I also want to discuss how neurodivergent folks, both WWE and AEW wrestlers, fans and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">non-fans<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0experience the world differently. Pulling the curtain back so you can get a behind-the-scenes glimpse was what it\u2019s like behind the performance many neurodivergent people display to the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Elevating Awareness<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1567_jMeg2o?si=mv6NfeRzvnzWtqA6\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0AEW\u2019s Hey! (EW)<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Youtube<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">show,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> AEW megastar <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Will Ospreay<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0talked publicly about a part of himself many would not have noticed when he is in the ring or as a character onscreen. Besides being one of the best wrestlers in the world, Will has two confirmed life-long learning difficulties: ADHD and dyslexia. Ospreay may also be autistic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, he has yet to be formally diagnosed. Many fans on\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">X<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0were surprised and supportive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The positive response and praise Will received for talking openly and honestly about what our culture, at times, still perceives as weaknesses\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is deserved<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Despite\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0it is estimated up to 15-20% of the world\u2019s population is neurodivergent, there are still\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">large<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0misconceptions, misunderstandings, and prejudices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Neurodivergence is an umbrella term that includes a range of conditions such as ADHD, dyslexia, autism, dyspraxia, Tourette\u2019s, and others. Being neurodivergent at its simplest means our brains\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are wired<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0differently. There are oversimplifications. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Culturally, there is still a lingering perception that being neurodivergent means you may not be as \u201cgood\u201d as neurotypicals (everyone else, \u201cnormal\u201d). Yet in wrestling, neurodivergent wrestlers and personalities have shaped and will continue to shape all aspects of the business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There\u2019s also ignorance in the other direction with the assertion that being neurodivergent is a superpower. That\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">again<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is oversimplification. In wrestling, it\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">likely<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0some of the benefits of neurodivergence have aided wrestlers and personalities in their success. Yet\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">depending<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0on the condition (or combination of conditions), even a neurodivergent wrestler may struggle with what\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are perceived<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0as \u201csimple\u201d daily tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is a complex and very personal topic for me. Not all aspects of neurodivergence can or will be covered. However, like my previous contribution to<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/02\/25\/black-wrestling-history-african-origins-and-historic-firsts\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Black History Month,<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0I wanted to provide, even if brief, an insight into the experiences of another group who have been overlooked historically for their contributions to wrestling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You Can\u2019t See Us<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If you saw me at a wrestling event, I would look no different to any other fan. Look closely\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0you might notice how I tilt the left side of my head like a radar dish towards the person speaking. Or I switch places to the speaker\u2019s right side. Talk to me\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0I might be staring hard at your lips in a noisy space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I might look weird, but I am overcompensating. I\u2019m partially deaf in my right ear. No, I was born that way. A hearing aid won\u2019t fix it, although it benefits others.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is a physical disability and not a learning one, but undoubtedly\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0impacts my learning difficulties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Talking, I might say the wrong wrestler\u2019s name. Call\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Finn Balor<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Finn Banana without blinking an eye. At worst you might think I was stupid or experiencing word salad. It\u2019s dyslexia. Yes, it also impacts reading, but not exclusively. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s the most notable symptom because it\u2019s often the most talked about. Learning to read is vital and elementary.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">So having\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">difficulties with reading has been made<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0a source of embarrassment and an obvious tell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ospreay discussed he had to have someone else read out his AEW contract.\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">WWE<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Otis<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">another dyslexic<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, has spoken\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">publically<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0about the company helping him\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0learn to read.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0He publicly shared his achievement of reading his first book (<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pet Cemetery<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8211; a great choice!) on\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Instagram<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Like\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">John Cena<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, who reportedly may be OCD, you can\u2019t see us. Learning difficulties are often invisible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sidebar on Autism<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Autism, differently from other learning difficulties, has a history of discrimination and negative connotations. When Will Ospreay said he might be autistic, I know some folks will say \u2018But he doesn\u2019t look autistic\u2019. As a teacher, I\u2019ve heard kids, other staff, and parents say this about autistic students. Likewise, the sentiment \u201cbut he\/she doesn\u2019t act autistic\u201d is also deeply problematic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There isn\u2019t a set look or\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">set of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0rules for how autistic people might act or present themselves.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0TV shows and films have created archetypes of autistic people, from\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rain Man<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to Sheldon in<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0The<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Big Bang Theory<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Or in wrestling WWE\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Eugene<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. These depictions\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are built<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0on stereotypes that pigeonhole autistic people. Autistic people are a diverse group with a range of strengths, weaknesses, and needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As a teacher, I\u2019ve taught dozens of autistic students. Some may have one or more of the stereotypical autistic traits.