Cody Rhodes has never wrestled an &#8220;I Quit&#8221; match, but his brother <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dustin Rhodes <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">defeated I Quit match king<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Terry Funk<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in one in WCW.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Styles has the first-hand experience to make him a favorite at <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/06\/13\/preview-wwe-clash-at-the-castle-6-15-24-card-time-watch\/\" target=\"_self\">Clash at the Castle<\/a>. <\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But Rhodes has insider knowledge from his brother.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Here, we take a look at the history of one of pro wrestling&#8217;s rarest match types the &#8220;I Quit&#8221; match.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I Quit&#8221;: The First Matches <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In 1970, <strong>Paul Jones <\/strong>and <strong>Nelson Royal<\/strong> defeated <strong>Ole<\/strong> and <strong>Gene Anderson<\/strong> in an &#8220;I Quit&#8221; match for the NWA Atlantic Coast Tag Team Championship. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The &#8220;I Quit&#8221; stipulation was common in 70s NWA. Everyone from <strong>Dusty Rhodes<\/strong> and <strong>Terry Funk<\/strong> to <strong>Kevin von Erich, Barry Windham,<\/strong> and<strong> Terry Gordy <\/strong>competed in them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But it was <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tully Blanchard<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> vs. <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Magnum TA <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that put the match on the map. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In 1985, Tully Blanchard and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2023\/06\/07\/magnum-ta-dark-side-ring\/\" target=\"_self\">Magnum TA<\/a> were embroiled in such a heated rivalry that a cage match was set for <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Starrcade 85<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. But it was deemed an extra stipulation was needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The &#8220;I Quit&#8221; stipulation was assigned to the match for the NWA US Championship.<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Earl Hebner<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was the referee. With no pinfalls or submissions, Hebnar&#8217;s sole job was to recoil the microphone cable and blow into the mic to test it still worked after Blanchard had pounded it into Magnum&#8217;s bloody forehead. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The key learning from this early &#8220;I Quit&#8221; match was not to hold the microphone at crotch level before forcing it down your opponent&#8217;s throat and demanding he quits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Magnum won the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">match<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> when he forced remnants from a broken wooden chair into Blanchard&#8217;s gapping head wound. Obviously, Blanchard screamed yes when asked if he wanted to quit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Terry Funk Becomes Synonymous With &#8220;I Quit&#8221; Match<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Terry Funk<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8211; who first wrestled an &#8220;I Quit&#8221; match in 1975 &#8211; would take part in the next two &#8220;I Quit&#8221; matches. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In 1989 <a href=\"https:\/\/network.wwe.com\/video\/66481\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Funk and <strong>Ric Flair<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 clashed at <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Clash of Champions<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for the World Heavyweight Championship. This match is worth watching just to see the\u00a0<em>Coors<\/em> <em>Light <\/em>ring post advertising. Booze ads aside, the match is hard-hitting and very fun. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2023\/08\/23\/terry-funk-passes-away\/\" target=\"_self\">Funk<\/a> at one point is knocked so silly he swings for punters in the front row and knocks out a cameraman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This match is also the first to feature a wireless microphone.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ECW added the stipulation to Funk&#8217;s Texas Death match against Eddie Gilbert in 1993. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Funk would lose his final two &#8220;I Quit&#8221; matches in <a href=\"https:\/\/network.wwe.com\/video\/21955\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WCW<\/a> against <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dustin Rhodes <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">David Flair<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in 2000. He competed in two of the five &#8220;I Quit&#8221; matches in WCW history. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Funk is the only person to compete in &#8220;I Quit&#8221; matches for three <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">different<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> companies &#8211; the NWA, ECW, and WCW.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ric Flair x Terry Funk. I Quit Match. Watching this Clash I immediately felt like it was the best match I had ever seen. 34 years later, it\u2019s absolutely still in the conversation. Few feuds have ever reached this level of emotion\/intensity. By the time WrestleMania XI came around in April 95, neither man was champion but their rivalry hadn&#8217;t lost any steam. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">So much so that the first-ever WWE &#8220;I Quit&#8221; match was booked. Hart defeated Backlund in under 10 minutes when the special guest referee <strong>Roddy Piper<\/strong> determined that Backlund&#8217;s unaudable growns counted as the words &#8216;I quit&#8217;. It was Backlund&#8217;s penultimate match in the WWE. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Things got more controversial in the second WWE I Quit match when <strong>Stone Cold Steve Austin<\/strong> defeated <strong>Ken Shamrock<\/strong> despite Shamrock not saying the essential words. Instead, Austin tapped Shamrock&#8217;s hand to the canvas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But nothing would beat the controversy surrounding the third &#8211; and arguably the greatest ever &#8211; WWE &#8220;I Quit&#8221; match.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I Will Not, Will Not Say I Quit <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At the Royal Rumble 1999, <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mankind<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was 26 days into his only WWE Championship run. He faced <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Rock<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in an &#8220;I Quit&#8221; match that has become infamous for its brutality and controversial ending.