The Pattern of Misinformation <\/strong><\/h3>\n

This weekend, <\/span>Stephanie Vaquer<\/span><\/strong> achieved her childhood dream of joining <\/span>WWE<\/span><\/strong>. Several years ago, Vaquer <\/span>in<\/span> one <\/span>interview<\/span> talked about being 14 years old and wanting to see <\/span>Rey Mysterio<\/span><\/strong> at a WWE live event. Mysterio is <\/span>Stephanie\u2019s<\/span> idol. When her mother said they did not have the money to attend, Vaquer sold hot dogs in the hope of being able to participate. However, the show sold out.<\/span><\/p>\n

WWE was always the dream. Various sources have stated as much. <\/span>Dave Meltzer<\/span><\/strong> and <\/span>Thunder Rosa<\/span><\/strong> to <\/span>Luchablog<\/span><\/strong> have noted this. Some <\/span>like<\/span> Luchablog<\/span> have felt the need to repeat this in the face of misinformation.<\/span><\/p>\n

News surrounding how Vaquer left <\/span>CMLL <\/span><\/strong>and<\/span> NJPW<\/span><\/strong> without dropping her CMLL World <\/span>Women\u2019s<\/span> Championship has stirred discussion. Inevitably, discord related to AEW, where Vaquer wrestled her most high-profile match in America against <\/span>Mercedes Mon\u00e9<\/span><\/strong>. News that AEW <\/span>wasn\u2019t<\/span> even in conversation has been a lightning rod for discord.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many fans are happy for Vaquer and look forward to what she can do in <\/span>NXT<\/span><\/strong>. If not sooner, <\/span>on<\/span> the main roster. Yet others in the binary-inducing world of social media, where the algorithms encourage extreme hot takes and <\/span>conspiracies,<\/span> have spread other ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n

It highlights a familiar and common pattern <\/span>that\u2019s<\/span> emerged and is likely to repeat with other female wrestlers over time. <\/span>It will likely not go away due to<\/span> a <\/span>looming investigation into WWE <\/span>by the Department of Justice<\/span>.<\/span> Some folks try to turn the limited information <\/span>taken<\/span> from news sites and refashion it into moralistic takes to say that their preferred wrestling company is better <\/span>than the other<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vaquer Exit and Not Choosing AEW <\/strong><\/h3>\n

These issues of asserting moralism occur on both sides of the divide. Sometimes joking, but in the case of Vaquer, invoking an extremely serious and disturbing event in the new WWE <\/span>signee’s<\/span> life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Various posters on <\/span>Reddit <\/span><\/strong>and <\/span>X<\/span><\/strong> and elsewhere have brought into focus that in March 2023, <\/span>Vaquer\u2019s<\/span> former boyfriend, <\/span>AAA<\/span><\/strong> wrestler<\/span>\u00a0El Cuatrero<\/span><\/strong>, was arrested for attempted femicide (attempted murder). El Cuatrero is still in prison in Mexico. However, in December 2023, various wrestlers protested for El <\/span>Cuatrero\u2019s<\/span> release on bail.<\/span><\/p>\n

The narrative<\/span> these posters have spread <\/span>is<\/span> that Vaquer would not work with AEW because of \u00a0<\/span>RUSH<\/span><\/strong> and <\/span>Dralistico<\/span><\/strong>, former CMLL wrestlers who attended this protest.<\/span> Information about the protest is limited. Some photos appear online <\/span>and<\/span> I could not distinguish either man. It <\/span>doesn\u2019t<\/span> mean they <\/span>weren\u2019t<\/span> there, but with conspiracy theories, the lack of proof <\/span>just<\/span> works as proof.<\/span><\/p>\n