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Not<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0making eye contact<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Taking<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">what\u2019s been<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0said literally. Some have difficulties with communicating their feelings or emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Others defy stereotyping. I have autistic students who are more\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">sociable<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0than I will ever be. Who communicate freely and have emotional intelligence that surpasses their young age. Some have wicked senses of humour. Students like Will Ospreay, are extroverts, boisterous and enjoy physicality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">No Cookie Cutter Mould\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2mR6zvOx4RA?si=I2BRJ7HUt563T4rm\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wrestlers come in various shapes and sizes with varying styles. So do learning difficulties. Again, you can\u2019t always tell someone&#8217;s appearance that their brain\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is wired<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0differently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The following wrestling personalities are distinct individuals. However, they share one thing in common besides having worked for WWE and being wrestling personalities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Batista<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mark Henry<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Diamond Dallas Page<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">CJ Perry<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\/<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lana<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Vince McMahon<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They are all dyslexic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Here\u2019s another string of former and current AEW wrestlers: <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">MJF, Joey Janela, Nick Comoroto<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Matt Morgan<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They all live with ADHD.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is a condition that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0means individuals have difficulties\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0paying attention, sensory stimulation, and physical and mental restlessness.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Like other sports and performance arts, wrestling is physical and frenetic. For some, it can help them channel that energy. It allows them to use their ADHD as a strength.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Learning difficulties don\u2019t come in cookie-cutter moulds. There is some crossover between learning difficulties\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">such<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0as\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">difficulties with<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0memory, organisation, and communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, difficulties can vary from person to person. Even within conditions, there are a wide variety of profiles. We are a diverse roster. If we were wrestlers in a WWE 2K game, our stats\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">if<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0presented on a dartboard\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">graph<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0would be asymmetrical stars. Full of tall peaks, our strengths, and huge dips, our weaknesses. The latter would usually\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be hidden<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Because<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0like in wrestling, neurotypicals can use a mask to hide their difficulties.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Overcompensating \u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The wrestling clich\u00e9 to develop a strong character is that you turn your volume\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">up<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to eleven. I\u2019d argue some neurotypical, not just wrestlers, naturally. Some neurotypicals learn to overcompensate and hide their weaknesses. It\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Paul Heyman\u2019s ECW\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">philosophy. You exaggerate the positives and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hide the negatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Think of those neurodivergent wrestlers who have mastered various strengths to convince us they\u2019re superstars or gods. Whether through talk, their acting, their athleticism, or their creativity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">DDP on \u201c<\/span><strong><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/liliangarcia.com\/chasing-glory-podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chasing Glory with Lilian Garcia<\/span><\/a><\/strong><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/liliangarcia.com\/chasing-glory-podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0explained how he got through high school when he couldn\u2019t read:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThey wanted me to read something on the board<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, I<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0couldn\u2019t read it, so I\u2019d get myself in trouble and\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">get<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0sent to the principal\u2019s office.\u00a0What got me through school was being,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">just<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, I think\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">being<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">nice<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to everybody. Anytime there was any\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">kind of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0talking in any\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">kind of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0segment in school, I was all about it. And that\u2019s what I\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">learned,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0through repetition. I barely graduated with enough credits, so to speak, for high school. I didn\u2019t start to learn to read until I was 30.\u201d<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Quote taken from \u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportskeeda.com\/wwe\/5-wwe-superstars-battled-dyslexia\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sportskeeda.com<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A term that relates sounds somewhat lucha inspired: \u201cmasking\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Literally<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to mask the issues to hide and pretend to be like everyone else. Some dyslexics and ADHD individuals and wrestlers are phenomenal talkers because it distracts from their weaknesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Think about AEW wrestler MJF\u2019s incredible articulation and promos. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Consider how\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0one\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">promo<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0MJF revealed feeling inadequate because a teacher at school picked on him due to his inability to focus.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0It\u2019s relatable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sports and arts\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">for<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">some<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0can become an outlet because our weaknesses\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are not used<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Our strengths can become a multi-purpose tool. Unfortunately, they are not applicable or\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">useful<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0for every situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Work Harder\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Issues in school are common problems for many neurotypicals. Those who have a diagnosis\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">might<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0like MJF\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">feel<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0picked on and pigeon-holed. Others like myself thrived to a point but went undiagnosed until later in life. As was the case for Mark Henry and CJ Perry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Perry, like me, only found out she\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was dyslexic<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0at university. How can you\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">make it through<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0years of exams and education without knowing this?\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Overcompensating and working incredibly hard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt took a lot of self-discipline for me, as a little girl, to find that resilience to keep reading slowly, even if it was just The Cat in the Hat\u2014to keep\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">on<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0trying and not give up. Others have not had national or global exposure and are trailblazers of\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">wider<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0neurodivergent experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Overcoming Physical Limitations<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There are some whose neurodivergence impacts their motor skills and coordination.