{"id":127157,"date":"2024-09-25T08:00:46","date_gmt":"2024-09-25T12:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/?p=127157"},"modified":"2024-09-24T14:21:19","modified_gmt":"2024-09-24T18:21:19","slug":"aew-five-year-anniversary-creating-aew","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/09\/25\/aew-five-year-anniversary-creating-aew\/","title":{"rendered":"AEW Five Year Anniversary: Creating AEW"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>All Elite Wrestling (AEW)<\/strong> is approaching its fifth anniversary! <em><strong>AEW Dynamite<\/strong><\/em> debuted on <strong>TNT<\/strong> on October 2, 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, you could say the rest is history, or maybe I should say they have continued to make history. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AEW took the wrestling world by storm!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was one of the first promotions to compete against <strong>WWE<\/strong> in comparable ratings, creating a new atmosphere for wrestling fans.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Tony Khan<\/strong> took a considerable risk by launching All Elite Wrestling, but ultimately, the audience gave it a chance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can\u2019t speak for Khan but I imagine this is one of his best decisions.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, All Elite Wrestling has grown exponentially and doesn\u2019t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has quickly become global, featuring phenomenal talent from all over the world. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s examine AEW&#8217;s rich history and how it rose rapidly as a company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many components make it unique compared to other wrestling companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Creation of AEW<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It all started with Tony Khan, a man born into money because of his successful father, <strong>Shahid Khan<\/strong>. Tony used his money to invest in professional wrestling, which he grew up as a fan of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khan took it upon himself to create All Elite Wrestling, the second-largest wrestling promotion in the world. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rumblings of this promotion began towards the end of 2018 and into 2019. Khan became in contact with a few of the hottest indie wrestlers at the time: <strong>Cody Rhodes<\/strong>, <strong>The Young Bucks<\/strong>, and <strong>Kenny Omega<\/strong>, who all became Executive Vice Presidents of the company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the company announced those four were EVPs, everyone knew this would be a prominent wrestling promotion. Many people debated whether they wanted to see them in <strong>WWE<\/strong> because WWE has a history of burying or changing outstanding wrestlers but it was the only prominent wrestling promotion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That wasn\u2019t anyone\u2019s worry anymore when they were shown to be part of AEW.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Meet Tony Khan: The Billionaire Behind All Elite Wrestling | Forbes\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QLPrjJqDXMc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first AEW event and pay-per-view was <em><strong>Double or Nothing 2019<\/strong><\/em>. This made their mark in the wrestling world, bringing many familiar faces to wrestling fans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Double or Nothing 2019<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, Tony Khan created the company, but we all know that if it weren\u2019t for the wrestlers and everyone else involved, it wouldn\u2019t be what it is now. It took a team to create and fight for AEW, and they picked some of the best players.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They made a bang by showcasing their roster of wrestlers for the first time at <em>Double or Nothing 2019.<\/em> All of the EVPs wrestled on the card, as they are part of the roster, along with stars such as <strong>Chris Jericho<\/strong>, <strong>MJF,<\/strong> <strong>Britt Baker<\/strong>, <strong>Hikaru Shida<\/strong>, <strong>Dustin Rhodes<\/strong>, <strong>Pac<\/strong>, <strong>Billy Gunn<\/strong>, <strong>Jon Moxley<\/strong>, and many more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With these stars and the intense matches created, AEW may have risen to the levels it did so fast. That first event showed the company&#8217;s potential and that they could take this company to lengths people wouldn&#8217;t think imaginable because of the immense force of WWE.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Exclusive AEW Double or Nothing Post Show Footage\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YpBt_NNGsFA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only four months later, on October 2, 2019, AEW debuted its weekly show, <em>AEW Dynamite<\/em>, which airs every Wednesday night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>It&#8217;s Wednesday, You Know What That Means&#8230;<\/h3>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It&#39;s Wednesday. It was only the beginning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What pulled the fans in was that the wrestlers have much to do with the storylines they are involved in. It\u2019s noticeable in their performance when they like the story they tell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It makes it so easy for the fans to fall into the kayfabe.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New types of matches, along with more freedom among the wrestlers, include more violent matches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would say AEW is geared more towards a hardcore wrestling audience, while WWE is the PG show if anyone wants something less graphic. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AEW has had insane match stipulations, from the classic stadium stampede to an exploding barbed-wire death match.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They consistently keep the audience on their toes and put on pay-per-view-worthy matches every week.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Company Partnerships<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many wrestlers coming to AEW had made a name for themselves among companies such as <strong>Ring of Honor (ROH)<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW)<\/strong>. There would be many crossovers before any of the wrestlers signed with AEW.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, <strong>Jay White<\/strong> made his AEW debut in February of 2022 on <em>Dynamite<\/em>, but White didn\u2019t sign an AEW contract until April 2023. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having these wrestlers cross over without being signed opened doors for new and unique matches while helping publicize these other wrestlers and their promotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t common for large companies because they typically sign contracts for so many years, so they can\u2019t compete elsewhere. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 2022, Tony Khan announced that he had purchased Ring of Honor and would continue to keep the company alive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This purchase let fans know that some of their favorite wrestlers would still be in the company. It also allowed even more wrestlers to crossover from ROH to AEW and vice versa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AEW x NJPW Combine Forces for the Announcement that Rocked the World | AEW Dynamite, 4\/20\/22\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EXArH86lA8E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a good relationship with New Japan and many of its wrestlers, both companies came up with the idea of doing a combined pay-per-view event, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/06\/28\/history-of-aew-x-njpw-forbidden-door\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong><em>Forbidden Door<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, where the companies cross <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/07\/07\/aew-njpw-2024-forbidden-door-media-scrum-breakdown\/\" target=\"_self\">\u201cthe forbidden door\u201d<\/a> into each other&#8217;s realm.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first <em>Forbidden Door<\/em> event was held in 2022 and has continued to be an annual PPV event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This past year, they expanded the event to include other wrestling promotions. <em>Forbidden Door 2024<\/em> consisted of AEW, NJPW, <strong>Stardom<\/strong>, and <strong>CMLL<\/strong> wrestlers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like always, the show will leave you speechless. It will be exciting to see any more collaborations in the future!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we approach five years of <em>AEW Dynamite<\/em>, it is incredible to see the progress they have made over the years. It&#8217;s genuinely impeccable from acquiring wrestling legends such as <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/08\/20\/cm-punks-return-to-professional-wrestling-three-years-later\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>CM Punk<\/strong><\/a> (even though he left, he returned to wrestling in AEW), <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/08\/28\/dream-matches-revisited-5-men-aews-bryan-danielson-must-wrestle-again\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Bryan Danielson<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Sting,<\/strong> etc., to simply having engaging stories and matches and weekly putting on never-before-seen performances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will be exciting to see where AEW is in another five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>More From LWOS Pro Wrestling<\/h3>\n<p><em>Header photo \u2013 AEW \u2013 Stay tun<\/em><em>ed to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\" target=\"_self\">Last Word on Pro Wrestling<\/a>\u00a0for more on this and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