The implication is a repetition of an insidious narrative <\/span>that\u2019s<\/span> appeared multiple times attacking<\/span> AEW over the years. AEW hires despicable wrestlers or personalities who have either committed or condoned horrible crimes. <\/span>It\u2019s<\/span> different from the other ways AEW has been <\/span>under attack<\/span> by the cottage industry of detractors (which <\/span>I\u2019ve<\/span> discussed <\/span>here<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m<\/span> not going to discuss this further for two reasons. <\/span>I\u2019m<\/span> not a legal expert <\/span>and<\/span> I believe talking about it is better to be honest with a lack of knowledge that potentially harmfully assert opinion as fact. Second, when it comes to discussing women who have suffered abuse or violence from men, regardless of legal confirmation, they are more than victims. <\/span>It\u2019s<\/span> something<\/span> I\u2019ve<\/span> touched on elsewhere when discussing <\/span>Ashley <\/span>Massaro\u2019s<\/span><\/strong> legacy and impact (<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>).<\/span> It reduces the women to pieces in <\/span>a game of<\/span> asserting which company is better.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flaws in The Good and Evil Argument<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What such stories also do is<\/span> reframe <\/span>women\u2019s<\/span> stories around men and reduce their autonomy.<\/span> By recentring<\/span> it on Rush, Dralistico, and AEW<\/span>, it<\/span> focuses on portraying them as bad guys in the binary work of wrestling.<\/span> It ignores the obvious logical issues. The glaring <\/span>issue<\/span> is that Rush and <\/span>Dralistico\u2019s<\/span> brother, <\/span>Dragon <\/span>Lee<\/span><\/strong> is a WWE wrestler. It takes one <\/span>wrestler\u2019s<\/span> dream and reduces it into a convenient weapon to beat on AEW.<\/span><\/p>\n

The binary landscape of social media encourages and pushes some fans to two sides <\/span>with<\/span> a <\/span>wide<\/span> gulf between them that makes dehumanization easier. Hot takes and wild speculation grab attention. The algorithm encourages views and discord, and it can balloon from there. People become reduced.<\/span><\/p>\n

For some, <\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> either WWE good or AEW evil, or vice versa. One is <\/span>wrestling\u2019s<\/span> saviour <\/span>and<\/span> the other is <\/span>wrestling\u2019s<\/span> devil. There <\/span>isn\u2019t<\/span> room for nuance or the reality of actual complications. Things get reduced to fit the tribalistic war. One side has to be better than the other. Morality has become another battle in the war. \u00a0Perhaps in part because of <\/span>wrestling’s<\/span> incredibly murky and morally dubious history. Allegations against <\/span>Vince McMahon<\/span><\/strong> still linger. Yet unfounded speculation is dangerous when wielded as fact.<\/span><\/p>\n

Political Moralism and the Response <\/strong><\/h3>\n

But this moralism <\/span>does go<\/span> two ways and beyond abuse to the concept of how wrestlers handle<\/span> \u201c<\/span>busines<\/span>s<\/span>.\u201d<\/span> When picking a side, criticism is inevitable for any wrestler. Some more fans have likewise taken issue with Vaquer for <\/span>the way she has<\/span> left CMLL and <\/span>NJPW <\/span><\/strong>before completing her dates and dropping her championships.<\/span><\/p>\n

The truth of what happened or what <\/span>Vaquer\u2019s<\/span> relationship with CMLL and NJPW is unknown, based on snippets of information. Speculation and opinion <\/span>are used<\/span> to fill the void. For some, the <\/span>possibility,<\/span> that<\/span> Vaquer has burnt her bridges with CMLL, NJPW, and AEW deserves criticism and comparison.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>sentiment,<\/span> if she <\/span>signed<\/span> with AEW, they would have let her do this. Some praising<\/span> Willow Nightingale<\/span><\/strong> for winning the CMLL World <\/span>Women’s<\/span> championship have likewise framed it as a win for AEW, as much as for Willow herself.\u00a0<\/span>This<\/span> likewise undermines <\/span>Nightingale\u2019s<\/span> moment.<\/span><\/p>\n

For some, the portrayal of Vaquer then becomes that of a backstabber. <\/span>Betraying<\/span> the companies who helped her gain attention. Or outright blaming WWE for making Stephanie do it. <\/span>This<\/span> fits with the critical narrative of WWE as arrogant and bullying. In either case, <\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> oversimplifying.<\/span><\/p>\n

