen as an afterthought, the Moldovan supernova Marina Shafir’s MMA legitimacy lends itself to the grit and physical brutality of the Death Riders. She’s willing to get her hands dirty by disposing of any opposition to her team in the ring; there’s a lot that can be done with her.

With the now iconic image of Shafir suffocating Jay White with her Mother’s Milk hold, this Eastern European brings an aura of badassery that has completely morphed her into something new.

Unafraid to challenge men, this could reset the status quo and add intergender matches if AEW were to be so bold. Maybe add in her real-life husband Roderick Strong to add that extra level of drama to drive him and friends Adam Cole and Kyle O’Reilly.

If that’s not anyone’s cup of tea, that’s fine. There’s another division for her to conquer. With Moxley by her side, she’d stand out among the amazing yet lost women’s roster.

With champions desperate and arrogant to keep an undying clutch on their belts and powerful women, the clashes Shafir could create would make for a tense atmosphere.

And why should she be alone in this? AEW’s women’s division has some hidden talents that would jump into a similar role. Perhaps future free agents could have a healthy start as a member of the Death Riders. The sky is the limit.

Losses That Matter

AEW’s prided itself on wins and losses mattering since before it even had a wrestling event take place in 2019. Yeah, the rankings are dead and gone. That doesn’t mean that the consequences of failure stop there.

What I mean by making losses matter here is more so from a storyline perspective. To lose to the Death Riders should leave wrestlers to experience ramifications that shake who they are.

These people are making your work environment unfriendly and uncomfortable—what will you do about it? Fight back. Wipe that blood from your mouth, ice that bruise, and get back up.

Whether it is doubt or a drive to try again, wrestlers should be frothing at the mouth to regain control. These people are taking food off your plate and pushing you out of the way for your due meal. Fight.

Conclusion

AEW needs to evolve. The Death Riders know this. The product is still entertaining, but a new direction needs to be made. Sacrifices must happen. Mettles will be tested. Because in pro wrestling, the story never ends. Nothing truly ends.

Moxley, Castagnoli, Yuta, PAC, and Shafir are willing to carry the burden of seizing AEW and ensuring that no one becomes an Ozymandias, to mold the company in their image, yet they are, in effect, doing the same.

So who will step up? How will AEW make this angle different? The threat must be imminent, with no relenting the foot upon the necks of any wrestler bold enough to challenge the Death Riders.

Whatever the case is, I’m interested to see how AEW’s big storyline develops over the coming weeks, months, or even a year or more.

Because in every cycle, a paradigm shift needs another paradigm shift.

More From LWOS Pro Wrestling

Header photo – AEW – Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on this and other stories from around the world of wrestling as they develop.
