Has anyone ever told you this? <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wrestlers themselves?<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Other fans? Usually with a tone of ingratitude and a side of resentment. You <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">don\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> know what you got until <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> gone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">isn\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to dispute that there is some truth within this idea. I agree we should<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">enjoy the ride<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to some extent, as <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Will Gray<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> said in his article <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/05\/18\/whats-next-for-wwe-champion-cody-rhodes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Next for <\/span><\/a><strong><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/05\/18\/whats-next-for-wwe-champion-cody-rhodes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cody Rhode<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">s<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Fans can be fickle. We can always find things to complain about. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Faults that <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">should be fixed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a constant on social media. But with top babyface champions, is it exclusively our fault?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To some degree, there is almost a historic self-fulfilling prophecy in this belief that once the fighting babyface completes his <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">chase,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">gets the championship, fans turn on them. There is precedent for this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Shawn <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Michaels\u2019<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> first run in 1996 felt regressive <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">given<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">HBK\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> prior work as a heel. <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">John Cena<\/span><\/strong> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">post<\/span> <em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">WrestleMania <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">21<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> became comparable to <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hulk Hogan<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> regarding incivility. <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kofi Kingston<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> post KofiMania felt like a placeholder. <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Drew McIntyre<\/span><\/strong> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">during<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the Pandemic <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Era<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> did what he <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">could,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> but likewise became a generic babyface champion with a sword.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> not just a <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">WWE<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> problem. <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">AEW<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> experienced this issue with<\/span> <strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hangman<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Adam Page<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Not all of these runs resulted in the champions <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">being booed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, but <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">some fans&#8217; perceptions, enjoyment, and investment in these <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">wrestlers\u2019<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> characters were knocked<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For Cody Rhodes,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> this fear of the fans turning on him at some point could still be a reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Blame Game <\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dijak<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> posted less than 24 hours after <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wrestlemania XL<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the following, it was less prophetic and more capturing a mood\/fear: <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">won\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> be tomorrow, it <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">won\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> be next week, it <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">won\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> be next month, might not even be next year\u2026 but one day you guys are gonna turn so hard on Cody and boo his ass out of the building <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> when that day comes all <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019m<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> going to do is reference this post and tell you I was right<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dijak<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">X<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Almost immediately, some fans rallied around this idea. Becoming defenders of Cody Rhodes and ready on social media to take any naysayers who criticized Cody to task. Yet news that post-Mania, Rhodes did not have any big set plans until<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> SummerSlam<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> created some unease. Perhaps a worry of repeating previous patterns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Another wrestling clich\u00e9 reveals more about this post-chase blues period than the dismissive<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">fans are fickle<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">brush-off. Considering it might reframe how it&#8217;s poor booking rather than us, the fanbase, that causes a disconnection from the top fighting babyface.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">don\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> think we are the tail-wagging dog as many would like to claim. We as fans <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">don\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> control changes to the wrestling characters we invest in. Usually, the booking presents us with someone we can relate to. Yet sometimes, when they win the big one, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> not us who changes first. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> often them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Money is in the Chase<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In those previous babyface champions I mentioned, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a great deal of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> time, effort <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> most importantly characterization went into building these wrestlers into top stars fans could invest in. As fans, we <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were given<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a hook to grip us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Underdog stories of achieving a childhood dream and or offering us, their supporters to vicariously live our dreams through them. Our heroes overcome the establishment, pigeon-holing, external barriers, or internal struggles like mental health. Experiences we can relate to. Things many of us struggle with in real life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Like great movies or books, the protagonists of their stories went through a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">difficult<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, well-thought-out journey to face their big bad. The drama and tension were high. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Adrenaline pumping.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> They win. But the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">n\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Adrenaline\u2026 Dump <\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With films, once the story <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ends<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> it. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Yet, when the story never ends in wrestling<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, things move to the next story<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But once you climb that highest mountain, the only logical way is down. Pessimistically, yes, but it <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">doesn\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> have to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There are<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> various issues in the booking and presentation <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> have undermined the conquering hero.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> All of them, like an adrenaline dump, can leave a babyface champion reduced. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Flushing<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> out some of the elements that got fans behind them in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Character is Lost or Changes <\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When a fighting <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">babyface\u2019s<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">champion\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> character <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is primarily built<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> around being an underdog, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">what\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> left when they are <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">now<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> on top? If they remain the underdog, like <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rey Mysterio<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> during his WWE World Heavyweight Championship reign, the fluke or skin-of-your-teeth victories can undermine the reign. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Making<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the champion look paper-thin rather than made of steel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Similarly, if their character becomes the fighting babyface champion, like Kofi Kingston<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the reign can feel formulaic<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Defending the championship is a trope, not a personality trait. Without either tweaks, changes, or connective threads back to what got the fans invested in the first place, the babyface becomes a hollow shell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In AEW, with<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hangman<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Adam Page, the chase to become the AEW World Champion was strong. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">character\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> depiction of real-life <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">issues of mental health (an analysis of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> you can find<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/08\/05\/aews-hangman-adam-page-and-mental-health-imposter-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> here<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">)<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">seemed to disappear once Page was champion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The anxiety and mental struggle are not as prevalent. Despite some <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">strong<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and fun championship defenses against <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bryan Danielson, Lance Archer, <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Adam Cole<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the character lost connection with the audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Becoming a parody of a fighting babyface champion dented <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">MJF\u2019s<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> World Championship <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reign,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> despite the turn being necessary in many regards (which you can read about <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/01\/03\/mjf-aew-championship-reign\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">). Like Page and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">like<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> other world champions elsewhere, the transition removed the aspects of <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">MJF\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> character that made fans fall in love with the character because\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You Changed<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Some babyface characters<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">once<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> they win the big one <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">suddenly<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> shift towards a stereotypical character that completely changes their dynamic.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> The concept that being the world champion means you must act differently,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">like a world champio<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">n<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> becomes a corporate suit or like playing a role. The character becomes the representation of the company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">John Cena went from being from the streets and edgy and relatable to being a sanitized, kid-friendly brand whose comparisons to Hogan went beyond not losing clean. Cena became the establishment and WWE itself. Although still over with some, he appeared a<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u201c<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">sellout<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Future world champions like Drew McIntyre and <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Roman Reigns<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in part were pressed into a <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Vince McMahon-shaped<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> mould. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the story development few want because it can feel like betrayal. Especially during the late 2000s and 2010s when the establishment was not serving the fans <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">want<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> we wanted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Changing what works in any <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">capacity,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> without adding any new layers or depth is creative strip-mining.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Weak\/ Samey Follow-Up Stories<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Post-chase, the follow-up story\/stories can feel either placeholder, generic, or their designs obvious. Repetition of one of <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">WWE\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> most successful post-chase storylines is the most obvious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After defeating Shawn Michaels, <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Steve <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Austin\u2019s<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> battle with his boss gave the Rattlesnake a multi-layered story arc that eclipsed his story arc. Set up before <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">WrestleMania XIV<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the story of the worker vs his employer resonated. It connected with the cultural zeitgeist. More importantly, it lent to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Austin\u2019s<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">character\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> strengths and appeal in a way that generated heat and drama.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Subsequent attempts failed beyond how obvious the ploy was. The stories leeched the wrestlers of character. The person who was supposed to represent us, the fans, becoming a puppet and mascot for the company felt like a betrayal. Fans rejected this because it was transparent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Moved<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Raw<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> despite his rise taking place on <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Smackdown<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, John<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cena\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> first overarching feud was with the authority figure, <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Eric Bischoff<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Represented in the ring for months by <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chris Jericho<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kurt Angle<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, these opponents failed to get Cena over with some fans because of the stark differences in their abilities. It backfired and forced hardcore fans to associate Cena with Hogan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When re-used with Roman Reigns to try and make him into the new John Cena years later, fans rejected this lazy and anarchic story device. Years under Vince <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">McMahon\u2019s<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">creative<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> where <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">this story structure was replicated<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> with a wrestling character who embodied the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ideas of the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">establishment<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">obvious<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and disingenuous<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Boring<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and old rope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At the same time, other reigns struggled with a lack of overarching direction. Kofi <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kingston\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> reign involved a rotating cast of challengers of the month. Each offered little threat or no long-term reason for considering that Kofi might lose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Artificial drama and stakes, or the lack of these, meant little drama.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fickle for The Drama <\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wrestling is part sport but part soap opera. Currently, for WWE, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> clear to fans that if the storylines, like <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Judgement Day<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> saga with <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Liv Morgan, Dominic Mysterio<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rhea <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ripley<\/span> <\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">keep hitting the spot, the flaws (as discussed <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/07\/23\/liv-morgan-and-rhea-ripley-why-wwe-fans-dont-care-about-its-flaws\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">) are ignorable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Beyond wrestling, we <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are invested<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in drama and tension. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> what drives good stories. Remove that chase drama once the babyface <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is done<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, of<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">course<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> like metal to a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">magnet<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> we are going to be drawn elsewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Yes, a fighting champion can fight and defend the championship repeatedly. The issue with this is it gets old fast. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> been<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> done before. Likewise, diminishing returns become a historic issue for future champions. Paradoxically <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">sometimes<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the more a title <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is defended<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the more predictable the outcome can be. Therefore, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the less<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> drama.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Where we get drama comes mainly from the actions of the heels. When looking at the hottest feud of the summer in WWE, Drew McIntyre vs. <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">CM Punk<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (you can read my Match Point guide to the match <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/07\/31\/match-point-cm-punk-vs-drew-mcintyre\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">), both men have acted as justified heels. Heels can and do more <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">interesting<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> things than babyfaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Booking a smart babyface in the modern age is difficult. Heels have always had more room to color outside of the lines. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">More ways to win.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> They can go places the babyface <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">can\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Their stories become <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">more interesting<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to follow. More dramatic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">babyface\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> story is complete, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> an eventuality that someone will beat them. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Most<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> likely a heel. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> somewhat natural we move on to who might be next. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> made<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">easier<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> when the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">booking of<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> babyface is lacking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When the thrill has gone once the chase <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is done<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> reasons to stick <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">around<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> past the peak <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">aren\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> compelling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We\u2019re<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> fickle <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">we<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> follow the drama.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Breaking the Cycle- WWE<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Both<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> WWE and AEW have done <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a good<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> job this year of ensuring that their fighting babyface champions have not fallen into these traps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Have fans turned on Rhodes? Not really. Business metrics have been positive. Crowd responses have been strong. Responses to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rhodes\u2019<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> promos and matches have been positive. Rhodes has retained much of his presentation. While Cody has had self-contained feuds with <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">AJ Styles<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Logan Paul<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in between the much larger narrative of <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Bloodline<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Cody has found a way to make things work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A big part of this might be patience and trust in the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">process of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u201c<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Paul Levesque Er<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019ve<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> written elsewhere about how <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Triple H<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> has fulfilled fans&#8217; wishes (<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/05\/07\/wish-fulfilment-how-right-now-wwe-delivers-what-fans-wanted\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">). The fact that reports suggested there were no <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">major<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> plans for Rhodes until <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SummerSlam<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and the return of Roman Reigns sowed concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, WWE fans are being re-trained to expect <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">longer<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> title reigns and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to expect<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> big moments on the big four PPVs. Cody Rhodes retaining his aura, presentation <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the qualities that fans have invested in has kept him <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">as<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a strong champion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The desire to see the Roman <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reigns\u2019<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> redemption story may <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">at<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> some stage <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">eclipse<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cody\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> title reign, but that <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">doesn\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> mean Cody has failed or <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been failed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. For the first time in years, WWE feels like a place where many top main event stars can represent the brand. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Not just some singular chosen one.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Course Correction- AEW <\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Criticism aimed at AEW is pernicious and something <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019ve<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> analyzed both sides of <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/06\/17\/aews-polarising-present-aew-is-under-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Fan dissatisfaction at the presentation of Swerve Strickland as the world champion has been addressed. However, before his ascension, some changes in his character were made to avoid the mistakes of <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">AEW\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> past (as discussed <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/03\/06\/imminent-aew-world-championship-reign-swerve-strickland\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There were teething problems. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Both <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">real<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">bad<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> faith <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> both champion and creative <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">have addressed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> The biggest is finding the balance between Swerve as a babyface and a heel, given his past actions. The fact that Heelish streak has not been ignored, plastered over like a plot hole, or dressed up has meant Swerve retains the aura and personality that resulted in his rise to the top.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Swerve in interviews, when on screen, in-ring, and on the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">microphone<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> has become his champion rather than playing an expected role. One that a champion received as a babyface but who is justifiable and ruthless in mindset. Swerve defeating <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Will Ospreay<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> silenced claims of Swerve as a transitional champion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The prospect <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">beats<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">retires<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Bryan Danielson at <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">All In<\/span><\/em> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> real.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The fact fans are eager to see Swerve vs. Page IV with proper build shows how <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">fans<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are invested<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in their stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">aren\u2019t<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> fickle as fans.