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Even aspects of their body, like muscle strength and definition.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0These are features of dyspraxia and some forms of autism. I learned about dyspraxia from my partner\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">who<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is dyspraxic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Also known as Clumsy Child Syndrome, its effects can vary. My partner\u2019s parents\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were told<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0her dyspraxia was severe. That she might have to use a wheelchair when she grew up<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. She<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0she can walk.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0she struggles with stamina, balance, and weak ankles. The latter have sometimes randomly given out mid-walk. She\u2019ll tumble like a wrestling referee bumping. Despite her limitations, she persists and does the best she can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Some wrestlers have overcome a visible physical disability. Like\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Zack Gowen<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Gregory Irons.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In my ignorance, I wondered if there had been at least one dyspraxic wrestler. There has been at least one. And like me and Ospreay, he\u2019s an Englishman.\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pop Sensation Jayson Mason\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is an indie wrestler from the Northeast of England.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><\/strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As a child, I struggled to keep my balance and split my head open three times, so you\u2019d expect that performing complex wrestling moves would be completely out of reach\u2026 I struggled to perform many of the most basic moves when I first started and was told on many occasions that I should give up<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u2026\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">[Wrestling] didn\u2019t cause my dyspraxia to go away; I couldn\u2019t just flick a switch and\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">say<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0\u201cI have perfect co-ordination now\u201d. Some moves which took others minutes to learn took me weeks<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jayson Mason. Regardless,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the fact<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Mason\u2019s been able to live his dream and pursue his passion is tremendous.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Autistic Trailblazers<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Brian Zane<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is a trained pro wrestler, commentator, manager, interviewer, ring announcer and wrestling authority figure. \u201cThe Influencer\u201d also has his own\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">YouTube\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">channel dedicated to discussing the funniest aspects of wrestling. Culturally, there are some traits of autism in girls that have\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been overlooked<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0due to gender stereotyping of girl\u2019s behaviour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Charlie Pierce,<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0who has also wrestled as\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Charlie<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kruel\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Hardcore Charles<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, is 26 from Indiana and is a 6-year veteran. Pierce has ADHD and Autism. She has wrestled for\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">OVW<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and on\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">AEW Dark\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Elevation<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> where she wrestled another Indiana native, AEW star <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ruby Soho<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Being Autistic made learning to wrestle challenging for Pierce. In an interview with\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wrestling with Entertainment<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Pierce explained how it took her a month to learn how to bump. She still and will likely continue to struggle calling and remembering spots in the ring. Yet her Autism has given her the creativity to create her personas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s part of me. It\u2019s what makes me me<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u201d Charlie Pierce,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Rvx-M8zVHvU&amp;t=2556s\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wrestling with Entertainment<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Suffering from social anxiety, being backstage can be difficult, but Pierce keeps herself to herself<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Not<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0out of rudeness. It\u2019s to mentally prepare and minimize her social anxiety, which can be another aspect of some Autistic individual&#8217;s experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Like Jordan, Pierce has supported autistic youths in the past and would love to be a motivational speaker. She\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">strongly<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0believes that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Autism doesn\u2019t stop you from doing anything you want to do<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u201d Charlie Pierce,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Rvx-M8zVHvU&amp;t=2556s\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wrestling with Entertainment<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Warning: Toxic Positivity<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This article\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is a celebration of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the achievements and recognition of how neurodivergent people have impacted wrestling. Although I have included comments on the difficulties of neurodivergence, including my own experiences, there is a danger that\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">inadvertently<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0you may interpret a simplistic and incorrect narrative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Neurodivergence isn\u2019t just overcome with enough hard work alone.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You also need<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the right support, the understanding of others and opportunities that allow you to achieve your potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The slogan that you can do anything if you put your mind to it should include an asterisk. For\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a variety of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0complex reasons that experts, including other neurodivergent folks, can explain better than myself, it\u2019s not that simple. For some of us, there are limitations. As a dyspraxic, Jayson Mason will never be a high-flying wrestler.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Some\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">limitations<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0cannot be removed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0with hard work alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It doesn\u2019t mean folks can\u2019t or won\u2019t find success. Sometimes\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">positivity<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0causes more harm than help. Sometimes\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">positivity<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">itself<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0can be discriminating because it ignores the issues, concerns, or feelings of neurodivergent. Telling someone\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that positivity<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0can help them change and adapt to difficulty rather can be easier than making changes\/adaptions to accommodate their needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fans&#8217; Responsibility\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wrestling fans get accused of being fickle and treating wrestlers not like people. Each week\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">there<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0are reports of fan abuse online or in buildings against wrestlers like\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Maxine Dupree<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Liv Morgan<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Folks with neurodivergent experience confrontations like this online and in real life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As a dyslexic and partially deaf English teacher, I have, and will continue to\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be asked<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the same question: How? The\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">real<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0feelings behind this question vary. Sometimes it&#8217;s with admiration. Sometimes\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0ignorance and a genuine desire to learn. At its worst, it\u2019s loaded. The expectation is I justify how I can do my job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At times\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I\u2019ve<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0even been confronted by parents and students who have outright said my dyslexia means I can\u2019t do my job.