Retaliating, some have then responded by bringing <\/span>Vaquer\u2019s<\/span> Forbidden Door<\/span><\/em><\/strong> opponent into the spotlight. <\/span>To make an odd comparison to justify <\/span>Vaquer\u2019s<\/span> actions.<\/span> The reason is <\/span>extremely<\/span> flimsy. Mercedes WWE walked out, which <\/span>was<\/span> worse than Vaquer leaving CMLL.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mon\u00e9 is the female equivalent of <\/span>The Elite<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span>An<\/span> easy<\/span> scapegoat and target for some anti-AEW fans. Like The Elite, there will be nothing she can do right for these fans. Despite very different contexts and personal and political reasoning, Conveniently, these takes also ignore that <\/span>Naomi <\/span><\/strong>also<\/span> walked out and left her blameless. She did rejoin WWE. <\/span>It\u2019s<\/span> a strange and demeaning comparison of two talented wrestlers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Differences in How Men’s and Women’s Wrestlers are Discussed<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Some readers might be thinking this is already too<\/span> \u201c<\/span>wok<\/span>e<\/span>\u201d.<\/span> Or jumping to generalizations like<\/span> \u201c<\/span>You <\/span>can\u2019t<\/span> say\/write anything these days without it <\/span>being misinterprete<\/span>d<\/span>\u201d.<\/span> They might automatically go to a binary, oppositional defensive stance. <\/span>I<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2019ll<\/span> explain later why comparisons in wrestling are fine, natural, and a <\/span>huge<\/span> part of our fandom. The issue <\/span>isn\u2019t<\/span> a misinterpretation of <\/span>what\u2019s<\/span> said<\/span> on the <\/span>surface,<\/span> but more about the underlying interpretation and association of what is <\/span>being spotlighted<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vaquer is an accomplished and acclaimed wrestler who is benefitting from the <\/span>reshaping of the wrestling landscape due to competition between WWE and AEW<\/span><\/a>. Yet these takes with <\/span>women\u2019s<\/span> wrestlers, whether Vaquer, Mercedes, <\/span>Liv Morgan, Rhea Ripley,<\/span> \u201c<\/span>Timeless Toni Storm<\/span><\/strong>, and others <\/span>only<\/span> carry on a subtly type of misogyny.<\/span><\/p>\n

Comparisons and moralism happen with male wrestlers also. There is binary and <\/span>negative<\/span> discord around wrestlers such as <\/span>Adam Copeland<\/span><\/strong> and <\/span>CM Punk<\/span><\/strong>. Their crimes likewise go to the other company. Again, <\/span>you\u2019re<\/span> either a saint or a devil. Obviously, with <\/span>Punk<\/span> there are other complications related to his past, even before he spoke on the <\/span>MMA Hour<\/span><\/a><\/strong> or continues to take shots at AEW.<\/span><\/p>\n

The difference, as I discussed earlier this year when talking about the misogyny of the past (<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>), is women get it worse. Punk or Copeland did or did not get insulted for their gender or genitals. They <\/span>don\u2019t<\/span> receive death threats or the threat of violence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Adam Copeland has <\/span>been mocked<\/span> for being an overenthusiastic flag-waver for AEW. Contrastingly, Mon\u00e9 talking about how great AEW is <\/span>met by personal attacks on her and her wrestling ability and assertions of how much political power she has as<\/span>\u00a0if she were a female <\/span>Hulk Hogan<\/span><\/strong>, which memes of exist. No one is giving that much or extreme hate to Copeland.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Issue of Reducing Female Wrestlers<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Ultimately, the issue of reducing female wrestlers to pieces in some <\/span>moral <\/span>and<\/span> political game is one-upmanship. It strips these women of their individuality and autonomy. <\/span><\/p>\n

Their stories <\/span>become<\/span> not about themselves, their hard work, or their <\/span>struggles,<\/span> but instead about the battle for supremacy <\/span>in the <\/span>war<\/span> between WWE and AEW.<\/span> It’s<\/span> taken focus away from what matters ironically the most to us as fans, the wrestling.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, things beyond the world of wrestling in terms of real-life abuses and crimes committed against women are more important than anything that takes place in the ring. H<\/span><\/p>\n

owever, in instances like the use of a dark part of <\/span>Vaquer’s<\/span> personal life, her experience has been manipulated and used for a petty and trivial reason. To assert one wrestling company is better than another. <\/span>This<\/span> has happened before. It likely will not be the last.<\/span><\/p>\n

To change this <\/span>fans<\/span> need to consider such claims carefully<\/span>. Research<\/span> before reacting to emotive claims that deal with such <\/span>difficult<\/span> issues. No one is immune from being influenced by misinformation. Or from passing it on also. <\/span><\/p>\n

Fans also need to call out these claims. Block rather than engage with such accounts or threads. More importantly, listen to <\/span>a promote<\/span> the accounts and takes of female wrestlers. <\/span>It’s<\/span> their story to tell.<\/span><\/p>\n