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The extreme nature of the match &#8211; which climaxed with The Rock hitting Mankind with multiple unprotected chair shots to the head &#8211; was heightened by being featured in the <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Beyond the Mat <\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">documentary. Mankind&#8217;s children were carried out of the arena in tears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Rock won when Mankind was heard saying &#8216;I Quit&#8217;. But it was later revealed that Mankind had never said the words. Instead The Rock had arranged a recording of Mankind saying &#8216;I quit&#8217; in a promo to be broadcast in the arena. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As heel tactics go, nothing has rivaled The Rock winning the WWE Championship in this way. Between 2005 and 2011, Cena beat <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">John Bradshaw Layfield, Batista, Randy Orton <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span> <strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Miz <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in WWE Championship I Quit matches. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The JBL vs. Cena match is insanely bloody and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">certainly<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> adheres to the extreme nature synonymous with &#8220;I Quit&#8221; matches. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In 2015, he controversially beat <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rusev <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">when <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lana <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">said &#8216;I quit&#8217; on his behalf. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Meanwhile, AJ Styles won three I Quit matches in TNA between 2009 and 2011. He forced <strong>Booker T, Tommy Dreamer <\/strong><\/span>and<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong> Christopher Daniels<\/strong> to verbally admit defeat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ray battles Storm in an \u201cI Quit\u201d Match and more: NXT UK highlights, Feb. 27, 2020\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PxeH13Ip-W4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Women Say &#8220;I Quit&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">WWE also gave us the first-ever women&#8217;s &#8220;I Quit&#8221; match during this era. <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Beth Pheonix<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Melina<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> were the revolutionary women <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">involved<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> at <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One Night Stand<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Before <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Toni Storm<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was Timeless and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">before<\/span> <strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kay Lee Ray<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Alba Fire <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the two met in an NXT UK Women&#8217;s Championship &#8220;I Quit&#8221; match. Storm was forced to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">quit<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> after KLR threatened a second stomp on a chair around her neck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sexy Star<\/strong> and <strong>Mariposa<\/strong> participated in a &#8220;No mas&#8221; match in Lucha Underground.<\/p>\n<p>The match for an Ancient Aztec Medallion is the most extreme women&#8217;s <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I Quit&#8221;<\/span> in history. The women battled throughout the Temple including on scaffolding and beat each other with trash cans and chairs. It&#8217;s also the only women&#8217;s <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I Quit&#8221; <\/span>match to feature a lot of blood.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, <strong>Charlotte Flair<\/strong> and <strong>Ronda Rousey<\/strong> had an <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I Quit&#8221;<\/span> match at <em>WrestleMania Backlash<\/em>. They warmed up for this with an <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I Quit&#8221;<\/span> beat the clock challenge. Rousey forced <strong>Shotzi<\/strong> to quit in 01:41. Flair failed to beat this time in her <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I Quit&#8221;<\/span> match with <strong>Aliyah<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FULL MATCH: Charlotte Flair vs. Ronda Rousey \u2014 &quot;I Quit&quot; Match: WrestleMania Backlash 2022\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jqOfGlCltIc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Modern &#8220;I Quit&#8221; Classics<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">2020 is a difficult time to look back on wrestling due to the lack of crowds. But the year of the global pandemic also gave us two fantastic &#8220;I Quit&#8221; matches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Roman Reigns <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jey Uso <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">provided the most emotionally charged &#8220;I Quit&#8221; match. This was the only &#8220;I Quit&#8221; match ever to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">take place<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> inside Hell in a Cell and marked the beginning of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/02\/27\/the-rock-in-the-bloodline-will-be-the-high-chief-not-hollywood\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>The Bloodline<\/strong>.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reigns demanded if he beat Jey in the match that he and Jimmy Uso acknowledge him as the <strong>&#8220;Tribal Chief&#8221;.<\/strong> Jimmy interfered in the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">match<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> but when Reigns locked him in a guillotine, Jey quit the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">match<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to force Reigns to release the hold on his twin brother. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">AEW also <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">gave us perhaps the most extreme<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> &#8220;I Quit&#8221; match between <strong>John Moxley <\/strong>and <strong>Eddie Kingston<\/strong> in 2020.