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Not<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0shouldn\u2019t, as if it is wrong of me to be working with students when I have issues with spelling. It can\u2019t. I should not be allowed to do my job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Learning I was dyslexic later in life spared me from the explicit prejudice many of my students have heard from peers and even their own families. They have\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been told<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0what their limitations are. However, I still have moments of feeling inadequate. When as a writer, despite proofreading an article 4 or 5 times, a spelling mistake will slip through.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0makes me feel like a failure. An imposter. Less than.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0happens because our cultural prejudices have made me feel abnormal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ableism (discrimination of disabilities) and mentalism (discrimination due to someone\u2019s neurological differences) are\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">unfortunately<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0things many neurodivergent folk experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When fans online use language that relates to disabilities as insults, it can hurt more than the person who is being insulted. It also harms those\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">who<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0like\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">me<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0will read those comments. It&#8217;s mentally scarring being called these words to imply we are less than others.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It&#8217;s One Part of Us\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Neurodivergence is only one aspect of ourselves. Dyslexia is part of me. It\u2019s helped me work harder.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To have resilience.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0To see the world differently in a way that allows my creativity to be different from other people. It helps more than hinders my writing due to practice. It\u2019s one aspect of me, not the whole person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As trainee wrestler\/referee\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lili Edea<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0wrote on X on 18th October 2022 to MJF:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cNot a Q\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">but<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0thanks for incorporating your ADHD in a way that it&#8217;s a part of who you are, but not something you want sympathy for\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I&#8217;m<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0an autistic wrestler who&#8217;s been training<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a02\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">years,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0it&#8217;s part of who I am, but I also don&#8217;t want to be typecast for it either.\u201d Quote taken from X.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Former AEW World Champion MJF\u2019s response:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cMental disabilities don\u2019t define us. Neurodivergent folks have helped forge the industry. Others are blazing trails for those who have not\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been openly represented<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0before.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Will<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Ospreay may be the first world champion to be autistic, but other wrestlers like\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Treavor<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Jordan, Luke DiSangro and Charlie Pierce may follow suit. Over time\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">we<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0will see more autistic and neurodivergent representation in wrestling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Some successes may not lead to superstardom like Jason Mayson. Regardless,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">their example should be recognised<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. In Florida,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ricky Mundro<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is a 45-year-old wrestling promoter. Mundro owns\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Legacy Classic Championship Wrestling<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and has trained to become a pro wrestler. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">His persona,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ricky Autistic<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, he has adopted because he wants to inspire other autistic individuals to pursue their dreams. Mundro is also a trained member of the fire department. He has training in paramedics, firefighters, search and rescue, traffic and radio control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Beyond the ring, WWE-obsessed fan\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sam Ellenport<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0took a chance and grabbed the brass ring. Obsessed with wrestling plush dolls, Sam contacted\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Uncanny Brands<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, who make<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0\u201cBleacher Creatures\u201d<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0plush dolls with a suggestion.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That suggestion was taken<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0on board. It also leads to Sam\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">being hired<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0as a content creator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The company\u2019s president,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Matthew\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hoffman<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0saw that Sam\u2019s unique perspective and special interest could help the company grow. When writing in\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/04\/22\/elevating-the-risks-and-rewards-of-aew-pushing-will-ospreay-to-the-sky\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">another article on Will Ospreay<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, I suggested that, if Ospreay is comfortable with it, presenting his neurodivergence could help inspire others.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Others sharing their experiences, whether\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0WWE\u2019s Otis or independent wrestlers like Treavon Jordan or Charlie Pierce, will only help\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0normalise discussing and supporting neurodivergent people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Beyond the ring, AEW\u2019s work with\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">KultureCity\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">has helped make their events inclusive\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0break rooms and other support available for those with sensory difficulties. WWE\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">through<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0charity and outreach\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">work<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0have supported those with neurodivergent and physical disabilities. However, WWE could learn from AEW how to\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">also<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0make all their events inclusive (as well as other\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/03\/30\/wwe-learn-aew-bidding-war-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">things related to attracting wrestlers<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As mentioned, as fans, we have a responsibility to\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">not just the wrestlers but<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0each other to think and act carefully.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0One of the by-products of tribalism is the intense hatred and othering of those who like something different. Underneath our preferences, whether neurodivergent or neurotypical, we are all fans.
