The body is subject to a controlled maiming, the mind is tested to endure the pain that is compounded by injury, and prolonged periods of travel make proper rest scarce.<\/p>\n<p>To succeed in wrestling requires a deep-seated passion for the business, where payouts are mere pittances outside of the highest level. The life of a road warrior, away from loved ones and the comfort of home as they make town to town, can severely impact one\u2019s mental state.<\/p>\n<p>For some, substances can provide the solace they seek until they can no longer chase that dragon.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, it snowballs into more potent means which yields its own personal and social issues.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike any other industry, wrestling has seen scores of premature deaths relating to its talent. Whether it be self-inflicted or accidental, the nature of these deaths leaves their families and the wrestling community as a whole reeling.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not to say some wrestlers don\u2019t get to live a full life, but headlines of talent dying young are all too common.<\/p>\n<p>When tragedies like this strike, it\u2019s up to the industry to pick itself up and pay tribute to those who\u2019ve given their time to the ring.<\/p>\n<p>In no particular order, here are some of professional wrestling\u2019s greatest memorial shows. given their time to the ring. Also woven into the event were highlights of Briscoe\u2019s career, including his Fight Without Honor against Cole at <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Final Battle 2014<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The main event saw ROH stalwart Christopher Daniels step to the plate in a losing effort against defending World Champion Claudio Castagnoli. The 1987 edition was in memoriam of David and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Archives\/1987\/04\/16\/The-body-of-professional-wrestler-Mike-Von-Erich-which\/7687545544000\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mike Von Erich<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, who passed away from suicide following over a year of health and legal troubles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Wrestling Observer Newsletter voted the company\u2019s exploitation of Mike\u2019s death as the Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic of that year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Mark Curtis Memorial Reunion<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While the wrestlers get the spotlight during a show, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">there are<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> dozens of actors behind the scenes <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">who<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> make the production work.<\/span> <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/LX3hnt3rFdY?si=uqPYG8-ZvOf2aMu9\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Brian Hildebrand<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, who also worked as Mark Curtis, infamously portrayed the Ninja Turtle knockoff <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/G22qfagAc_o?si=cJwV3hVaBTD8ptcR\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kowabunga <\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in Smoky Mountain Wrestling. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A gifted athlete, Hildebrand\u2019s unassuming looks led to him <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">being typecast<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> as a referee in ECW and WCW. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sadly, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/wrestlerdeaths.com\/brian-hildebrand-death\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hildebrand died of stomach and bowel cancer<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in September 1999. Featuring many of Curtis\u2019 old comrades from SMW, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a 2005 <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cagematch.net\/?id=1&amp;nr=54202\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reunion Memorial<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> show was promoted<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the proceeds going to the Children&#8217;s Miracle Network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A battle royal opened the show, with Big Dick Flannigan besting a dozen other competitors. Noted southern independent personality Count Grog came out of retirement, managing Timber the Lumberjack in a loss against Death &amp; Destruction\u2019s Roger Anderson. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Texas Heavyweight Championship was contested over<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> as Tom Prichard failed to retain the belt against Terry Taylor in the semi-main event. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The final match saw Mick Foley return to the ring for the first time in a year, teaming with Shane Douglas to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">get<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">win<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> over Al Snow and D\u2019Lo Brown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In his book \u201cCountdown to Lockdown\u201d Foley mentions the show as <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">being<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> one of his few house show outings throughout the 2000s. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He\u2019d later call Hildebrand one of his best friends in the industry and distinguish his passing as \u201chowever tragic, could not <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be linked<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to wrestling in any realistic way.\u201d <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Douglas recapped the event during <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">an episode of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> his \u201c<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/russosbrand.com\/2020\/11\/27\/shane-douglas-triple-threat-podcast-mark-curtis-memorial-reunion\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Triple Threat Podcast<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d webshow.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>WWF RAW: Rest In Peace, Brian Pillman<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Breaking into the wrestling business after a career in the NFL, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/F3ohFSckUL8?si=rFS1i4EkEN8e7HrQ\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Brian Pillman<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> made a name for himself for his unhinged persona in and out of the ring. Earning notoriety in WCW and ECW, Pillman was a year into a run with the WWF when he <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was scheduled<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for a match at <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In Your House: Badd Blood<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hours before <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">belltime<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, hotel staff found Pillman dead of a heart attack, the result of a previously unknown cardiological condition and substance abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On that week\u2019s broadcast of Raw, McMahon opened the episode as the arena fell silent as <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Ng2Nw5wfq18?si=kGvIB_Gojj6OFmUk\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">salute was made<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in honor of Pillman<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The first promo saw Shawn Michaels and Triple H, flanked by Rick Rude and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chyna<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> call out the Hart Foundation. WWF Champion Bret Hart would refer to Michaels as \u201cnothing more than a degenerate,\u201d which would morph into the D-Generation X faction name. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Triple H went over Hart in a count-out victory for the main event, setting the stage for Hart and Michaels\u2019 confrontation at Survivor Series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In his <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/e-fZWHVI2Eo?si=axv9uG-duoUboJVF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">first appearance on network television<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Kane made quick work of the Hardy Boyz <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">after<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> which Paul Bearer mocked the Undertaker.
